Was Junior Responsible For Daytona Catastrophe?
By Jen Dunnaway
Editor
Oh my god, the Daytona 500. I’ve been looking forward to it for months–months!–and apart from the rain delay that handed Matt Kenseth the win (congrats to him anyway), Daytona’s fabled superspeedway did not disappoint. One point of contention was the “controversial” wreck on lap 124 triggered by Brian Vickers and Dale Earnhardt Jr. that sent race cars scattering like marbles and swept out a quarter of the field, including past champs and credible contenders for the win. No one who witnessed Fox Sports’ two-dozen-or-so replays can help but have an opinion about the hellacious crash. From what I saw, Vickers basically ran Earnhardt off the racetrack and then got his just desserts when Junior bobbed back up from the infield shoulder, clipping Vickers in the left rear and sending him into a spin that caused a ten-car pileup. But the prevailing buzz is that Junior’s “pent-up frustration” after an entire week of pit mishaps was what compelled him to orchestrate the disastrous wreck, a perspective echoed by Vickers himself (that redheaded stepchild) who accused Earnhardt of “intentionally wrecking in front of the whole field” just so that he could benefit from the ensuing caution. I dunno, it just don’t sit right: Earnhardt typically isn’t a driver who fights that kind of dirty. And from the broadcast, it was pretty clear (especially from the No. 88 car’s on-board footage, which we didn’t get to see until after the race) that Earnhardt had a legitimate run on Vickers, who dove to the bottom only at the last possible moment, becoming the instrument of his own undoing. It was too late for Junior to check up, and if he he’d tried, it was more than likely that the subsequent shockwave would’ve caused an equally catastrophic wreck in the back of the field, albeit one that Vickers would have conveniently sailed away from, unscathed. But hell, I’ll admit that my opinion is biased by my guarded admiration for Earnhardt and my impression of Vickers as “one of those Red Bull Toyota yahoos” who get recruited on the basis of image and swagger rather than on any real chops as stock-car drivers. I dunno: was it a boneheaded move by Vickers that wrecked the field? Or is Junior really that much of a dick?

Really the question is what is the bigger travesty of 2009′s Daytona 500? The wreck JR caused or the fact that it ended under a rain delay? Seriously this stuff happens everyweek in NASCAR guys, wrecks are a part of auto racing. No one can predict what or how things will happen. Personally I think JR was in the wrong place wrong time and got boo’d for it. But I think the fact that the biggest race of the season ended under caution due to rain. I understand a few races ending under that rule but the Daytona 500… come on there were so many contendors for the win that had used pit strategy and were at the back of the pack. The points battle will be a serious mess till mid season because of the rain delayed finish. Lets hope some of these crazy and sometimes stupid rules get changed so we can enjoy NASCAR and not the NFL.

Well to be honest with you all I think that MONEY has ruined NASCAR period. And I also believe that racing should get back the way it should be back when you could build your own racecar and go race on sunday after church.

Oh and I watched the Daytona 500 I don’t think Dale met to cause that wreck and I don’t think Vicker met to run him off the track. I think he was just trying to block him and Dale was just trying to get back into the race. It was just a little bump saying HEY MAN NICE TRY.

OK I have nothing against Nascar, but just because people are talking about how much they hate Nascar don’t mean you have to bring FOOTBALL into it lol. Nascar is no where near as physical as FOOTBALL, So who ever said that I hope your typing druck. How would you like to step onto a FOOTBALL field for 16 weeks shright with 6’7-6’9 370lbs giants that can run a 4.9 in the 40 and can binch press 550lbs. and 250 guys who can run a 4.2 in the 40. Nascat drive around in a circle 500 times wow. FOOTBALL GET YOUR HEAD KNOCK INTO THE FUCKING GROUND for 3 hours. Which would you rather do?

