Challenger R/T vs. Camaro SS: Which Would You Choose?

By Rob Einaudi

Editor-in-Chief

Heading into NAIAS I thought I’d put together an old school domestic match-up. Call it the bailout edition if you want, but these are Detroit’s heavy hitters for 2009. Both cars come in just north of $30k. The Camaro SS has a slight edge in horsepower (400 vs 375 hp) and weighs about 130 pounds less. But that’s just the starting point for most of you guys. So which would you choose? The Mopar or the Bowtie?

Challenger R/T Camaro SS

The SS spanks the R/T. Yeah, the Challenger looks great, but it’s too big and soft.

challenger all the way, the challenger looks like a mopar whereas the camaro looks crap

Zac
Jan 12, 2009 at 10:04 pm

Challenger all day long , retro look with more than enough power. The camaro is going to be the biggest flop gm will ever have. If it even comes out.. and all this speculation that dodge and gm are going under is bullshit. the government dumped 25 billion into the companies so they would stay afloat. the media just hypes it up to sound like the economy is so bad . fuckin bullshit. Mopar or No car ! challenger muscle looks a lot better than a “camaro” where is the retro look ? it looks like the new chevy cobalt with a camaro badge on it.

I’d prefer the Camaro. The challenger is undeniablly beautiful, but the big three are all trying to go retro. The new Camaro is going to be successful on its own without having to ride on the coattails of its former glory. And about the guy that complained about the t-tops, the first generation Camaros didn’t have them either. This Camaro is basically a restart of the entire Camaro line. Some day, maybe later in the generation, it’ll have them, or we’ll have to wait until the next generation.

neither i think a toyota will smoke both of these cars hands down how would u feel if you bought a 30k muscle car and a toyota beat you in a race you would hide in shame

Josh
Jan 9, 2009 at 11:00 am

Both! I wish everyone would quit bitchin like five year olds. I can’t afford either one. I would go for a true classic, but can’t afford those either. I would choose Camaro b/c how do you move forward from retro? I like nameplates that adapt overtime vs. picking up 35 years later.

The Camaro SS all the way, already ordered mine, fully loaded. Plus why by something like the Challenger when Dodge is going out of business in 2010.

Richard
Jan 9, 2009 at 7:32 am

the challenger without a dought. mopar vs chevy. crap i pulled three chevys out of the ditch yesterday with my dodge. Bring it. you cant piss on what u cant catch. GO DODGE

I own an 08 srt8 challenger and am not trying to be all that bias here. But, for one how can a car that hasnt even been made yet and might not be released if gm continues to flop be compared to a vehicle thats been out 2 model years? The top of the line camero ss is being compared with the midgrade r/t, how is that fair? the chevy looks nothing like the intended 1969, the interior is disgusting, and all that is said so far to be released is the 6 cylinder model so far. Challenger and mustang hit the nail on the head for old school looks, afraid i cant say that for the gm. Howabout a comparison with the srt8 challenger and the camero ss? that sounds fair to me. And how can you say weight is the disadvantage if you havent driven either one? and price? you get what you pay for, buck 4 buck that challenger wont b beat. I’m waiting to line up against that ss, if the car does ever happen to come out, so then to prove and show to all the chevy heads that gm has never made superior muscle. Mopar or no car, Challenger all the way!!!

Chris
Jan 9, 2009 at 5:11 am

DAMN this is a hard choice, both r the shit, think imma go for the challenger

Jerry
Jan 9, 2009 at 12:01 am

Both sharp cars, but Dodge takes this one. GM didn’t rebirth the Camaro, they designed a new car an slaped a Camaro badge on it. Chrysler did wonders with keeping 90% of the car classic. And if you want the most for your money, go straight for the Challenger SRT8. Puts out 425hp – 420ft lbs of torque to the rear wheels, and hits 0-60 in less than 5 sec. As the saying goes, “Mopar or Nocar”!

