Bad Deal or Good Deal?
By Ron Honig
WaytooFurious
I was talking with some friends the other day and we were discussing the best and worst car deals that we have had over the years. My choices were easy. The worst deal that I have had is my 70 Dodge Charger. Despite having an independent inspection done, the car was not what I expected when it arrived. To put it simply it had more holes than a piece of Swiss cheese! I should have flown half way around the country and inspected it myself. It would have avoided a lot of headaches. My lawyers did eventually get some compensation from the company that did the inspection but it was not worth the grief.
The best deal that I have ever had on buying a car is my 69 Plymouth Fury. I have always liked the shape of these but was never able to find one that wasn’t a rust bucket. I finally got lucky on eBay. I didn’t bid on the auction but noticed it didn’t the reserve. I made the owner what I thought was a ridiculous offer, just over $3,000, and was really surprised when he accepted. I wound up with a great car with a genuine 43,000 miles on the clock.
So what has been your best or worst deal?

Best: 85 Mercury Cougar XR7 Turbo with 86K and a 86 Cougar LS 5.0 for $150 complete barn finds with little rust on the XR7.
Worst: $5000 for a 1998 Cadillac Catera, what a hunk of garbage! Valve cover gaskets leak, intake gasket leaks, drives like shit and looks like it too.

that is the way it happens. what goes around comes around. One can’t lose all the time. My greatest was a chevelle with a backseat cigarette fire. less than 100k: 400 bucks, and I drove it and registered immediately. Then got 1 100 dollar v8, then did 10.4 seconds, never owned a garage, swapped use of one for the old six cyl that was in it, taking care of a my garbage pile. Where there is a will, there is a way. Greed is not one of those ways.My greatest realist deal was of course old subarus. Keep the sterotypes written , it feeds my life.

Best Deal: 1966 Ford Mustang 289 all original c-code convertible with power top and original am radio. perfect interior, but the rest was not so lucky with the years although the engine does run. Paid $2250 in Sept 2008. Currently in restoration. I’ve had it appraised to be worth $35grand after being totally restored. Most orig 289 Mustang verts in the condition mine is in sell for 3-4 grand.
Next best: 1992 Dodge Spirit R/T, 1 of 92 red R/Ts made that year. Mint Condition all around with 107k on the od. Paid $2000
Worst deal: ’89 Ford Festiva. Complete piece of crap. Nothing worked right, not even the windows and seats. Paid $1000 when gas was up to $5 a gallon

The best deal I got was a brand new 350 crate motor from summit for a steal at under $1,700 bucks. The local places around here wanted more then that to rebuild the old motor.
The worst deal was buying my first R/C Nitro car which is sitting in the garage with a seized motor only after a few runs running the pink nitro fuel. Call up the hobby store I purchased it from to find out now the number has been disconnected. I have to find another hobby store and see if I can either get a differant motor or maybe get an oringal one from the maker of the R/C Car. I should have bought a Hpi or a Traxxas.

Best deal, my 2007 Charger Daytona R/T.
Worst deal, my 1987 Daytona Shelby Z, and still trying to make it right.
Stories about the experiences are on their pages.

My Skyline GT-R. I purchased it direct from auction (as a certified dealer) for 3500 CDN dollars. It was the deal of the day in Okinawa, and I just happened to catch it. After all shipping fee’s etc etc It came to about 6500 for a mint R32 GT-R.
