Basketcase Rescue: Robert's Civic Hatch
By Jen Dunnaway
Editor
This basketcase rescue actually involves a whole bunch of cars that otherwise would likely have been junked. Robert started with a 300-dollar Civic that had been run into a fire hydrant. Then he picked up a VTEC and 5-speed for $200 from a friend who’d wrecked his own Honda. Then to fix the mangled front clip, he got forward sheetmetal off yet another Civic that a guy was parting out. Then he picked up a junk Integra for 200 bucks, changed his mind about the Civic’s nose, and is in the midst of swapping over the Integra’s front clip. When Robert’s ride is done, it’s going to be a great example of built-not-bought. Cool project! Don’t forget to check out his page.

People fix up cars for more than just hoping to make a buck off of it when it’s done. Even though I have a Mustang and a Spirit R/T to work on for example, I’m still fixing up my base model Spirit on the side for sentimental reasons. My ’93 was my first car, and I don’t want it to die. I have alot of memories with that car, and I have some crazy plans for later, but right now, I’m reclaiming it from rust.

I agree with Brett Powers, it may be fast, etc when it’s done, but to me it’s a waste of money. It’s an cheap old Civic, not a classic musclecar or anything like that.

Cool project, but in order to set the record straight for the world, it’s VTEC. I wasn’t surprised when a news story about street racing and chop shops spelled it “Vtech” like the plastic computers for toddlers, but I would expect more from a car enthusiast (even a domestics-only enthusiast) considering VTEC has been around since the early Iron Age…