Blake87
Jan 8, 2009 at 11:28 pm

I just sat here and read this entire page, and I am absolutely astonished that all you guys who make yourselves sound like such camaro lovers didn’t mention ONE WORD about t-tops. Honestly, how can you be a true camaro lover and not like t-tops? It’s arguably the greatest feature ever created for the f-body. I’d like one person on here to tell me they wouldnt like to be ridin in a brand new 09 camaro ss with t-tops taken out and the wind runnin throught their hair while flyin down the freeway and actually mean it. Speaking of which, whoever brought up the great point about how they can’t wait until they bring the firebird and trans am back, i couldnt agree more, those were always and forever my favorite f-bodys, they just look fast in addition to backing it the hell up and fuckin movin like no other. But not to get too far off base, the camaro obviously wins hands down on paper with their obvious advantages of horsepower and handling. But when it comes to the challenger, what the fuck do you want already? It stayed true to its original, which i dont care what any of you clowns say, is the best attribute of ANY modern remade sportscar. But I will say this, NONE of these cars will EVER beat their original, but the challenger did a much better job staying true to their original than did the camaro, there are waaaaaay too many breaks in the body of the new camaro, the damn thing looks like its gonna turn into optimus prime right before our very eyes without warning. They tried too hard to copy what ford did with the mustang by taking the old body style and putting a new twist on it. Say what you want about the mustang not living up to the power these two beasts are putting out, but regardless, they did come up with this entire idea first so you gotta give em some credit for that at least. The challenger’s body style looks much better than that of the camaros because while making it look new, they somehow found a way to make it look EXACTLY like its original. Its about time Mopar got their shit together after they came out with that piece of shit piss poor excuse for a dodge charger dressed up chrysler 300 lookin pile of junk they released tainting the very name of one of the best sports cars ever made. Why someone would ever put four doors on a sports car and turn it into a luxury sedan is far beyond me. Mopar should’ve done with the charger what they did with the challenger and keep it true to its original. I would have to say to sum it all up, this is far too close for me to call, i cant decide because i love them both, there are things about each that i both like and dislike, but i LOVE how they made a sunroof an option on the challenger, thats badass. They should make the new camaro available with t-tops if they really wanna stay true to the originals (they definitely should). The camaro would sell a hell of a lot better if they did that. But i will leave you all with this, to any of you who say that one of these cars blows the other out of the water, you are FUCKING RETARDED. Not only that but you are lying to yourself and to everyone else who looks at this page. Give both Mopar and GM their rightful props they deserve on a job very well done on both of these rockets. These are the last of the true American sports cars, lets just sit back and enjoy them while we’re still lucky enough to do so rather than sit and bitch about petty little things, just shut the hell up and appreciate em already.

I like chevy and the camaro but the new challenger looks soo good in black that i have to go with it.

Dwaine
Jan 8, 2009 at 9:13 pm

I grew up in the 60′s so I relate more to the Challenger’s rounder edges. The Camaro is too sharp edged for my taste.

Tim
Jan 8, 2009 at 8:54 pm

I’m gonna have to stick with my Mopar so Chally all the way. Now lets see if GM actually releases the Camaro this time around…..

Mike
Jan 8, 2009 at 8:41 pm

Challenger!

Looks closest to the real thing while having a little modern look to it!

___
Jan 8, 2009 at 8:12 pm

camaros fugly but faster. challenger actually looks like the car it represents, least on the outside. but chryslers interior designer had a previous gig with fisher price.

Gabriel
Jan 8, 2009 at 7:51 pm

damn choice they both look mean and tuff I’d go for the Camaro

Jake
Jan 8, 2009 at 7:36 pm

Camaro…duh

Kevin
Jan 8, 2009 at 7:28 pm

I’d definitely take the camaro in this one. The R/T challenger takes about 6 seconds to get to sixty because of the gearing, which is slower than a mustang GT. The camaro I would peg in the high 4 second range.

