Fensport AWD Celica

By Speedhunters

Car Culture At Large

This car has seen drag strips, circuits and has even been to Tsukuba to show the Japanese how it’s done in the UK. Fensport became immortal after making a 2.1l turbo 3s-gte powered Corolla that had AWD and was pushing 650bhp. But what do you make after that? Fensport wanted to make another all round car that was capable of winning quarter mile runs and hold its own during Time Attack battles.

They came up with this AWD Celica with another 3s-gte engine but this time it had 576bhp at the hubs. The base car was a generation 7 TRD M-sport Celica that was lighter and stronger. It is a special edition made from the factory that was specifically build for motorsport, it’s even lighter than the older GT4 Celica models. So you could think it was light enough, but knowing Fensport it wasn’t the case. Continue reading at Speedhunters

A Trio of Old Navy 1950 Chevys

By Brian Lohnes

Since the snow has been melting around here in Massachusetts and the glaciers are receding, old cars and trucks are now seeing daylight after being literally buried for months. We saw this neat group of trucks behind a hardware store we had been to a bunch of times this winter and had never noticed them until now.

Here’s the story. If anyone remembers, the Old Navy clothing company had a blue 1950 Chevy truck as its mascot when the first stores opened about 10 years ago. Lots of their clothing had the old blue truck on it and they actually had real trucks in each location, normally one per store. The trucks had no motor or trans in them, but every one we saw was rust free and literally a motor, trans, and driveshaft from being a cruiser.

A couple years back they switched away from the trucks and as such they were all yanked out of their stores. We know of five now in our area counting these three. All five are sitting outside just like these three, which were encased in ice and snow for several months.

We want one bad and wouldn’t even mess with the faux faded blue paint. They seem just killer for a “shop truck” looking cruiser…with a 540.

The History of the Toyota Supra

By Steve Neill

The Toyota Supra. The name is known around the world. From 11 year olds on the playground to 75 year olds living on pension, everyone knows the legend that this car has become. Its unfortunate demise was truly a shock to the automobile world, but here I will summarize everything the car was, and everything it is, in one small article. This is part three of my Japanese supercar series, and this week, we look at the infamous Supra.

An Ode to the Neon

By David Belau

I’m a man and I own a 1998 Plymouth Neon. Guess what? I love it! My Neon has served my family faithfully for five years now. We’re up to 134,xxx miles now with only a few minor problems. It gets between 36-40 miles to the gallon on the highway and has power to spare. Why am I taking the time to write about the Neon? Well, my second child is on the way and we’ve been looking at minivans to replace the Neon. I guess I’m waxing sentimental.

I bought my Neon for $4,000 with 79,000 miles on the clock to replace my 1990 Dodge Daytona with 260,000 miles (yeah, it was worn out).  It’s a 1998 model Plymouth Neon Expresso, gloriously wrapped in Deep Amethyst paint. The DOHC engine pumps out 150 hp through the 5-speed stick shift. My Neon came with almost every option possible, except power windows/locks and a sun roof. It even had a sweet aftermarket stereo system already installed. Here’s a picture of it as I was installing its new wheels.

Glass Roof Mustang at CarDomain Headquarters

By Rob Einaudi

I was trying to figure out why Ford was giving us a 2009 Mustang GT. I mean, I wasn’t complaining—I love these cars. But there wasn’t really anything new for 2009 that I could think of. But then it showed up and I was like, oh yeah, glass roof! The perfect cure for Seattle seasonal affective disorder! Anyway, stay tuned for more on this red pony.

Vintage EV Watch: JMJ Dodge Omni!

By Jen Dunnaway

I’ve always had this silly crush on Dodge Omnis and I’m also totally into EVs, so imagine the love when I ran over to ogle this Omni that I spotted in a Safeway parking lot, only to find that it was a fully electric vehicle. Luckily the owner Bruce and his little daughter Rachel were just finishing up their grocery shopping and offered to drive me around the block. How cool to ride in a vintage EV! Just like in the movies, it runs completely silent except for a bit of tire noise and a futuristic-sounding whirrrr of the traction motor. Being one of the typical 80s EVs, the Omni is packed with several pallets of lead-acid batteries (adding 1000 lbs to the car’s weight, Bruce said–hope it’s running some bigger brakes). It was converted to electric when new by JMJ Electric Corporation–one of the many conversion companies that churned out plug-in electrics in the wake of the last oil crisis (check out my previous blogs on Jet’s Escort and Omni conversions, the ‘Lectric Leopard, and Solargen’s AMCs). Bruce’s Omni is mint, and in the two years he’s owned it, he said it’s never required more than the expected wear-and-tear maintenance–and of course, he hasn’t paid for a drop of gas. Go below the jump for a peek under the hood.
