What Did You Do This Weekend?

By Weston Henderson

Weston Henderson

I got a sweet set of rims from VMR but they didn’t offer them in the color that I wanted. So, I painted them. Now before you all go chastising me, I used a spray gun set up and am going to have a friend clear coat them for me. That’s not to say you can’t get great results from a rattle can, and in fact I would have done it that way if I could have found the color I was looking for. Here is an example of how they should turn out.

It took a little work to get over putting the initial scratches in the brand new 19s, but these puppies came out nice in my opinion. I figured a gold face with the chrome lip would look the best, so I tapped the lip off really well prior to sanding and painting.

Here’s the way the rims looked originally. More pics, including the finished product, after the jump!

Taping off the rim was actually really easy because the chrome lip was a seperate piece from the face and a nice groove was provided for me to run the tape.

Sanding the rims was a pain but I wanted to make sure I got every part.

Sanded down…

First coat

Third coat

Final coat

I’ll have another update for you guys after I get these clear coated this weekend and get some rubber on ‘em.

What did you do this weekend?

Should clear coat go on top of that kind of paint? I’ve heard that it messes with the luster of silver and gold tones. I’d like to paint my steelies when ever I get them in, warm weather pleeaaaaase! I’ve been waiting on a set for almost two months now.

That dub meet looks sweet! Especially liking the flat black beetle with racks.

As for the multiple questions and praises about the rims first, THANKS! Second, you definitely always sand before you paint (david) yes you should all try and paint rims at some point in your tuning, and yes it definitely takes me back too!

Thanks guys!

nice work. I was wondering how long should you let the paint dry on the wheels before driving with them, curious cause i think i’m gonna paint mine. As for my weekend, I worked and played wii.

I used the Duplicolor wheel paint in a can on some RX7 wheels to restore them. It was a base aluminum color with a clear coat. Turned out great and have lasted well.

I cleaned out my trailer this weekend.

If you do the job right, rattle cans can do an awesome finish. Done a few sets of rims, some to match some to better contrast depending on the rims and their ride.

The second pic down where the rims look almost gun metal gray is a gorgeous color….I might lightly scuff mine up and hit it with a light coat of charcoal or 2.. hopefully end up with a black chrome type look or something similar. … It takes balls ..congrats they look Nice

Damn it now I want to paint my rims! The polish is fadind!
.
I finally got around changing the oil and checking the suspension because of some odd noises it sometimes makes. I couldn’t find anything though. I’m guessing is just wear and nothing so serious. I also finally found out how to take of TC on my sister’s 538i and how to work the foglights! Damn that car is so complicated!!!
