NYIAS: SMS 570 Challenger
By Mike Musto
RideLust.com
After driving Dodge’s new Challenger R/T and SRT, I came away with a warm fuzzy feeling that made me want to buy one. Now it seems that Steve Saleen, creator of the amazing Saleen S7 wants to up the ante by trying to improve on what Chrysler has created, with the creation of the SMS 570 Challenger. Continue reading after the jump.

75 more horsepower, 6-piston calipers and a dual induction hood make up the majority of the tweaks. The rest is mainly cosmetic with a new a grill, rear tail section, upgraded interior (I actually like the standard SRT interior better) and a nifty little gauge pod on top of the dash.

I am sure the SMS is a great car and does everything a bit better than the standard Challenger SRT, but the big question is, is there really a market for this thing? Will people want to shell out the sheckles to pay for marginal performance upgrades? Honestly, I don’t think so. What are your thoughts?

Sorry to the Dodge fanatics here, but the “New” HEMI is not a Hemi at all. In fact, if you talk to any Dodge mechanic (like my close friend), the motor more resembles a Wedge than a Hemi.
No need to insult back and forth on this topic though, every motor has potential.

looks good, needs a few changes though. More power, exhaust looks stupid, needs different wheels. Besides that its good, and no one cares what Evo pwnage has to say, no one cares what your rice burning ass has to say. Have fun driving your piece of shit that has no muscle.

I’m with everyone calling for a manual. And seriously, most the people on this site have added more than 75 hp to their rides and for much less than I expect this to cost. It looks great, but I’m disappointed.

I think it’s great that the Challenger and Camaro are back. And I will give Dodge credit for appealing to the Challenger loyal with this body style even if it is a little big and heavy. Unfortunately, the interior needs a lot of help – and yes I understand it’s a muscle car and who cares, but if the retro was done quite well outside, why not complete the package inside?

Love the colour, love the hood. Needs amanual though. The ground effects look like an afterthought. Now how about a spoiler about roof height?

Well, it definitely looks good, but a few questions definitely pop up! First of all, are those the wheels Saleen chose? Usually, Saleen Mustangs are fitted with specialty wheels, but these look like the standard ones from Dodge. Second, is the suspension at all tweaked? What’s the point of upgrading anything if you’re not going to modify the suspension. With 75 hp and mostly cosmetic upgrades, I’d say it probably won’t be worth it! Although it definitely looks good, I think someone with a little elbow grease can make a similar or better-looking-unique Challenger with their own personal touch and of course, more power, for less money.

Hemis produce the power that they do because of the shape of their combustion chambers, and how does it limit the compression ratio? The race Hemis are pushing 18:1. That’s not really practical for street use, so I don’t think they’re too limited in the performance department. You’re probably in a bad mood because you just got blown away by a mopar, so you insult every one that shows up in the blog.

That car is a beast! Saleen did a great job and if you own a Challenger you would know it is made for an AUTOMATIC! Just mash on the gas and laugh at the car that used to be next to you!

Thats badass, it should have been fitted with a 6 speed though

Great looking car. But why AUTO?? and why Hemi?!? Hemi’s can’t produce the compression ratios of say an LSX because of the Hemispherical heads, hence the lack of performance capabilities.

Looks sick, the only thing I would want is manual not auto.

Damn, That’s more Muscle than what I drive. He pimped that thing out from top to bottom. One question though, Why is the Challenger parked right next to an Aston Marton booth?

You could do aftermarket upgrades yourself that would cost less than this thing. I don’t see a market except for people who don’t know their ass from a bolt-on accessory.

Took a great muscle car and made it even better. Awesome!!!

Well it appears ol Steve has branched out a little bit since he sold Saleen. I think this may be a “getting his feet wet” kinda thing. He started with the Mustang, and the mods were mainly suspension, he starts out slow at first, then ramps up. I hope that this is the same scenario.

The MSRP’s for the 2009 SMS 570 Challenger and SMS 570X Challenger are targeted to
start at $64,870 to $84,970 respectively with production commencing in 2008. Both models
will carry a bumper-to-bumper factory warranty.

The only thing I like about this is the color! Horrible design and styling.

Love the color. As for the rest, I’m not impressed at all. The body mods look tacky. They kept the same stock rims, but added a tiny bit of paint. The rear end looks goofy too. Personally, I just want an R/T in that plum crazy purple and a flat black hood…

I think that bad boy needs a twin turbo set-up. For the most part the the exterior upgrades are pretty nice. It seems to be a good combination of both companys heritage without being to overstated. Not it just needs more power. It would be cool if eventually Saleen offered the same kinds of parts for the Challenger they have for the mustangs and fords for years.

I think the 700hp might be a little more appropriate and interesting. I’m disappointed with a few things as well, little things like the tailpipes, I thought the interior would be better too. So how much does this bad boy cost anyways?
A few things this one needs are side dump exhaust, black gauges along with the rest of the interior, and of course…MORE POWER!

Looks good, especially in plum crazy purple!
