CarDomain Obscure Muscle Car Parking Lot – The 1956 – 58 Studebaker Golden Hawk
By Jim Brennan
UDMan
Welcome to the CarDomain Obscure Muscle Car Parking Lot, a regular feature which aims to expand the notion of what a muscle car is, and maybe to drop the hint that the muscle car’s roots can be traced back a lot further than the range of years that we generally think of these cars as coming from. It has been over 50 years since the Studebaker Golden Hawk graced America’s highways. Since Studebaker is no longer in business, can we now ask if the Golden Hawk is or is not a muscle car? I think it’s worth taking a look. Introducing the Studebaker Golden Hawk.

Just Walk Away…

There’s a ton of movie tribute cars out there, not to mention the hundreds of KITT’s and General Lee’s floating around. Here’s one movie car I bet you’ve never seen though: the Lord Humongous “Death Chariot.” This 6-wheeled monster is based on an ’84 F-150 chassis, and even though the nitrous bottles strapped to the side aren’t hooked up, I bet it wouldn’t matter once this thing lurched into your rearview mirror. Details are scarce on this wild ride, but maybe if you see it out and about you can ask the two guys strapped to the front. Check out the rest of the gallery over at Jalopnik.

Tucker Convertible Prototype on eBay: Buy It Now for $5 Mil!
By Jen Dunnaway
Editor
No Tucker convertible ever went into production (if you can even call the company’s run of 51 cars “production”), so this is truly a 1 of 1. Looks a bit rough, but I dig the bare metal and yellowed wide whites. I say spraybomb it with some clear and run it!
Its eBay auction ends tonight, so with all the offers on it, we’ll soon be able to get an idea of the more rational prices that folks are willing to pay for such a relic. Since the last time I checked (yes, because I want one), Tuckers were going for about $250K in original condition. So $5 million seems a little out to lunch, especially for a partially-completed resto (the copy emphasizes “the price listed is for the opportunity to buy this one of one prototype vehicle with zero original miles on it when it is completed“). Hmm, I guess we’ll see!
What's Up With These Winter Cars?
By Ryan Porter
IN-N-OUT Editor
Growing up in Washington, it’s not uncommon for a car enthusiast to have a winter car–but I’m beginning to see an unsettling trend. It started with the dirty GT-R that Weston spotted here in Seattle. Next was the winter-rat GT-R spotted in Massachusetts. Well, this Seattlelite has stepped up his game in a major way: how about a Ferrari F430 Scuderia!

Illtech Auto Salon: Pushing the Nissan GT-R Envelope
Weston Henderson
I had the chance to head down to my old stomping grounds yesterday to meet with some of the innovators in the GT-R world, but this story starts a little before yesterday.
A few months back, Ryan and I went to a big GTG up here in Seattle put on as a collaboration between several forums. It was a booming success with several hundred cars. You can read the whole story here if you like, but what took the cake for us were the twin GT-R’s that rolled in sporting Illtech Auto Salon decals and lookin fresh as hell. For the life of me, I couldn’t remember who Illtech was, but knew that I had heard the name before–it turns out that these guys are leading the industry in GT-R tuning. With 3 GT-R’s in their stable and a boatload of connections, these fellas are pushing the envelope in tuning the GT-R and other supercars to boot. Read on…

Ghosts

My 75-dollar Concord is a true little old lady car; it belonged to a woman who was married to an AMC dealer, and she drove it until she passed away in February 2007. I’ve learned a few things about that little old lady in the time I’ve owned the car. She was trained as a mechanic (probably in the service) and she did her own maintenance. She disconnected the A/C compressor to improve the Concord’s fuel mileage. And that car clearly meant something to her–I’ve found evidence that she waxed it religiously, even the door jambs.
The other day I was clearing out my Concord’s glove box for the first time since I’ve owned it (lazy, I know–for some reason I detail-cleaned the entire interior and dash before I thought to tackle the glove box)–and I found a startling thing. Neatly folded up to about the size of a cocktail napkin, it was one of those retro clear-vinyl lace-up bonnets that little old ladies wear when it rains to protect their styled hair. The trim was pink ribbon. It’s exactly the kind of ordinary thing an elderly lady would keep in her glove box, but for some reason, it struck a chord. I’ve already come to feel that the car, which I got for next to nothing, is somehow entrusted to me–that I owe a certain psychic debt to this little old lady, whom I of course never met, and who cared so meticulously for this car for its entire life so that I might someday receive it in the mint condition it’s in. I owe her, and I totally believe that whatever else I might keep in the glove box, the vinyl rain bonnet gets to stay. I realize that any ride you get second-hand is going to come with its share of ghosts, and that people have found some weird stuff in the cars they buy. At risk of sounding morbid–how about you? What ghosts did your car come with?
2010 MAZDASPEED3 vs. Subaru WRX: Which Would You Choose?
By Rob Einaudi
Editor-in-Chief
You’ll notice I didn’t put a year in front of the WRX—that’s because I can’t find anything on the 2010 car. I assume it won’t be a whole lot different from the 2009 WRX. But the MAZDASPEED3 is all new for 2010. The Mazda’s turbo 2.3 liter inline four is said to produce 256 hp, while the Subie’s turbo 2.5 liter boxer four should make at least 265 hp. The Subie is AWD and comes with a 5 speed, while the Mazda is FWD and comes with a 6 speed. Both cars weigh around 3,150 pounds and are priced pretty close to the $25k mark. Which would you choose?
Great Parking Job

Speaking of the Motherland, check out this awesome curbside mishap in Russia. The cool thing is how almost completely unscathed the VW is. If I had this cool a story to tell about how I got one of my parking dings, I’d probably leave it unrepaired. Follow the jump to check out the damage.
