By Rob Einaudi

Editor-in-Chief

The German company set to supply the top for the new Camaro convertible has gone under, pushing out the release of the droptop even further. Meanwhile, the 570 hp Z28 has been canceled altogether, owing to budget cuts at GM. Good times! Via Jalopnik

THATS BULL! I WAS LOOKING FORWARD TOO A CLASSIC Z/28 VS. GT500 BATTLE!

Mar 23, 2009 at 5:28 am

ok there is still a V8 the ss with 400+ hp and as for the convertible release it anyway just cuz you can’t make a top for it who cares i’ll park it in the garage and only drive when it’s not raining and yes it would be better with a z28 but were still gonna get a v8 just not as big as what we expected.

Damn well that sucks I would of really liked seeing a 2010 mustang gt500 go up against the 2010 z28 camaro now that would of been nice to see

Mar 22, 2009 at 9:53 pm

Its A Shame. A Real Shame. I was hoping to see a 2010 z28 in the streets. Any Chevy Can Be An SS, But A Camaro Will always be a z28.

chevyman, every car company i know has somebody drivin one of their cars and has of 300,000 on it. even kia! that dont make it a quality car. My dads Members Only jacket would still keep me warm if i wanted to wear it but i would look gay! good luck on the next hundred thou and if you decide you want quality, Jamis makes a REALLY nice bicycle.

chevyman327nova
Mar 22, 2009 at 5:27 pm

you know what why dont all u chevy haters go back to yer gay ass lives and dont even comment on this page cuz it aint meant for u it us meant for Gm fans and as far as quality i have a 92 s-10 with 311,000 miles on the original 2.8 and it just wont die so stop trash talkin the quality of them and show me a 5.0 or an f-series that has that many miles and still purs like a kitten oh and dont i dont put it to test cuz i do!

If it wasn’t for the new design of GMs 07 08 09 SUVs mainly the suburban and the avalance they would have been wiped off the car market after the 96 impla ss cause that was the last car that they made that was worth buying. Chevy is behind 13 years on a nice real sports car with rear wheel drive they should of been dropped the new camro. Its like meeting a fine ass girl and all she does is text you and talk about what she wants to do and how good its going to be but never can find the time to hook up…get the picture?

shuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuure, its coming out real soon >_>

toyotamudbogger
Mar 22, 2009 at 10:54 am

well for everyone that likes the camaro it dosent really matter its never going to come out anyway and by the time it dose GM will be done. FORD on the other hand is coming out with great new cars like the fusion the flex the edge there new f series trucks and also to top it off the 2005-2009 mustangs and the new 2010 mustang. GM is done for.

expo_on_24z
Mar 22, 2009 at 8:45 am

That bitch is ugly as fuck anyway, and they waited waaaaaaaaay too long to bring this car back. Its kinda like a blind date. You hear how beautiful and wonderful and amazing this thing is gonna be and then you finally see it and it aint even that spectacular. Chevy should be the first car company to flop because every thing they touch turns to shit. For example: Impala, Monte Carlo, S-10, Camaro, Malibu, and not to mention they have NEVER had a good diesel work truck. FUCK CHEVY

Damn thats ironic as hell,

I am a S197 owner who works at a GM dealership.

I’m just going to say that GM is promising some major HP numbers. I won’t be surprised if the finalized version didn’t see HP cut backs. To keep everything cost competitive.

I am a fan of both companies, and if you can’t agree that GM has taken the high road. And chose to tell people what they want rather then listen to consumers. Your lying to yourself.

I refuse to believe anything about the new Camaro until I see one on the road

transam66
Mar 22, 2009 at 3:28 am

i’m not surprised why ford has done so much better over the years. The mustang is a car that is affordable and always has been to everyone, and the quality has gotten even better over the years. If the trans-am and camaro weren’t so pricy years back compared to the stang, more people would have bought them and the lines would never have been interrupted in the first place. Kudo’s to ford for a smart fiscal decision. While rice rockets make me sick and I can’t stand them. I will give them credit for a few things. They don’t have defective intake manifold gaskets, they don’t have pre-mature peeling of clearcoat and paint. Something that GM has not dealt with. So i’m not surprised why GM is in such difficulty. If they had lowered their prices and improved on QUALITY years back…more people would have bought their products instead of running to a FORD dealership or a rice factory!

hey retards there still going to have the 425 hp ss so who cares about the z28 for now and to the guy saying an infiniti g37 is a better choice yeah maybe for a retard nothing has has style and swag like the new camaro not even the new challenger

chevyman327nova
Mar 21, 2009 at 3:45 pm

yea it sucks but it could come back later because they did stop makin the camaro and its comin back so maybe one day that package will come back besides i think the ss would be better they aint stoppin that. also even if they do go bankrupt doesnt mean they will just always disappear they would just reevaluate some stuff andimprove on things just to pay there debts off. I dont agree with some things they have done screw themselves up but im a diehard GM guy and if they completely go under i might get a new hobby and say screw cars and sell my tools and all but hopefully things dont go that way cuz its what i live by . (CHEVY ALL THE WAY!)

Mar 21, 2009 at 3:43 pm

DUUUUDEEEE that sucks!!! no Camaro supercar for a while. i guess we will just have to stick with the Beefy SS for a while til they get their act together and put out a 600 HP model Z/28. the 425 HP SS isn’t too bad though. still kick the crap out of the stang. i’m just glad we got the Camaro back on the streets. don’t deny it, its a beautiful car.

AdamShkolny
Mar 21, 2009 at 2:46 pm

THE SS IS NOT CANCELLED. People read it, only the Z/28 is(which is unfortunate). I can’t wait to see some mustang GT’s getting their asses kicked by the V-6. Wish I had the money even for the LS but someday…

Like they say about the Camaro: The V6 will make your jaw drop, the V* will make you change your pants.

