The Sport Compact Scene and 2009

By Justin VanBlargan

As moviegoers prepare for The Fast And Furious Four to release in April, it’s worth taking a look at how far this so- called youth market has come since its heyday within the past ten years.

For certain it has matured, and it’s not necessary to blow out the candles on Vin Diesel’s 42nd birthday cake as evidence of that. While older Hondas, Nissans and Jettas are still modified by enthusiasts in their teens and early twenties, the market has been blessed with purchases of vehicles whose price tags are associated with slightly older and more established buyers. Car Show Therapy

By Ron Honig

Unless you have been living under a rock for the past week you would have heard of the devastating fires that we have had in my part of the world. They have had a huge impact on the rural Victorian community. One of my friends lost two of his nieces to the fires. People deal with grief in different ways and John decided to come with me to the 2009 All Ford Day in Geelong. I honestly didn’t expect him to see him but as he explained he needed to clear his head, and for him there was no better way of doing that than by going to a car show. We could not have picked a better day, the weather was great and there was a fantastic variety of cars on show. There are more pics after the jump. If you would like to help the victims of the tragedy the Red Cross is taking donations.

Bullrun Season II officially kicks off tonight on SPEED at 10 PM EST. Some people were asking if we were going to do a contest again this year, where members who correctly guess who gets eliminated have a chance to win swag. Well, it sounds like a bunch of you already got a sneak peek at the first episode, so we’re gonna hold off on that contest til next week. But Mr. Angry is gonna try to blog his reaction to each episode on Fridays, so stay definitely tuned for that!

Also, with the help of Andy Duncan and the folks at SPEED, we put together ride pages for all the cars in the show. Well, it turns out that Tony and Teresa already had a ride page on CarDomain for their awesome Solstice, so be sure to check that out as well!

I can kind of undestand how Europe gets the cool cars, but the cool trucks??? What’s up with that? Here’s a look at the new Euro-spec Ranger. More pics at Jalopnik

Following my conversation with J Mays in Detroit, I still think we’ll be getting a new Ranger here soon, too, so stay tuned…

What's Next: New Rules for F1

By Rob Einaudi

Editor-in-Chief

Formula One has made some of the most sweeping rule changes in the sport’s history. In this video from Red Bull Racing, Sebastian Vettel explains how the differences in aerodynamics, tires and technology will help bring down the cost of racing and increase the racing excitement. I’m really looking forward to seeing these changes in action!

Straight-Axle Cars From Lead East 2008

We attended Lead East 2008 this past summer on behalf of a print magazine. They decided to let us use the photos that they are not using in the book here on el blog. This is the first of several galleries that you will see from the event.

We’ve got a major Jones for straight-axle cars and we have never seen such a collection at a car show as we did at Lead East 2008. Here are the best shots we were able to wrest away from the overlords of the print world. There’s some neat junk in here!

Corolla Axio APR GT

By Speedhunters

Car Culture At Large

This Toyota Corolla has been transformed into a full blown Super GT contender. The car was build by APR, who were also responsible for the famous Lightning McQueen MR-S that competed last year in the GT300 class and even won 1 race. For the 2009 season APR thought it would be fitting to start with a completely new car. It was initially unveiled at the Tokyo Auto Salon and slowly a few more details have become available..

Team manager and chief engineer had this to say about his choice for the Corolla Axio; “My team has been using Corolla on the street, and, in spite of having a manual transmission, I often have taken the wheel also. I always thought that the car has everything in a nice package: good balance, maneuverability, drivability, etc. From there, I thought ‘Would we be able to make a racing car out of it?”

As you can see, they definably succeeded in making race car out of the plain looking Corolla. Continue reading at Speedhunters