Amen for Don. To Answer the question I think it was a little bit of both, mostly Jr. though and my favorite driver is Jr. Before the incident Jr. was definitely already pissed for two pit stop mishaps, first missing his pit box totally then again got put a lap down for not fully being in his pit box on his next trip in. So I’m sure that Vickers cutting him off when he definitely had the run and had him beat for that spot, pissed him off pretty good. Jr. claims he got him on accident trying to correct from the small contact Vickers had on him when he went down to block. Watching replays though, I’m just not convinced that that’s what truly happened. If it was an accident it was after Jr. had control of his car and tried to blend back in to the pack, even then the contact with Vickers was so slight that it surprised me that it threw him off that much. Anyhow, because of Jr.’s prior frustrations and his control of his vehicle I feel that it was very possible that it was intentional to make contact with Vickers weather it was to crash him or to just give him a message saying he knew he was there.

Getting back on topic, like said before, Vickers should be able to block, but that was too much too late. I’m not a big fan of any NASCAR but I clearly think that Vickers shouldnt have done such a stupid move in the lead pac while a lap down…

Same goes for baseball and football. Lmao You’re not making any sense. Why would you compare NASCAR to Basketball anyways? I don’t know about you, but I’d rather see a 7 foot guy doing some crazy dunks instead of watching a bunch of drunks learning how to drive around in a circle without crashing. It’s embarrassing to see how the Europeans have super motor sports like Formula 1 when we the United States, the “greatest country on Earth” only got people driving in circles.

Wow….Hey Southern Guy….Hows things?
Mr NRA…lighten up huh?
The arguments here are fairly lame. Stock car racing sucks—no it doesn’t—-yes it does—you suck—no you suck—
Wow. Whatever. I believe the question was ‘Who caused the Spectacular crash sunday a the the 51st Daytona 500?’
Circle Track racing is true motorsports, whether or not you think it sucks. It was born out of a desire to break the boredome between running moonshine from the late 20′s through the early 40′s. They raced in Farmers fields in cars barely able to break 80 mph on a straight-a-way. They were men at the age of 17, handling machinery only a half step removed from farm equiptment, at break neck speed, for a few dollars at the finish line.
Whats real racing then NRA? Open wheelers at Indy? Thunder at the strip? SCCA? Rally?
Racing in motor sport is defined as a powered vehicle of two wheels or more competing against fellow competitors, or a timed event (racing against the clock).
So why all the fuss?
So Who caused the accident at the 500?
I love cars. All cars…even that ugly BMW on the blog page. Stands to reason, I like all motorsport too.
So can we lighten up a little?

Honestly, I kind of agree with buck here: “On a serious note, the only time NASCAR is anything close to being entertaining is when there is a wreck. So whoever was at fault, I thank them.”

It does get tend to get dull, and wrecks are quite entertaining. I won’t go as far as calling it retarded though.

I prefer smaller dirt ovals, local tracks.

Its funny how people think nascar is simply “drive around a big ass circle for countless laps.” Well im canadian, and even we know nascar is a heck of a lot more than that. Racing in nascar is one of the most physically demanding sports there is. These guys are in their cars, racing for hours on end. They don’t have time to stop and hydrate or take any kind of break. In football, basketball, hockey, you go hard for around a minute, then take a breather, grab some gatorade and cool down. Those same sports dont have near the same stress levels as the drivers, who are constantly worrying about tire wear, fuel, other drivers, etc. In those sports, the only things they have to worry about are cleats and equipment, most of which they have a couple hundred options too and can change in seconds. If they lose, they go home, sleep on, let the coach design a new game plan, come back the next day, and try all over. Nascar drivers have one shot to get their cars right, if it doesnt work then there SOL and not getting paid. They start to head to next weeks race, always having what they could/will do different on their minds for the next race. So just because you cant drive standard, most likely have a 4 banger car, and nearly crap your pants when you pass 60 mph, you dont have to come up with an excuse that nascar is a joke, because deep down you envy these guys and the courage and passion they have. And for most of you that think that nascar isn’t a sport, neither was the MATHletes that you were apart of in highschool

NRA – I AGREE WITH YOU!!!
Nascar is pointless, maybe it is kinda taugh to drive 200 MP/H for few hours, but again, what’s the point of Nascar?!?!?!
It’s BORING, watching 50 cars drive around the circle!
It is complicated, it takes alot of concentration and endurance, but it’s not my cup of tea.

