Ford Taurus SHO vs. Pontiac G8 GXP: Which Would You Choose?

By Rob Einaudi

Editor-in-Chief

Ford made headlines recently when they announced that the SHO is coming back. Pontiac has been in the news as well, though it hasn’t really been good news. Still, the G8 GXP is one of the hottest Pontiacs to come along in a long time, so we thought this would be a good match up. With the SHO you get AWD, a 365 hp twin-turbo, direct-injection 3.5-liter V-6, and your only option is the paddle-shift 6-speed auto. The G8 GXP is RWD, has a 415 hp 6.2 liter pushrod V8, and it’s available with a 6-speed manual tranny. Both cars come in right around $38k. So, which would you choose?

I owned a Taurus and a Sable at the same time. Well, I guess I should say I survived owning a Taurus and a Sable at the same time.
-
The Sable was nicknamed the DISable and well I couldn’t come up with anything for the Taurus but it wasn’t any better.
-
Sure, they would do well in crashes but most of the time people drive… not crash.
-
I guess the longevity of today’s Taurus and Sable (they still make Sables?) is better. I certainly hope so because the ones I owned were WEAK to say the least. The only Ford I owned after them was a ‘99 Windstar which I sold only 5 months after buying it because I wanted to get out before something major broke. Also from front to back the paint had majorly cracked along the roof creases on both sides. I decided to sell it while it still looked good and was running.
-
I find it ironic that Ford is in better shape than GM presently.

taurus SHO ftw! twin turbo 365hp awd and awesome features inside.

plus throw a boost controller on there and up the boost another few psi, get it tuned, and be pushing more power than the G8 thru all four wheels

GTwildfire, its good ur pontiacs r running well for u. where i live, u would see 1-3 pontiacs every 3 blocks and about 60 percent of the cars ford, 30 percent gm and the rest japenese. many of my neighbors have owned pontiacs and so has my dad. theirs all died pretty quick where as i have neighbors with fords that r over 15 years old still runnning. theres a reason why GM is kicking pontiac off the assembly line. pontiacs almost as bad as a saturn, lol

GTwildfire
Feb 26, 2009 at 8:03 pm

who the hell drives pontiacs anymore?? i dont see them on the road anymore and its about to get kicked off GMs assembly line. i would take the SHO anyday because 1- its a FORD! 2- taurus` r very reliable i still see the really old ones all over the place here in ny 3-AWD 4-TWIN TURBO 5-ECO BOOST 6-PEDDAL SHIFTERS so much more. Pontiacs basically dead already

Hello Rick. Snow is one thing, you can at least get some sort of grip with snow. Believe me, I lived about 5 years of my childhood in Syracuse, N.Y., but ice is something completely different! I live in the DFW area of Texas now. Winters here are almost always ice. I also used to own an ‘05 Mustang GT with traction control, I’m also familiar with driving it on ice. So RWD with traction control can’t save you from sliding on ice. You get a RWD 3,000+lb. car sliding on ice even going 30mph, you’re basically fucked…Nice expensive new G8 GXP, say hello to either one of two things – ass-end of the P.O.S. in front or the guard rail!

def going w the g8 im american muscle all the way although turbo + all wheel drive does have its advantages the 4 door w/ hella horses is the way to go

Michael

Ok on second thought, after looking at the pictures the SHO looks pretty damn ugly to me, the interior looks ok. I’d take the GXP for sure!

Matthew
Feb 26, 2009 at 12:47 pm

WOW I cant wait for next year for what people are going to say when they put the 2010 Mustang Cobra kr500 v.s. a 2010 Camaro Z28

Michael
Feb 26, 2009 at 12:44 pm

Tough decision here. Based on which car company will be around longer, probably Ford. I looked for the weight on the SHO, but couldn’t find it and I was unaware Ford was even bringing back the SHO. My dad has a 04 GTO and noticed a few rattles today. Plus the G8 GT is pretty quick for the price compared to the GXP. The GTO has about 50/50 weight distribution, traction control, limited slip, and we run blizzak snow tires, gets around fine! But AWD would be nice and I’m sure the turbos could be tuned, I might actually go with the Ford!

greg
Feb 26, 2009 at 12:35 pm

great sexy styling, V8 power, manual tranny, and rear wheel drive. come on people this should be easy, the G8 GXP is WAY better. and plus its competting with a FORD. fords r trash but what the hell, anything is better than a shitty import:)

Rick V.
Feb 26, 2009 at 12:22 pm

I like how people bring up the fact that because it’s rear-drive, somehow it’s completely immobile in the snow. I drove a ‘99 Miata without ABS and balding tires through several winters in horrid New Jersey traffic along tractor trailers and what not–it’s totally do-able! Perhaps not to some of you chumps that are acting like it’s not, but trust me, it is.

