Fast & Furious Opening Night Cancelled in California Amidst Fears of Increased Street Racing Activity

By Jen Dunnaway

California residents who were hoping to check out opening night of Fast & Furious this Friday have been cruelly thwarted. An emergency resolution passed late yesterday has banned the film from California theaters until further notice, following a pair of street-racing-related deaths in So Cal this week. More…

Advocates of the ban have claimed that a spike in street racing activity will certainly result from the opening of the movie, as “youngsters” with nitrous on the brain take to the streets to imitate the moves they’ve seen on screen. The surge in illegal racing could last all summer, claims Bill Thompson from Stop Street Racing, as aspiring racers obtain performance parts and hop up their rides after being inspired by the latest installment in The Fast and the Furious series. “Given the problems we’ve had here,” Thompson said, “in our best-case scenario, these movies wouldn’t be shown at all.” Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger was surprisingly supportive of the measure, despite being himself the star of films criticized for their alleged promotion of violent activities. “The street-racing problem is out of control,” the Governator was quoted as saying. “It is unfortunate that it has come to this, but we will do what we must to keep our roads and our children safe.”

In coming days, lawmakers will wrangle over the duration of the film’s postponement, and theaters will be faced with the complicated task of refunding or crediting those who purchased advance tickets. Meanwhile, Californians who are set on seeing the flick this Friday will just have to (ahem) drive really, really fast to Arizona.

I love the fast and furious series. I hope this ban isnt true and its an incorrect source; however, the release of the movie brings up another good point. Street Racing is a world wide problem. It seems in every major publication another accident occurs do to young kids racing in the streets. Its becoming too much and we need a world wide option to street racing. The only option i have been able to find thus far is through an ogranization based in the States called Evo Street Racers (Http://www.EvoStreetRacers.com) Not only did the website have a lot of content on american street racing but also worldwide street racing. They also have so pretty creative ideas and plans to take racing off the street. I think the evo street racers website helps put into context the fast and furious movies.

Banning one of the most popular films in California? Sucks for the residents out there. Good thing Florida doesnt have laws like California, Or this state would suck. My friends and I already bought tickets for opening night and we are going to a night viewing. Plus there’s gonna be street racing all over the place. I-27, I-95, Parking lots, Straight roads and ETC. It’s gonna be crazy out here tonight – “CANT WAIT”

Ohhh so so cruel, you almost got me. April Fools for sure, we got our tickets. There is no way the theaters are willing to lose that much money on opening day considering the car culture in California. But if not Nevada here I come!!!

Hmmm…California has tons of murders due to gun violence. Why not ban violent movies? Illinois > California

If the parents bought their kids beaters instead of fast cars this wouldnt be a problem blame the parents not the kids.

A movie does not promote street racing, its parents who buy their kids brand new sports cars and say have at it

Maybe California should encourage kids to race legally. Give ‘em a track and let ‘em have at it. I look at it kinda like the “we need a ballpark so kids quit breaking windows” scenario. I know if I had easy access to a track, I wouldn’t have taken to street racing as a teen.

I also call you out Jen. However, I do think that some preventative measures should be taken around this movie. This would not be an attack on car culture, it would be a way to curb completely useless idiocy.

Is this first amendment territory? What’s next? They going to put a ban on repair manuals that teach kids how to replace stock parts with aftermarket?
