The move to four lights was interesting on a couple of levels, the first of which was the fact that four headlights were illegal in most states, hence the mention in the release that the lights can be used according to state law. The reasons for this are unknown to us at this time; despite our research we can’t really find a definitive answer as to why quad headlights were considered dangerous. The T-Bird and the MarkII signaled FoMoCo’s new direction in design. The four headlights were being pushed by the Federal government.Safety advocates had been pushing for them. The high beams were for unlit streets and country roads.A previous Federal law had required that all cars have at least two headlights, one on each side.A third light could be mounted just outside the driver’s window.Like searchlights on copcars. Why four headlights were illegal in some states is beyond me.