Josh: I do like Subaru’s AWD approach better because they still use a proper/better FR layout; a longitude-mounter motor and transmission (and who doesn’t love a boxer engine?) rather than Ford’s FF transversely mounter motor and transaxle ftl. I personaly think the Subaru Legacy 2.5GT is an absolutely brilliant car! Nonetheless, with today’s traction control, stability control and other electro-nannies onboard, there’s never been a BETTER time to make a case for rear-drive Sedans. There’s a reason why Mercedes and BMW never stopped making rear-drive, and why the Japanese luxury divisions have been building them that way.

The Protojekid: I’m with you 100% there buddy, that and the engine/tranny layout for me too.

Feb 26, 2009 at 11:24 am

i am not usually a ford fan but i gotta say this is a good one. i love both of these cars but the deciding factor in this one for me is the manual transmission, call me old fashioned but i love the clutch.

Josh
Feb 26, 2009 at 10:55 am

…You’d have to catch me first David! I’ve said it before, RWD in a sedan these days is pointless. Take that $38,000 cashere’s check from the bank and get a Subaru…

MrGxp
Feb 26, 2009 at 10:48 am

Its no contest the G8 Gxp all the way. Looks better and has way more power.Sure it does not have all wheel drive who cares.Thats why they made 4×4 trucks. The sho at least could have gotten a V8. This sho looks better but in the end its still a ford (Fix And Repair Daily) Need I say more.

Feb 26, 2009 at 9:53 am

WOW TOUGH CALL, Im a Ford man but I do own a G5 right now and Im very happy with it so Pontiac does appeal to me but that new Taurus is such a huge change in looks(for the better)then all the others b4 it, its a hot car 4 sure. But the G8 is just as nice, V8 415hp 6 speed tranny and the Taurus a V6 365hp Paddle shift Twin turbo, like I said TOUGH CALL, but I think I gotta go with G8.Props to CARDOMAIN.COM for this “SHOdown” between the two cars!

G8, it seems so far ahead of the Taurus even though the latter has not come out yet!

Dylan
Feb 26, 2009 at 9:08 am

G8 all the way! It looks a whole lot better than the SHO, due to the added body kit, spoiler, and hood vents (plus you wouldn’t see your grandma driving it). Also, it has more power and a manual trans option. So what if it isn’t all wheel drive!!

Franxou
Feb 26, 2009 at 9:07 am

I was leaning toward the SHO because I’m the son of a ford guy even tough the G8 is RWD and (I though) the SHO was FWD but when I’ve read that the SHO was going to be AWD, well the vote is going straight to the SHO. Twin turbo AWD v6 is a more modern drivetrain than the tried-and-truely great rwd v8 so it’s gonna bring something new to the north-american offering. The Taurus looks like it’s going to be a great car and the sports version can just be better, plus the G8 isn’t tailored for the weather here (rwd+snowy and iced roads is fun to play on but when you have to go to work and the tail keep spinning out in corners or then going uphill it’s a pain in the ass).
SHO got my vote

Im going to go with the G8 by looks I’d say the SHO has the same weight issue as the Magnum SRT8 and the Charger SRT8. I don’t know there exact weights buy I imagine the G8 is the lightest by probably 100, 200 pds.

“Crank them up to 20psi, increasing fueling, maybe a water/methanol setup for detonation resistance, some diverter valves that can hold the boost (cause you KNOW Ford probably cheaped out there…), and maybe downpipes… I would say with basic performance mods like these, blown transmissons, since it’s a Ford, and a wiped out rear differential, since it’s based on a FF platform doesn’t sound unrealistic. Then watch your G8 idle away from a “broken grandma taurus.””

fixed.

