Is This Car Really Worth $175,000?

By Ron Honig

WaytooFurious

I came across this Plymouth Fury on E-bay the other day. There is no doubt that it is a sensational car because it looks like a lot of time and money has been spent on it. What I find interesting is that the Buy It Now is set at $175,000. Is it really worth that much? Personally, for me, it’s not. With cars it is very easy to get excited about a project and over-capitalise. It reminds me of a client that we had when I was selling cars for a living. He had invested thousands in doing up a standard Ford Falcon. He had installed a racing motor and racing gearbox as well as various other bits and pieces. The problem was that we could not take it as a trade in because he wanted too much money for it. Also he would never get back the amount of money that he had invested in it by selling it privately. I don’t know what he did with his car in the end, but I do know that he was very disappointed because it was not as easy to sell as he thought it would be. So have you ever over-capitalised on a car?

Its a hard thing to judge how much your car is worth, I know that my Z I sold was worth way more then the 7000 I gave it away for, but I wasn’t in a situation to argue. So I guess it comes down to letting go of something if you want an outrageous amount of money on it chances are you don’t want to let it go. However no amount of money really ever can pay for the blood sweat and tears you put in a car. With that said though I say it depends on the buyer, if he is some rich jerk with a ton of money let him pay the high price for it, if it is someone who has dreamed of that car for a long time don’t make him pay to a point were he would never dare drive it.

How did your hobby get stolen from you Kevin? I don’t understand, this guy took at as far as he wanted. Well Kevin how far would you go with your project?

It is because of the supper rich we average people have had our car hobby taken from us. 15 to 20 years ago the average person could buy any old car they wanted and fix it up for a resonable amount of money. Now MOPAR’s, GM’s and Fords are way over priced, I am sure that the time and money totals that amount and it is a nice car but I think I would buy a 70 Challenger or a 69 Charger befor I would buy this car.

That is no doubt an amazing looking car, and from the pictures it looks completley custom so i think it would sell for that much if the right buyer came around, but personaly if i had 175,000 to spend on a car I’d probably buy a new Vette ZR1 or somthing.

somewhere out there, there is someone looking for a car probibly just like this willing to pay whatever, just because perhaps it was in a dream. a price is a price 175,000 is just probibly a ballpark number an he just figures it as a decent price, we all know how hard it is to let something go weve put so much time, money into, then have to sell it for a fraction of what weve put in. so him asking 175k isnt bad its more personal sake, im sure he knows he wont get it all back.

So…Echiman, is it? Did you pick out those floormats? Purple huh, what are they, rubber too? Red engine? C’mon, dude! Money can buy a lot of things, BUT IT CAN’T BUY TASTE!!!

ech is a douche, car looks gay as fuck

as far as this 175,000 dollar car goes, I think he should have realized that the money put in will rarely come back out, especially since the car doesn’t seem to be very original

but basically its worth whatever someone is willing to pay for it

You dont understand the amount of money it would take to build a car like this. Id be willing to say he’s got more than 175,000 in it!

Right now there is a huge market for resto-mods/pro touring cars but I think 175,000 is a stretch…Very slim that you get back out of a car of how much $$$ you put into it.80,000 to 100,000 would be about right..

No mass-produced car is worth that much. Person who buys it should go back to school.”

no mass-produced car is worth $175,000? other then Lamborghini’s, Ferrari’s, Porsche’s, aston martin’s, bentley’s, rolls royce’s and maybach’s/mercedes? (this is without mentioning bugatti, Pagani, koenigsegg and a few other car companies that the average person wouldnt have ever heard of)
now im sure no plymouth fury was manufactured with a price tag of $175,000… but there are a large amount of mass-produced vehicles “worth” $175k…

hahah i love when people make snide comments like they know something

If I had to take a guess I’ld say thats a Foose Designed vehicle. If the owner wants to put the money into it and fix it up he should get a good profit if he/she sells it. Don’t down people cause they want to make money. I could see a celeb buying that car for the advert 175k. To the guy who thiks its a POS you need to adjust your eyes.

This car is absolutely beautiful… I’d pay maybe $80k for it, but not $175,000. I hope the owner does get a lot out of it or just ends up keeping it because it truly is a beaut.

And Eichmann, your car is a piece of Scheiße. I mean it is terrible. German rice FTL =( And that’s either not you, or you can’t type your name correctly.

It’s def. a quality car! Everything looks professional, but he’s not gonna get what he wants for it~~~maybe if it was a clone of a 58 Fury like the one from the movie “Christine”….or if it was a more sought-after car like a 55 or 57 Belair, but i don’t see that many people spending being willing to spend that kind on $ on this car

Jan 30, 2009 at 9:57 pm

That is a beautiful car, and just for the record my definition of nice is not a used 94 Mercedes, Echiman. This car is worth a ballpark figure of just about um, say fifteen to twenty times what your car is worth. I’m basing this on your car being worth about eight grand which should be close, Correct me If I’m wrong. So sorry bud don’t get up tomorrow and come here to start hating people because they have a better car than you just go eat some breakfast and go for a nice day long sit in your car and leave us alone.

Echiman is an asshole. I dont care what you have, nothing is as fun to have or drive than a custom classic such as this one. I dont care if you have a freakin space shuttle, I would take this over any super car out there. Cept’ maybe a Ford GT

Justin
Jan 30, 2009 at 4:27 pm

175k for a one off creation, thousands of hours spent on just the paint work alone. you have to think, your not spending the money on the car its for the craftsmanship and the legacy that your buying. its like a ferrari you spend atleast 150k on the name itself then like 100k on the car.

Astronomical weight to cash balance’,whats that like a 100 bucks a pound-ha no big deal!

I think with anything, an item is only worth as much as someone is willing to pay for it.

Brayden sauve

It’s only Worth what people are willing to pay for it. if there willing to pay 175, then that is what it’s worth in my opinion.

more or less that is way to high for our shitty economy. i eat my words if it sells for that much.

Tony Cassa
Jan 30, 2009 at 2:24 pm

Josh, when selling a car, you do not incorporate your time / effort into the selling price. I think the car looks fantastic. And a 175k asking price isn’t surprising. I can’t beleive prices for cars have come to that however. Look at the price of hotrods nowadays, their a perfect example of what was once a simple hobbie now turned into a multi-million dollar business. I’m not complaining, but unfortunatly most rods are out of reach for the general enthusiast. Same goes with muscle cars. You would know this Ron, with the Monaro’s and GT’s of our time. Who can afford one of them now, when 10 years ago they were the prices of a 2nd hand SS Commodore. And that’s a fact.

I think so, it looks like the fit/finish and modern updates are good. The quality is probably better than a new car that cost that much.

That twin supercharged mustang called “obsidion” is for sale.
And last time i checked it was worth 1.3 million dollars.

Chris
Jan 30, 2009 at 9:55 am

Yea, there’s more than 175g’s in that car. Problem is, in this economic climate, he’s dreaming. Also, customs just aren’t worth as much as original cars. With customs, beauty is generally in the eye of the beholder, which isn’t good for everybody.

Rutkas
Jan 30, 2009 at 9:53 am

175 really isn’t that bad for something of that caliber

Josh
Jan 30, 2009 at 9:50 am

Absolutely! There’s probably more than half that put into it! Man’s gotta make his money back for the time and effort…it’s beautiful!
