NAIAS 2009 Screening of Audi's Truth in 24

By Matt Wellumson

Neuwerks

During our yearly trip to NAIAS, we often have the opportunity to attend special events put on by the various manufacturers. For 2009 they were somewhat scarce (likely due to the economy), and largely invitation only. Audi, however, was actively handing out invites to a special screening of their Le Mans racing Documentary titled “Truth in 24.”

The film documents the 2008 racing season for Audi’s three year old V10 TDI, and showcased their battle with Peugeot’s Diesel while gearing up to the 24 hour LeMans race. What surprised me was the fact that production of this film was hired out to NFL Films, as opposed to companies that normally work with racing or auto-related documentary films.  Without giving up too much of the story, I want to mention that this film really goes behind the scenes and covers much more than just the drivers at Audi. The film also looks into the mechanics, managers, and the Le Mans equivalent of a crew chef. Continue reading after the jump.

By Joseph DeLucca

Luxvelocity

If you see someone driving the new Pagani Zonda R on city roads report them immediately—this is in fact a rocket ship for the racetrack only. Pagani says the new Zonda R demolished the Ring in 7:27:82, with lateral G forces of almost 1.5 G. Pagani is only building 25 of these supercars, and they’re all spoken for. Colac Custom Car Show 2009

By Ron Honig

WaytooFurious

Last weekend I went to check out the 2009 Colac Custom Car Show. I really enjoyed myself. The event was even better than last year because it was a slightly cooler day. There were a lot of classic cars and bikes on show. One of the bikes that I though was great was this home made trike. It looked as if it was powered by some sort of lawn mower engine. More pictures after the jump.

I’m sure that the Stormtrooper was quite proud of himself, driving an Exige and all. But I think we can now safely conclude that Darth Vader is faster. See the Exige after the jump! Via VWVortex

Final Bids at Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale: Too Low, Too High, or a Mixed Bag?

By Jim Brennan

UDMan

Within the last week, Barrett-Jackson held their Spring Auction in Scottsdale, Arizona. This is THE sale that usually determines the pricing that prominent collectible automobiles and trucks might be able to command over the next year. Because of the importance of this particular event, it is being covered by almost every automotive blog, print journal, and cable television channel, including Speed, Car and Driver, and of course, CarDomain. Based on the winning bid prices hammered at the close of the event on Saturday evening, it looks like the collectible car is being sought as a safe haven for an attractive investment. Out of over 320 Cars, Trucks, and Motorcycles sold on Saturday, 125 of them fetched over $100,000, Like the car illustrated below, the Buick Blackhawk, which sold for an astonishing $522,500, on a Scrap Title no less! Only one vehicle went over $1 million, and that was in fact the Ford Tri-Motor Airplane.

NorthWest GTG

By Weston Henderson

This weekend Seattle finally broke out of the perma-gray cloud cover and man did the cars come out in force! Ryan and I had both seen postings on our forums about some regional GTGs (get togethers) that were all going to culminate into one giant annual GTG out at Alki.  Needless to say being the car nuts that we are, we decided to go.

As Ryan and I were approaching the parking lot we scoped two twin GTRs rolling the opposite direction. It turned out that the Alki group was a little too big and got broken up by the cops. Luckily the majority of the cars ended up meeting at another location about ten miles away. This spot eventually got busted up, too, but not before I snapped a few pictures to share with all of you!

Seattle still has a strong motoring community—screw the stagnant economy! This weekend really reminded me of summer and has me contemplating picking up some new 19′s for my whip. I have a ton more pics after the jump! See even more pics at Honda-tech, 8thCivic, NWMotoring and StangNation.

2010 Taurus is Hot

By Katherine Helmetag

Atomicalex

My favorite detail of the new Taurus is the logo font—it’s totally retro and a throwback to the days when the Taurus was the hottest thing on the road. The new Taurus seriously impressed Rob and me, and it’s going to be very competitive. It’s based on the MKS platform and shares the basic profile, but the shared components pretty much stop at the floor pan. The interior has great detailing, with piped panels in the door cards and this wave motif that carries through all the way to the bottoms of the cupholders. The exterior has plenty of visual interest that flows into the cabin over the dashboard. Hedonistic! The Sync system will include the non-subscription text-based GPS, navi, and crash locating system that Ford has developed for people who don’t want to pay every month. The suspension will be sportier than the MKS (thank heaven!). Ford is going back to its roots with this version—the right place to go, IMO. Thanks to Matt and Mike for the killer video. Tons of pics after the jump!

Vertex E92 M3 D1GP Drift Car

By Ben Schaffer

The Real JDM

For the past six months so many of my friends in the industry over in Japan have been talking about the build up of this car. If there was one car being produced in 2008 that generated the most hype in Japan, this car is it.

Oddly that hype has been seemingly limited in North America…so much in fact that after reading countless blogs and posts about the car’s debut at TAS, nobody seems to mention one of the most important facts regarding the car…the engine.

This E92 M3 widebody drift car uses a 2JZGTE Supra twin turbo engine. There, finally its been said. Continue reading…