IXLR8
Feb 26, 2009 at 4:39 am

The Taurus is a FRONT WHEEL DRIVE CAR ! They added the rear differential as an afterthought. The drivetrain will not take any more power. Actually the Taurus SHO ECM is currently limiting the torque, to keep the drivetrain from imploding. The G8 However is true rear drive V8 with an engine and drivetrain built for 550hp. I want to see the Taurus drift, I have seen video of the G8 doing it beautifully.

Rob
Feb 26, 2009 at 4:18 am

For $38k, looks and sound don’t mean much. A big motor is always nice, there really is no replacement for displacement. But what else is there? I’d have to go for the SHO all the way. For that price you get a smaller motor for great gas mileage and a twin turbo setup for excellent top end power. Not only that but you get an all-wheel drivetrain which allows for quicker off-the-line acceleration on street and better handling on dirt, wet roads, snow, and ice that rear wheel drive simply can’t compare to. Manny-matic technology is getting as quick as a standard transmission, all you don’t get with a paddle shifter is a clutch pedal. I think the G8 is meant for those who desire ego, while the SHO is meant for those desire functionality. Personally, I won’t pay for ego.

gotta love this, both cars are aussie designs imagine that, australia selling muscle cars to detroit…

on the cars, i like the ford for looks… to me it just seems more refined a little euro maybe? but the pontiac comes with a stick…

ford for the smaller engine with turbo’s is a win for me, my god that pontiac is ugly!!!

well i’d go for the ford between those two, however were the pontiac to look like it’s parent car http://www.holden.com.au/www-holden/action/modeloverview?modelid=4006 i’d have to go with that…

James
Feb 25, 2009 at 10:01 pm

Easy, SHO. Why?

-That powertrain is going to be sick off the line. Remember how fast the GMC Sy/Ty twins were, off the line? AWD + turbo large displacement V6 + torque converter automatic – epic launch. Brake torque to build boost up and lock torque converter, pop off brake and nail it, you are GONE.
-Fuel Mileage. Doesn’t the SHO get like 24 on the highway? Yes please.
-I’m sure you “yay pushrods” types really aren’t aware of the potential a lightly modified SHO will likely have. I say “likely” because this engine has just debuted, but come on. It’s a 3.5L V6 with direct-injection and two Honeywell ball-bearing turbos that spool instantly. Sure, they’re small but these cars aren’t running that much boost stock anyway. Crank them up to 20psi, increasing fueling, maybe a water/methanol setup for detonation resistance, some diverter valves that can hold the boost (cause you KNOW Ford probably cheaped out there…), and maybe downpipes… I would say with basic performance mods like these, mid-400 crank horsepower doesn’t sound unrealistic. Then watch your G8 get spanked on in the quarter by a “grandma taurus.”
Alternatively, if you’re a redneck who thinks 6 cylinders is just not enough by 2, you probably didn’t understand what I just wrote in the first place, so never mind. Drive the G8; I don’t blame you. It is better looking, and the instant torque of the LS3 (not LS7, come on!) won’t be matched by the EcoBoost motor. But I prefer sleeper to flashy, so the Taurus appeals more to me.

Also, the G8 has a cheap, cheap interior. Yuck. The Aussies are still workin’ on that.

I think this showroom showdown is a bit unfair. Your comparing a V8 that produces over 400 hp vs the SHO which produces 360 hp. To make this fair, it would have to be the SHO vs the G8 GT…either way who ever wins this battle on this blog, GM already lost in sales with the G8 which proved to be a failed project.

Feb 25, 2009 at 3:34 pm

This is a no brainer. The G8. I know there are a lot of sho nuts out there, but saying that they hope that the G8 and Pontiac get killed is just wrong. Just because GM makes a car that can kick ass, doesn’t mean you have to wish that the company will die. This next part goes out to the pearson “FordRulesAll”, if your going to compare cars, make sure u take both sides truthfully. And the reason why you dont see people driving Pontiac Muscle as daily drivers, is because they “truely” car for their car. Would anyone out their drive a classic Pontiac around every single day in any weather conditions? I wouldn’t. G8 Gxp all the way.

Although I like the look of the SHO, the G8 has more horsepower, that power going to the correct wheels and the sound of the V8, so I’m going with the G8.