THANK GOD – The Convertible Looks Horrible

Mar 21, 2009 at 10:12 am

I personally can’t stand Fords I’ve worked on both and from a mechanic point-of-view GM is easier to work on and doesn’t have the big plastic knobs inside that just feels cheap to me. GM will never go under, the gov’t/military has too much invested in it. I agree a v6 is a waste, so WTF pull it out and drop in a LS1. It should fit since it was planned to have one it anyways, done.

No Big Surprise here at all, I live in Toronto, they make the new Camaro’s at the plant 15 minutes away by freeway from my house. However I do notice in Toronto due to the recession not a lot of people are buying brand new cars anymore.

Well I suppose it’s just more time to reflect on my 50th. Hopefully chevy sticks to sleek muscle rides as the years progress.

hahahahha Bashline- Well said brotha!!! That is soo true, that is why Camaros and Firebirds never took off in the later years..

Mar 21, 2009 at 5:45 am

And thats way GM is broke, they keep making cars that people dont want. If your gonna make the camaro then offer the the trim levels ppl want. WTF is the point of a V6 camaro. I personally have never owned a GM car and i never will just cause of the fact that GM does not think of their costumers, they will throw anything out the door so they can make a quick buck. I will not miss them WHEN they close their doors.

Gm should just go under already. Stop waisting tax dollars to just barley stay in business. This is what happens when you chrage alomost 40 grand for a cheap half plastic car.

Mar 20, 2009 at 5:57 pm

not surprised, but hey..the Infiniti G37 convertible is something to look forward to, at least imports won’t go bankrupt!

Mar 20, 2009 at 5:36 pm

thats stupid. why cut the most popular model of the car. Gm is really cutting its own throat. And im a die hard GM guy. Sad to hear they are having trouble.

74Furyous
Mar 20, 2009 at 5:30 pm

Volume, volume, volume. GM is hurting and if a new model is not going to sell in big enough numbers – it’s pushed back for hopefully better days to come.

Mar 20, 2009 at 4:33 pm

I guess this means that Shelby is still top dog in the hp wars. And I was looking forward to the competition too. Ford and Chrysler are doing great with thier muscle machines, but now there’s no reason for them to up the anty. How hard could it possibly be to transplant the Vette’s motor into a Camaro anyway?? You’d think it’d just drop in.

I didn’t even know they were making a Z/28. I thought it was just going to be base mid and SS models. Oh well, its not like buyers can’t massage that plant a little to make some extra pony.

wsbob
Mar 20, 2009 at 2:08 pm

Damn that sucks. I was hoping to get a convertible around 2012 or so, but if GM is gonna die, then wat am I supposed to do? Sad news about that Z28 too, it woulda been great to see a Z28 and a GT500 go head to head, and if they decided to do a higher level Challenger, but I guess the muscle car war won’t escalate…

Mar 20, 2009 at 1:31 pm

It’s a good thing since the convertible looks horrid.

KrashingV8
Mar 20, 2009 at 12:55 pm

What do you expect from a company about to go under? Its like chrysler bringing out the roadrunner or hemicuda. its not feesable in this era. with people out of jobs, unable to but a car, etc. GM is trying to save money. they cant afford to make anything new with the way their company is headed.

SouthernGuy8503
Mar 20, 2009 at 12:55 pm

a couple of you guys are wrong, there will be 2 SS versions, just no Z28 version, just go to the chevrolet website and build the camaro and you’ll see there will be an SS, don’t believe everything you hear people say, just because it won’t be a Z28 version doesn’t mean there won’t be an SS version either, you’ll have the choices of a regular or SS versions and then can put an RS appreance package on, just go to chevrolet.com and build it then you’ll see, at least Chris Bicknell is right and i know i am to lol

Chris Bicknell
Mar 20, 2009 at 12:26 pm

Come on guys! Look at the Chevy website! There is going to be a V-8 Camaro, just not a Z-28 package.

chevyman327nova
Mar 20, 2009 at 12:20 pm

That really sucks i think they should have stuck with the z-28 and ss because they would make more money because everyone wanting one its damn shame!

Mar 20, 2009 at 12:16 pm

Whats the use of v6 camaro !! , i want a V8 Convertible full of power , well that sucks for GM

Mar 20, 2009 at 12:09 pm

i love th RS headlights, the challenger should of came with cool headlights. maybe one orange angel eye ring as the turn signals and daytime lights

86Iroc-z
Mar 20, 2009 at 12:00 pm

how sad is that a camaro that wont come with a z-28 or ss package wuts the point of buying a camaro then i know i wont buy one.

Mud4x42008
Mar 20, 2009 at 11:44 am

I think this is fake as hell. the camaro will take out any import and will last longer and look good at the same time go camaro.

Chris Bicknell
Mar 20, 2009 at 8:28 am

It’s just sad; I know we need to focus on the future of more fuel efficient cars but come on! Drop a bigger engine and a suspension upgrade and roll it out! I know it’s not that simple but should it really cost $50 million just to make a Z28 when the Camaro is ready to roll? Oh yeah, let’s get an American company to build the convertible tops as well! Come on GM, give us something more to be proud of here! I don’t suppose it’s enough to say that I’d buy one! lol

Brett Powers
Mar 20, 2009 at 8:25 am

Yeah I saw this coming a while back. Opel struggling visibly over European news, talks that the SS and Z/28 would never exist. This is really a rough ride for GM. Ford and Chrysler seem to be more finacially stable. I’ve said it before this year should be quite interesting for the American car market.
