Ed Welburn on the Corvette Stingray Concept

A bunch of you guys really liked the Stingray concept that Chevy unveiled at the Chicago auto show, so here’s GM’s design chief talking about the inspiration for the concept. I know that with everything going on at GM, plans for a C7 are a long way off, but I would really love to see the next Corvette look a bit more retro and muscular like this concept.

I like Vettes but not hooked on them. I’m old enough that I grew up right smack in the middle of the Muscle Car era. I always considered being born in 1960 as being born in the perfect year for a car lover. I have a passion for older muscle cars, but I’m pretty progressive when it comes the the newer designs of muscle cars, that’s why I own an old one and a new one. This Stingray? It’s incredible, I know I hear you guys and can appreciate your points of view and opinions, but I got that “I have to have one” feelings that I got when I bought the cars I have now, I think it’s freakin out there man, it’s ready to kill!

i love chevy and of course corvettes but honestly only things i like about this one is the hood, rims, rear split window and the side view, well except for the bumpers in the side view, the front is alright except for the side air scoops in the bumper for the brakes and the back is just all screwed up, i hope that design stays a concept but it would be nice for them to come back out with the Stingray though

Ed I respect you as a designer and you know your shit but this car just doesn’t really look very good to me. Now I am a Ford guy and I’m not a giant fan of the Corvette but I DO like them. The front and rear look wrong but the stance itself is right. Just my 2 cents.