I don’t hardly watch NASCAR anymore but I did watch the Daytona 500 this year. I would say that Vickers was def being a jerk and if Jr. did on purpose (which I really don’t think he did) good for him! Vickers shouldn’t've made that block to begin with and it at least added some excitement to what, with the rained out ending, was a pretty dull race.
P.S. I agree with joe and SouthernGuy8503.

NRA – you talk about how stupid nascar is, well if you want to simplify it like that lets simplify other sports, baseball all you do is hit a ball with a stick and run around in a circle, basketball all you do is bounce a ball back and forth and shoot it in a hole, football all you do is run back and forth down a feild and kick it between 2 poles, hockey all you do is skate on ice and shoot a round black puck in a net, soccer all you do is run up and down a field kicking a ball and kick it in a net, drag racing all you do is drive STRAIGHT for 1/8 mile or 1/4 mile, indy cars all look the fucking same, in nascar they might all be the same but with different fake body panals but they have a ford, chevy, dodge or toyota engine in them, plus everybody that talks trash about nascar think its easy, i beat yall can’t even drive a car for more than 2 hours constantly let alone for 4 hours for more at 180 mph, also yall are probably the ones talking on your little cell phone cutting people off and can’t drive in the first place, you people hating on nascar just have nothing better to do, oh and by the way, i might be a redneck but im damn proud of it and i’ll always live in the south and drive a big loud ass fucking truck that will run over your little import cars, so all you people talking trash about nascar go get a life, oh and don’t forget to buy some more viagra to lol, oh and if you dont’ like nascar or rednecks then you can kiss my white redneck ass

Junior wasnt at fault it was vickers he shouldnt have came down like he did and as far as junior hitting him he was just gettin back in line and vickers was just there at the wrong time and maybe he should have had the pedal down all the way and not driving like a geezer and because he slowed up thats why junior hit him plus thats real racing and maybe its time to bring that era back and make it exciting again plus they should have started earlier and it wouldnt have ended early under rain because that aint earning the win so its just getting rediculous so u can talk shit about junior all u want but maybe they should get rid of these no talent no namers that bitch and whine and cant take it like men. GO 88!

Feb 17, 2009 at 11:34 am
Russ, if he stayed below the yellow line and tried to make the pass it would have cause a similar wreck due to the banked turn coming up…it obviously wasnt on purpose, if it was he wouldve hit him in the corner panel. Jr had a great run on Vickers but vickers decided to play rough and ended up screwin himself and everyone else up.
Russ
Feb 17, 2009 at 8:58 am
Chris Bicknell you are the idiot, Junior was driving like a jerk for the 300 and the 500. I was there and saw both, the way JR was driving….I am surprised that anyone would let him race on that track!
I am trying to figure out how JR has so many fans, it must be cause his dad was one of the greatest…it sure can’t be because of his racing skills! His pit crew sucked…..plain and simple, he should have stayed low…..yeah he got blocked, that’s racing…you snooze you lose. But instead of following protocol after he went inside the yellow line, he had to be an asshole and cause a 10 car crash!
I suppose I should thank JR cause my guy “Matt Kenseth” won, yeah….it was JR’s fault all the way…NO DOUBT!

I see it this way. Both drivers are to blame. JR had the run on Vickers, and Vickers threw a late block. But JR could have easily gotten out of the gas. He didn’t have to go all the way to the apron and entirely below the double yellow line. Yes he did have to move left some, but he was too dramatic with his actions. It was a combination of both of them being stupid, but JR had a whole lot more stupid with him that day. You can clearly see JR cut the wheel hard right when he still had a 1/4 of the nose at Vickers’ quarter panel. I don’t know why JR did it, but that was 100% intentional if you watch the video and watch JR. It was a real dick move and he knows it. In the post race interview you could see it in his eyes, he was making shit up. He doesn’t usually do interviews like the one he did yesterday. Even when he is fumed he still has better composure. I see it as 25% Vickers fault and 75% JR’s fault. It was a shame that he did that in the front of the field, taking out some good cars.

