Old vs. New
By Rob Einaudi
Editor-in-Chief
These two Bimmers are parked across the street from our office—I just snapped this pic from my cube. I’ve always loved the 80s 5-series—they just look so tough. As for the newer 3-series… I’m still not so sure. How about you? Which do you prefer? Old or new?

The 80′s BMW’s are the best. I am now on my third late 80′s E30 ragtop and have loved every one of them!!

In reality, I’d choose the newer one (better resale value), but in theory…I could have both! I have to respect the old school Beamer though: so much more character.

I love the new styles… More luxury and quiter and a meaner sound out the back end. You can never go wrong with the classic 80′s James Bond Bimmers!!! So fast and sporty… These are the reasons why the newer BMW are so fantastic!!! Which will I buy over the other. The Newer for one for reliablility (minus the computer issues) and the older one for pure sport!!! Lets go…

I love all M3′s, and lets be honest, the newer they get, the meaner they are… however, If I could pick one to be in my garage, I’ll take an E30.

i would have to say that any BMW series was at its best in the 80′s (with the exception of i850)….that was/is the most beautiful BMW ever…

I don’t get it. I always thought the older BMWs were butt-ugly, only bested, well worsted by old SAABs. Any ride that looks like size 300 footwear (’80s 900 and 9000 series Saab) is a guaranteed win in an ugliness contest.

Anyway, the biggest disturbance when I look at the old BMers is the tilt-forward grill (and a lot of it), with the picture frame grill pieces in the middle. Couple that with body lines that fortunately are too boring to insight nausea and there you have it… no love lost.

I couldn’t choose, really its for all cars, you gotta love newer styling, performance, and the luxuries inside but old because there wasn’t all the safety crap that’s loaded in every car now.

it’s funny that the E90 3-series is visibly larger than the E28 5-series.
OLD BMW, of course.

If I had to choose, old. But I cant be too sure unless I get a chance to thrash them both around a track. Can anyone arrange this?

I love the E30 and E46 M3s. I’m not too much of a fan of new BMWs, but I could easily live with an E60 M5. Or any generation M5…

Current 3 series is a bloated and dulled image of its former self. 80′s 5 series FTW.
