Petition to Remove the Washington State Front License Plate Requirement
By Rob Einaudi
Editor-in-Chief
Do you guys have this stupid law in your state? In Washington you are required to have a front license plate unless you have a “collector car” like my old Mopar. Someone put together a petition to remove the Washington state front license plate requirement. I guess it gets brought up every year and never goes anywhere. Still, might be worth signing if you’re a Washington state resident and hate this law as much as we do.

Same in MASS!!! Maybe someone should put a petition together in each state, combine them, and present that to the FEDS… I know, I know… I’m an idiot!!

I can already see my ZR-1 with a big ‘ol honkin front bracket and plate! There should be an exception if its a super car. Texas needs to do away with em and make a windshield sticker they can scan like a UPC bar code, LOL.

I never knew there were places you didn’t have this law. Here in Australia you have it in every state, and there’s no real problem. Collecters cars don’t need it, but everyone else does. I honestly don’t see the problem except for a one-off extra $100 to buy new plates.

at least some US states have it, up here in Ontario and i’m pretty sure for most of Canada you have to have the front license plate no matter what, which is stupid..

Don’t feel bad. Ohio has this law too, but I don’t think they care if you have a collector or not, you have to have the plate no matter what. The argument for it is so you can have ample time to get the number by reading both front and rear if you have to. Some vehicles are built with a mounting point in the front bumper, and the plates don’t look too bad there, but what is really annoying is seeing an extremely aerodynamic car like an ’02 Firebird and that same plate is blocking the airdam. We could get an extra 2mpg if we didn’t have to have that plate there.

Meh, I don’t have one on my car, I’ve gotten a ticket and a warning. It’s a non moving violation, so I don’t really care…

Front Plates are going to make it to more states in the future for one reason only, to issue more tickets. When you have a front plate, it makes it easier for the Highway Patrol to target the plate for speeding violations (it’s the flattest part of the front end). Cities want the front plates or Camera Equipped Traffic Lights so that they can send tickets to people who happen to go through the lights. They are also quite useful for Speed Cameras, since they have the plate number, and a picture of the driver all in one shot. It’s all about revenue generation.

im glad NC dont have it, it doesnt mkae any sense, i think the front license plate is to display ur own unique tag that represents your personality, not a state tag (they only do it to get more money i think!)