Vickers didn’t just block Jr. He made contact, and he’s lucky he didn’t cause the big wreck when he did that. If you watch the video Vickers cuts down so fast that he hits Jr’s right front Fender. I have no idea how JR didn’t wreck then. I think its because he stayed on the throttle, and got back up into the banking.
Had Vickers dropped him bellow the yellow and caused him to wreck Vickers would have probably had threats a la Kyle Busch when he wrecked Jr. last season. (But Kyle Busch has proven at least that he can drive and win.)
Brad
Feb 16, 2009 at 8:43 am
I agree with everyone. Vickers knew that Jr. was coming and he had no reason to block him at the last possible second and Jr. accidently clipped Vickers, so i believe its not Jr.s fault at all. At the end of the race, Jr. said he didn’t even know that Vickers was also fitting for the luck dog position. Vickers is just an moron.

why is evreybody making this such a big deal, not on here but eveywhere, vickers had every right to block but not when JR had that good of a run on him so vickers didn’t let him pass like a man so he pushed all the way to the grass almost, JRs car was all the way over the double line so that was too much of a block, and JR just misjudged when coming back up, so its both of their faults, if vickers would have let him pass since JR had that good of a run on him or when he blocked him just block a little then JR wouldn’t have been pushed all the way down to the damn grass and it never would have happened, so its both of the drivers fault if not more of vickers fault, its just a normal wreck like in every other race, i bet if it wasn’t JR and was someone else that it wouldn’t be this big of a deal, i think the truth is that all the JR haters are mad that they thought he was a bad driver when he was with DEI and when he went to Hendrick last year they found out it was DEIs equipment, not JR, there’s a reason that JR made it into the chase, i wish people would just let it go, if JR really did it on purpose he would have hit vickers a hell of a lot harder and probably would have took himself out with vickers, people think jsut because of his dad that he’s an aggressive driver and that he was given everything, just grow the hell up and let it go, and of course Vickers would say that, why wouldn’t he, anybody that gets in a wreck is going to say something to make it seem like its not their fault, DW himself has known JR his whole life, DW is close friends with the Earhardt family, at first he said he wasn’t sure what happened but after JR was actually asked, DW said that JR wouldn’t lie about racing, JR has admitted to being at fault before, all everybody wants to do is assume shit, nobody knows what was going through both of their heads and you know what who really cares, it was a damn wreck in nascar, it wasn’t the first one, every nascar driver has somehow started a chain reaction of a wreck and wasn’t attentional, i know eveybody will eventually let it go by next sunday but damn its not that big of a deal, JR didn’t do it on purpose, niether one did anything on purpose, yes JR was making stupid mistakes in the pit box but evreybody has bad days and maybe he had personally things on his mind, and i do understand that JR could have been frustrated from eveything but JR wouldn’t have purposly wrecked vickers, of course i don’t know what was going through their minds so its no telling who was at fault more than the other, they both mad mistakes, JR after being pushed over the line probably just wanted to get back in line of the cars asap so he didn’t lose anymore position and jsut misjudged it, so JR could have avoided it yes but wasn’t attentinal, also vickers was the one that pushed JR all the way down there when he shoudln’t have, vickers should have let him go sinec JR had that good of a run on him or if vickers did still block to not block him that bad, but just my opinion lol, im a JR fan, i was his dads fan first and then became JRs fan, im not taking up for JR because he was a little af fault but he wasn’t completely all at fault, if you want to argue with me about it i’ll be happy to lol

Doesn’t everyone else see that Vickers is an idiot? The whole thing was his fault and he got what he deserved! I feel for all the other guys that were taken out in the wake but Dale Jr. was not to blame. Screw Vickers and the whole Red Bull team! Like you said, what a bunch of yahoos!
Nice blog Jen! Keep up the good work…..
