Old vs. New

By Rob Einaudi

Editor-in-Chief

These two Bimmers are parked across the street from our office—I just snapped this pic from my cube. I’ve always loved the 80s 5-series—they just look so tough. As for the newer 3-series… I’m still not so sure. How about you? Which do you prefer? Old or new?

Get A Deal On An Ultra-Rare Bristol

By Jen Dunnaway

Editor

Time is definitely running out on this auction (it’s likely to be over by the time many of you read this), but I’d really like to see someone score this quirky-gorgeous hand-build Bristol 401 for a down-to-earth price. Its original engine has been swapped out for a dual-carbed Ford Falcon six, making it a reliable runner-driver and giving it a non-originality factor that should keep the sellers from demanding a Barrett-Jackson-sized ransom. It’ll be interesting to see if it makes its reserve! Check out a ton more pics on eBay.

Jay Leno on The One That Started It All

By David Clarke

highspeedhijinks

In the grand scheme of things, Jay Leno is probably the luckiest car guy I can think of. He’s used a career in stand-up comedy to finance a collection of over 150 cars and motorcycles, most of which get driven on a regualr basis. All of us here at CarDomain have been bitten by the car bug at some point. While some people’s bugs arrive in the form of a ’69 Camaro, a ’67 Mustang, or in my case a ’70 Buick LeSabre, Jay Leno’s bug bit him in the spring of 1959 in the shape of a 1954 Jaguar XK120. I’ve been fortunate enough that the car that started my addiction still sits in my garage at home, but Jay hadn’t seen his dream car in 49 years. As luck would have it, not only was the car exactly where he last saw it, but the man who owned it then still owns it now–so Jay was able to arrange to see it one more time. So my question to you is this: What car started you on the path to automotive fanaticism… and where is it now? If you want to know more about Jay’s dream car reunion check out the full story over at Motor Trend.

Bob Lutz is Stepping Down

By Rob Einaudi

Editor-in-Chief

Starting April 1 Lutz will move into the role of “Vice Chairman and Senior Advisor,” and he plans to retire at the end of the year. I for one will be very sad to see him leave. I think he did some great things for GM and Detroit. Tom Stephens will replace Lutz as Vice Chairman of Global Product Development. Full press release after the jump.

Mercer-Cobra

By Dan Strohl

Hemmings

Virgil Exner figured heavily into the early Special Interest Autos articles, including at least one pair of stories in back-to-back issues: the Imperial Parade Phaeton story in SIA #38 and the story of the Mercer-Cobra in SIA #39, March-April 1977. Yet another real-life result of the Exner father-and-son team’s Esquire neoclassic sketches (along with the 1966 Duesenberg), the Exners relied on the Copper Development Association to provide the funding, Carroll Shelby to provide the chassis and on Italian coachbuilder Sibona-Basano to provide the body. Photo Gallery: Wednesday at the 2009 NHRA Winternationals

By Brian Lohnes

BangShift.com

Did you know that when an NHRA Nationals event comes to town that you can walk in without a pass on setup day? We did exactly that on Wednesday before the 2009 NHRA Winternationals in Pomona, and got some pictures of teams and cars. It was interesting to see the newest paint schemes and bodies, as well as who wasn’t there. In this gallery, you’ll find pics of WJ’s new K&N paint scheme, Tim Wilkerson’s new Ford body, and the much anticipated Toyotas of AL-Anabi Racing. In addition, there are tech inspection and template photos, some random cool stuff, and a Kodiak we would love to have. Turbo wings rule! See all the photos!

ST205 Celica GT-Four at Nurburgring

By Speedhunters

Car Culture At Large

The ST205 Celica GT-Four is the final evolution in all wheel drive Celica technology. Just like its predecessors, the ST165 (1988-1989), and ST185 (1991-1993), the ST205 is powered by Toyota’s mighty 3SGTE engine, a 2.0 liter turbocharged engine that pushes power to all four wheels. If I’m not mistaken, the last generation of 3SGTE, as found in the ST205, makes 240-250hp.

When I was just out of high school, I remember wanting to own ST185 and ST205 Celica GT-Fours sooooo bad. I had so many magazine clippings with Celicas from Japan; I just couldn’t stop thinking about them. The idea of a turbocharged Yamaha head twincam 3SGTE and all-wheel drive had me convinced. (Until I began autocrossing with my first AE86.)

Imagine my delight when I spotted this ST205 GT-Four in a parking lot right down the road from Nurburgring’s Grand Prix course. Continue reading at Speedhunters

Ranger Rumor: Australia

By Katherine Helmetag

Atomicalex

I was out and about this weekend, and ran into a Ford production guy that I know. Since I know you are all pretty interested in what’s going on with the Ranger, I asked a few loaded questions. New Ranger development is proceeding at Ford’s down under studios. That explains the concept showing in Thailand, and why we’re not hearing much stateside. No word on where the team stands in the process, or when the unveiling will be, but it’s on the way, Ranger fans! Thanks to RangerJutty for the pic.

Got a spare $5,000 plus airfare? Well, then why not head out to the Arctic Circle with the Porsche Travel Club and practice getting sideways in a Carrera 4? That’s what Matthew over at VWVortex did, and he has the story and pics to prove it!