G8 GXP FTW! Why? Sexy sheet metal, manny tranny, and the Taurus looks like a rebadged fusion.

Oh, and pay no attention to a certain someone’s Ford fanboy comment. He didn’t fortify his claim when he said, “The G8 has nothing going for it…” but instead he just left it at that. He cites ‘paddle shifters,’ ‘ecoboost,’ and seeing old ones being used as daily drivers as PROS to his argument?! Fail. Oh, and a “20 year Taurus History.” Well, 1. Let’s take a look at who’s driving them: Chumps, chumps are driving them and 2. Ford found it worthwhile to drop the nameplate for the Five Hundred and in a marketing ploy decided to rebadge that car a Taurus.

G8, but only because I’m a stick shift freak. The minute the Taurus ships with a stick, I’m all about SHO.

Actually a closer race than I thought it’d be! I really like that SHO interior, and since Pontiac might not even be it’s own brand anymore, I think I’d go with the Ford!

the g8 for sure its got more horsepower and you can do some sweet donuts, and it looks about 10x better then the tore-ass

I personally would take the SHO just because I worry Pontiac is going to be folded into the GM shredder and I’ve owned a few SHO’s in the past. But I like the G8 So its a tought decision but I’d say SHO for sure. I’m 100% positive that the G8 will win, everytime something with a blue oval shows up on here they get bashed more than anything else and their build quality has gotten better than GM and Chrysler over the past ten years. H8ers are everywhere.

uhhh the SHO doenst look sporty at all it just looks like a middleaged womans’ grocery getter, i like the looks of the G8 but ive owned a Pontiac before and it broke down on me with 1 1/2 years of owning it so ill take either and trade it in for like the new Challenger

Mmm, that Ford Taurus has almost a Mondeo or Falcon like front-end to it; it’s absolutely stunning! Having a boosted car myself as well a having a buddy of mine with a B5 S4 running RS4 turbos and a bunch of other craziness, I am now quite partial to the forced induction. And yes, the Ford is AWD, but it’s Lincoln MKS chassis it is built off of is a FF platform with a transversely mounted engine and transaxle. The Zeta-based G8 however has the motor sitting the proper way and in the GXP’s case, connected to a proper 6-speed manual transmission. My friend Mike (check out his CarDomain profile via my link) has a G8 GT and to me that car is breathtaking and I’m well aware of the capabilities of GM’s LS motors. Seeing how I 1. loathe automatics and adore manual transmissions and 2. I greatly appreciate the proper layout of a FR car, my vote would have to go to the G8 GXP.

415hp G8 GXP with out a doubt, ford sucks. The Taurus could never compare to it especially not the 2009 GXP G8 Street concept. It freaking has a LSX 7.4L 454 crate engine rated at 634hp. Im sorry but you would have to be a dumb ass to choose the SHO.

G8 GXP. Not only because I currently drive a firebird, but I have to go with the v8 powered RWD sedan that looks like it has as much power under the hood as it does. Nothing against the SHO though, which should still perform quite well in its own right

Ya G8 all the way. It looks a lot better has a v8 and is rear wheel drive whats not to like. And who in the world want to be like I have a Ford Taurus SHO? No one cares its still a Taurus and Taurus are not ever going to be big performance car.

The SHO easily, Pontiac stopped building muscle a long time ago they failed with the GTO and they failed with the G8. The G8 has nothing going for it but the SHO with a roundabout 20 year Taurus history behind it with all the newest technology of a Ecoboost, paddle shifters, special handling package, also have any of you been in a 2010 Taurus, I have they are amazing. I don’t see any Older Pontiac Muscle cars as Daily drivers but I see 16 and 17 year old SHO’s all the time. Let’s not forget gas mileage either a Turbo V6 vs. a GM V8. So let’s let Pontiac and it’s G8 die and give our vote to the car that should win, the Ford Taurus SHO.

NEITHER FOR THAT MUCH MONEY ! The g8 is much nicer but GM is slowly dying and ford is in no need of a bail out( go figure )

I’d have to go with the G8. The new Taurus is a good looking car but the G8 has more of an aggressive appearance, plus the V8 and manual trans. The IP in the Taurus looks like Ford swiped them straight out of the new Impala from the pics I’ve seen.