Rob
Jan 8, 2009 at 6:25 pm

I like the Challenger’s styling more, but the Camaro sounds like its gonna be the king in performance. Close call, but I gotta go with the RWD muscle car on this one

tut
Jan 8, 2009 at 6:24 pm

high yall doin ive been waiting for the camaro ever since the transformers movie, but checked it out before that. i have a dodge ram(yep, got the hemi):) but i still like the bowtie tho. the challenger is nice and they really didnt take much from it. and the camaro looks totally changed all the way. but what the hell, sometimes a change is good. im kinda glad they changed it up a bit. me myself id go for the camaro, hand down. as a matter of fact, i plan on getting one when they come out in march. yall take of yourselves and be eazy. keep it 100.

Jan 8, 2009 at 5:35 pm

Mopar, The Camaro looks to Star Trek for me, atleast Daimler didn’t mess with a good thing.

If my male prostitute gig ever pans out I’ll have both in my garage +1

jamie
Jan 8, 2009 at 4:36 pm

the challenger looks more curvey. and the camero is not as curvey but I still love them both. but would take the challenger in a second

Rob
Jan 8, 2009 at 4:03 pm

I went to Sema and saw both cars. Pictures do the Camaro no justice, it really is a spectacular car, especially the one they had with the LS7 motor in it. Comparing the R/T to the SS, when it comes to performance stock, they are both so close it shouldn’t matter which is faster cuz if you care about how fast it is, that’s when you should start modding it. And the weight, 130lbs really doesn’t make much of a difference unless you feel a victory is meant by that fraction of a second. Personally, the Camaro is beefier, it just LOOKS like it has more power, which is the only real difference between either car.

goose
Jan 8, 2009 at 3:57 pm

challenger!

theprotegekid
Jan 8, 2009 at 3:20 pm

oh yeah and both of these cars will blow any mustang out of the water, ford needs to get with the program.

theprotegekid
Jan 8, 2009 at 3:19 pm

love them both, its a shame that the companies had to push back the release dates on the droptops. i dont even think i could really pick one of the two its such a close call, obviously out of the box the camaro performs better but it wouldnt take much to make the challenger faster, some exhaust and cold air and it would be well over 400 horses. and for all of you that say the challeger is too heavy, 130 pounds can easily be removed if your really that worried about it.

john
Jan 8, 2009 at 3:18 pm

both cars are great! as americans we need to come together and support the homeland. forget little jap imports and euros. they all have theyre own sytling and specs. but americans are good at two things when it comes to the automobile Trucks and Muscle Cars. and last time i checked didnt americans produce the first auto (Ford Model T). AMERICA FUCK YA!

CHAllenger i really like it no offense to the camaro guys i just dont like the new styling i still am a fan of all muscle cars but on this oine it is the challenger

Dmac
Jan 8, 2009 at 10:35 am

how could you not go with the bowtie? love it so much i cant wait for the converitle to come out. but not bashing mopar the challenger looks real good if i was forced to get a dodge i’d actually be proud to drive that around, but i feel like they should have made it smaller kinda like the original. i mean same go’s for the camaro too but you cant always win right, good job to both companys i think the mustang needed better comp.

Gordon
Jan 8, 2009 at 10:34 am

I would choose the SS over a SRT-8.

TJ
Jan 8, 2009 at 10:13 am

Camaro all the way. The Challenger still looks good, but I like the Camaro better, in adition to having more power, weighs less, and I’ve heard its handling isn’t too bad, where the Challenger doesn’t handle very well. And I do think the Challenger does look a little too big.

