Hot: Gucci-Edition Hornet Interior!

By Jen Dunnaway

If you think that high-end designer trim packages on limited-edition vehicles is some new thing, you’re dead wrong. Back in the day, AMC was all over that, and personally I think they made it a little less boring than the current offerings (like Hyundai’s yawn-worthy Prada edition Genesis sedan. I mean really, what’s so Prada about it? Woo, it’s got leather seats–big deal). At the Tom Mack AMC auction this weekend at Lowe’s Motor Speedway, Rich Truesdell spotted this heavy-on-the-green 1973 Gucci edition Hornet Sportabout. Rich thought it was hideous, but I like ugly things–and I totally want this! Come on, how often do you see a car with emerald green carpeting? I’d make this my Fremont car in a second. More details and pics at Automotive Traveler.

It’s hideous but I’ve owned one 10 years ago. Paid $550 for it, had it for 5 years, drove it 25,000 miles, sold it, if I recall correctly, for $1,500. It had a 304 V8 and with the overall light weight, was something of a screamer. It was green just like the car I saw in NC; I think that in silver or black, two of the four available colors, it would look so much better.

Click on the link in Jen’s blog to see more shots of the car as well as many other unique AMCs I snapped last weekend in NC.

This is why I for the most part like older vehicles. Newer cars have gotten (with the exception of Mopar and the occasional Ford) too blan with color schemes. I wanna see the Hemi Oranges, the bright Limes, and yes even the hidious Grabber Greens and the browns the world has too offer. Automakers need to ease up on the silver and white and consumers need to venture out a little more. I would definitely take this AMC if I could.
