CarDomain Obscure Muscle Car Parking Lot: The 1957 Rambler Rebel
By Jim Brennan
UDMan
Welcome to the CarDomain Obscure Muscle Car Parking Lot, a regular feature which aims to expand the notion of what a muscle car is, and to have some fun in the process. In 1956, AMC was only two years old, the result of a merger between Nash and Hudson. They were known as a company that produced dependable, if somewhat lackluster cars. However, in the fall of ’56, they stunned the public and the automotive press by introducing a veritable rocket. Say hello to the 1957 Rambler Rebel.

Factories and Dealerships of Historical Los Angeles
By Dan Strohl
Hemmings
I figured while I was poking around the Los Angeles Public Library’s photo archive, I’d sate another obsession of mine and search for old photos of dealerships and auto factories. Didn’t find nearly as many as I did photos of trucks and cars. Photographer Dick Whittington snapped the photo below, described as “the Paul G. Hoffman Co. Inc. Studebaker car dealership on the corner of Figueroa Street and Wilshire Boulevard in 1937, later the site of the Statler Hotel.” Continue reading at Hemmings

TE72 Liftback
By Speedhunters
Car Culture At Large
One of the more overlooked cars in the Toyota Corolla lineage is the TE72 liftback. This car came out in the USA from 1980 to 1983 (technically, it started in 1979.5 and ran a little into 1984) , and was the predecessor to the beloved AE86. This month, we’ve been featuring some pretty cool TE71/AE71 sedans, but I wanted to draw a little more attention to the TE72 liftback/hatchback version. If you look at the three rear windows, the roofline, and front fenders (well, you can’t see the fender detail exactly on this particular car because it has big fiberglass fender flares that have been molded/bondoed onto the original body steel), then you can see that this car has some very similar lines to the AE86 hatchback. I suppose you could say that this is the “father” (or uncle?) of the AE86. Continue reading at Speedhunters

SCCA Trans-Am Action Circa 1970
By Brian Lohnes
BangShift.com
We’ve done the Can-Am thing so we thought we should do the Trans-Am thing in this week’s featured video item. We’re taking you back to SCCA 1970 and some footage from what seems to be an overview of the entire season, a recap if you will.
1970 is usually held as the best year for the Trans-Am series as it is the point when manufacturer spending peaked and most teams were rife with cash and innovative ideas. It also marks the entrance of AMC and its Javelin entry. We have a soft spot for those boys now.
If you are the impatient type, skip right to 1:21 in the video to see and hear the racing fury. If you are not, enjoy a complete walk down memory lane.

Suzuki Makai: Lawn Chairs are Everywhere
Atomicalex
Makai is Hawaiian for “close to the water”, which is exactly what you’ll be with no roof or windows. Check out the webbed seats—if you haven’t sat in an old lawnchair in a while, these will do nicely. The color-matched surfboards are a fun touch. Cool ideas, even if they have no chance of ever seeing production!

VW Jetta TDI Cup Car
Atomicalex
Displaying factory race cars at auto shows never gets old in my opinion, so I was pleased that VW brought this red Jetta TDI Cup car to Chicago. The spec racing series brought VW a ton of good press for its clean diesel efforts. If I had the money and time, I’d have auditioned for it.