Brandon
Jan 8, 2009 at 9:51 am

Challenger, just because I’d wanna convert it to a cuda. ;)

Jan 8, 2009 at 2:55 am

okay, ive been waiting for both of these cars, for sometime now. my mom has a challenger srt-8. it is a disappointment. the steering is numb, the interior looks exactly like a 300 or a charger or a magnum, and just like the rest of the shitty srt-8 range, for 425 horsepower and 425 lbs/ft of torque its not that fast. the camaro would blow that shit out of the water, im goin with the camaro ss ftw.

brian
Jan 8, 2009 at 2:50 am

CAMARO. MOPAR, wont go far

Ha ha ha ha ha ha. The challenger – what a joke. I saw both of them, sat in both of them and have heard both of them running I laugh at the poor suckers who bought a crappy challenger. The camaro is 10 times better and gets my vote.

Have not seen the Camaro in person yet but the pics look fairly decent. Saw the Challenger SRT8 last weekend at the dealers and it absolutly blew my mind. Its bigger than it appears in the pictures and is comfortable as hell (very roomy), sounds good too. Met I guy that same day who owns one and he swears by that machine. Old bastard almost made off with my lady in the passenger seat. I really like the SRT8 model Challenger. Hell I’ll take the RT.

Jarrod
Jan 7, 2009 at 4:56 pm

I’ll take the 390 horse 2009 Challenger R/T with a six-speed, please!

A lot of people shout out and say Camaro off the bat, but not a lot of people seem to have seen the Challenger in person yet. I saw a black R/T with the R/T stripes (optional), and it looks incredibly badass.

And as far as I’m concerned, if you’re going to buy a Challenger R/T or a Camaro SS, fuel prices must not really mean too much to you if you can afford to buy either car.

derkc
Jan 7, 2009 at 4:55 pm

first off teh new challengers come with 425 hp, just like the old hemi’s, and as of the camaro i would put my 6 banger dodge shadow up against it.

Mon
Jan 7, 2009 at 4:51 pm

C-A-M-A-R-O definitely. Very nice! It’s a perfect rendition of what a retro ride should be. When will GM come up with a retro Corvette???

BarbiesStang
Jan 7, 2009 at 4:45 pm

Ouch, this is a tough one. But not only will the Camaro SS surely outrun the Challenger, but it will get 10Xs the gas mileage lmao. So I have to go with pretty much everyone else here and pick the Camaro. I’d still rather have a Mustang over both tho… lol

Camaro SS.

bob balderston
Jan 7, 2009 at 3:19 pm

the chevy, like the mustang, both seem to follow a design pattern that has hints or styling hallmarks of their cars, where the challenger is a better rendering of a remake of an old classic; who would have thought, 30years later, all the safety and drive creature comforts and reasonable fule mileage and much much much better all around performance to boot; no matter your choice of poison, there isn’t really a bad one of the bunch

joe
Jan 7, 2009 at 3:09 pm

For answering the pole..Id say Challenger all the way, but this is kind of an unfair pole. I mean, the challenger has been out for a year already which has given people time to pick out little things that they like and dislike about the car. Compared to the Camaro, which I’m sure nobody hear has had the pleasure to drive.

retroman
Jan 7, 2009 at 3:05 pm

Challenger. I think it has more in common with the original than the Camaro does with it’s ’67 counterpart.

Sara
Jan 7, 2009 at 3:05 pm

But I’ll take a red Camaro with black stripes, and maybe torque thrusts on it.

Camaro is the vote.

Justin
Jan 7, 2009 at 2:44 pm

Challenger, no doubt and not just cuz I only drive Mopar but because it is actual a likeness of what once was. GM tried but they have nothing on Ford and Chrysler when it comes to bringing back old school!

Camaro, the challenger is just too big and bloated.

Camaro. Tough call but, I have to stick with the OL’ GM brand, someday they’ll get it right.

This is a really tough one. But, if I could get a Camaro just like BumbleBee, yellow with the black rally stripes, I’d definitely have to go with the Camaro on this one.

Challenger. Old school Dodge Fanboy, and they look fairly similar to me, and I enjoy Chrysler products lately.

Already bought my black on Black Challenger R/T

My challenger LOOKS like a challenger, the Camaro is a little to Sci-fi for my tastes. Looks like it went through the Stargate one to many times…
