I Can't Get 'Em Up
By Ryan Porter
IN-N-OUT Editor
I don’t know what it’s like in your neighborhood, but the snow is dumping once again here in the Northwest. All in all it doesn’t bother me a whole bunch, but there is one thing that isn’t too cool! I can’t get them up!
Yeah, both the smart and the Audi are stuck and down on the street since I can’t get them up the driveway! Meanwhile CarDomain is running out a series of houses in the Seattle area today. Also, I think Rob skied into the office this morning only to find nobody there!

I hate that feeling when you have to leave your vehicle at the bottom of a hill. We have almost two feet of snow on the ground right now and even with studded winter tires, my Tacoma just barely made it up my driveway. It’s about a quarter mile long, steep as hell, and a wicked turn just before you reach the top. Even with chains, it’s not a guaranteed success. On the bright side, I can use the winter to justify the need for dual locking diffs and a winch.

I understand about the once every four years… Why keep a set of winter wheels with tires mounted on them if it’s only gonna be used twice in the lifetime of the car… You could maybe find a set of wheel chains, at least you should be able to bring the cars in your driveway.
And I also want to say that Smarts are doing great in northern Québec winters where snow is part of our life, why should they be not meant by any mean to cross winter?

The smart is a smart and by no means is meant for the snow. The Audi on the other hand is a great snow vehicle but when you are running max performance summer tires on 19 inch rims, they aren’t exactly great for compact snow and ice. On the other hand, the traction control does an amazing job but there is no getting around the fact that performance summer tires aren’t meant for ice and snow. If it weren’t for the fact that we only get snow once every four years, I likely would own some snows but when you average that out over the four years the cost of ownership on those snows doesn’t really line up and 20 inch snow tires are expensive.

I lol’d
Seriously, I understand that you may not have real winter tires since I don’t know where seattle is (i’m not from the US) but your cars don’t at least wear 4-seasons tires?

I really expected a lot more viagra jokes, which by the way is no joke. However, salting and some snow cables would seem the wisest and cheapest choice. I am one of those jerks still running summer tires because we never get snow, till the other day and I was doing a 1080 a 40mph into oncoming traffic laughing my head off. Then the AWD caught traction and drove out of danger. I considered snow tires but then the snow went away and it is now 60 degrees.

You really should consider some tires with tread on them Ryan, it really didn’t look like to much snow on the ground there.
I do like Rob’s idea…..pick the Smart up and carry it!

How about buying winter tires. I just spent $1200 for Toyo Versado LX all season tires so that i could actually make it in the snow. Lost a little grip coming from nexen n3000′s. But i think the type of tires can make all the differnce in winter weather.

Dart Doctor–the Mopar has good tires and would probably do ok in the snow with some weight in the trunk, but no, it stays safe, warm and dry in this kind of weather.

I love the snow. I love the fact that AWD Grumpy just keeps going where ever I want it to go despite the snow. Grumpy rules.

4% grade… I wish. As for both these cars, they are nice but they are both disposable and could be replaced with one phone call, it’s not like I have a 993 Turbo sittin on the road.

I agree with Scott sounds like your just a raging pussy who travels in a smart car (nice audi though). However im amazed at how much of a fag you must be to not be able to make it up that 4% grade hill with the legendary quattro at your disposal..

Well you can’t really tell from the picture but I did shovel both the driveway and sidewalk but with all the snow coming down it already started to cover the driveway again.

A true car guy would be salting and scraping his driveway, instead of leaving his prized possessions out on the street to be struck by a driver with bald summer tires still on. I’m just saying…

Why don’t you just pick up the smart and carry it?
