Caption Contest: This Weeks Winner!

By Rob Einaudi

Editor-in-Chief

Man, I almost forgot to pick a caption contest winner today. People really went nuts for this one. We sent it around the office and after some debate we’re going with armada8800’s “That little car was filled with clowns…… 32 people died in this accident.” Stay tuned for another caption contest tomorrow!

Teslas Invade Seattle

By Rob Einaudi

Editor-in-Chief

We spotted two Teslas in Seattle yesterday. This red one was parked within a block of CarDomain Headquarters. And I saw a blue one on the way home last night but wasn’t able to get the camera out in time. Good to see these cars doing daily driver duty!

Nitrous Kills a Motor in a Spectacular Display of Automotive Irresponsibility. We Approve.

By Brian Lohnes

BANGshift.com

Over the years there have been a couple well documented magazine stories about taking a wheezer junk motor and pumping it full of so much nitrous it blows its guts out giving it maximum effort. Most of those stories end with the motor making a harmless bang. Not this time. The print guys pale in any comparison to the action in this video.

Watch and see a straight six come apart in truly glorious fashion when pumped with God knows how much squeeze during a dyno shop’s Christmas party. Beware, some of the language at the end is not safe for work, so turn it down after the rods stop spewing from the oil pan. Yes, you read that right.

Here’s Part 1. You can watch Part 2 after the jump.

GDB Impreza STi

By Ben Schaffer

Bulletproof Automotive

This car was a car I was involved with for a client Eric. The build was done back in early 2005 and at the time it was one of my favorite project cars I got to be involved with. This car was one of the first big builds I was fortunate enough to be asked to be a part of. I’m guessing you can easily see my influence in the setup of the car. Doing cars like this gave me confidence to do my S2000 years later and started getting Bulletproof known for not just selling parts but for consulting and for building complete cars.

Chrysler Files Chapter 11, Will Partner With Fiat

By Katherine Helmetag

atomicalex

I am old enough to remember when Chrysler paid back their government loans. Today, they won’t get the chance to do it again. This is a sad day. Not sure what will happen here—no doubt Jeep will be saved by FIAT, but the rest of the rest of the platforms have less going for them. Local Chrysler workers are angry—with the UAW and CAW meeting demands in talks, it’s looking like Chrysler staff are going shoulder the pain here. You know, I don’t know which “end” is less dignified—the abandonment of Pontiac, or the financial destruction of Chrysler.  But on a positive note, it is nice to see the government put the auto industry’s needs above the banking industry for once.

Goodnight, Pontiac

By Dan Strohl

Hemmings

By now, you’ve all heard the news of Pontiac’s death sentence, made official earlier this week. We’ve seen plenty of tributes to the best and worst Pontiacs, and all sorts of dining-room-table historians come out of the woodwork to explain the marque’s downfall. Instead, we thought the most appropriate words to say weren’t words at all, but this December 1961 nighttime photograph of Paper City Motor Sales, a Pontiac-Cadillac dealership located in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Car Culture at Large

A nice look back at the days of wheels no larger than 15 or 16 inches and horsepower numbers no higher than 200. Look closely and you’ll even see a guy out there with a brand new R33 Skyline.

Stories, Battle Scars and Smiles

By Mike Musto

AKA: Mr. Angry

We all love them, don’t we? Their engines, wheels, imperfections. Our cars speak volumes about who we are, what we do and how we like to be perceived. They tell stories about our personalities and through their lives may even pick up some battle scars. They get us from point A to point B and everywhere in between. They are, in a sense, our teleportation device from the every day.

CarDomain Obscure Muscle Car Parking Lot: the 1965 Chrysler 300 L

By Jim Brennan

aka UDMan

Welcome to the CarDomain Obscure Muscle Car Parking Lot, a regular feature which aims to expand the notion of what a muscle car is, and to generate some intellectual commentary in the process. The 1965 Chrysler 300-L is accepted by some aficionados of the letter car, but rejected by others. Some say the 300-L is not a “real” letter car because Chrysler strayed away from the original concept of the 300, while others argue that it maintained the image. Let’s take a look at Chrysler’s last real 300 letter series special, the Chrysler 300-L.

Are You an Underdog?

By Alex Vickers

Katakuna

Are you the underdog in the CarDomain community, or the enthusiast community in general? Do people look at your car and automatically say “what a piece of junk”? Saturns get a really bad rep these days, and my Saturn is no exception. You see, all I drive is a borrowed Saturn SL2. Although I absolutely love Saturns, very few of you out there seem to like them. I see people in traffic sneer at me just because I drive this thing and actually enjoy it.

Cool Junk In The Desert

By Jen Dunnaway

Editor-at-Large

Patrick Dempsey (no relation to the actor) spends his time cruising the California-Nevada desert on his dirt bike, photographing piles of abandoned junk he finds off backroads and around abandoned mines. The pictures are pretty cool, though Dempsey has become convinced that the often burned and bullet-riddled hulks he finds–along with similarly-dilapidated mattresses, toilets, washing machines, and other detritus–are in fact the sacred offerings of a clandestine American Indian religion. More junk below the jump, and check out the full image series and accompanying weird essay here.

Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 vs. Ford F-150 SVT Raptor

By Rob Einaudi

Editor-in-Chief

Last week I was trying to figure out what to pit against the new Raptor. Seemed like there was nothing out there that really compared. Then I remembered that a month ago I was trying to figure out what to pit against the Grand Cherokee SRT8. Nothing seemed to compare to the burly Jeep, either. Well, now, let’s see… The Raptor starts at $38k and comes with a 5.4 liter V8 which puts out 320 hp and 390 lb.-ft. of torque (sadly, the 6.2 liter V8 won’t be available in the Raptor until the winter of 2010). The SRT8 starts at $43k and comes with a 6.1 liter Hemi that puts out 420 hp and 420 390 lb.-ft. of torque. Both are awesome vehicles that will scare your neighbors. Which would you choose?
