Wheels Make the Car
By David Clarke
highspeedhijinks
Wheels allow cars to go from a glorified boat anchor to viable transportation. That’s really more of a literal definition, though. A wheel to me signifies a whole lot more than that. It’s my honest belief that wheels make the car. Take my Caprice as an example, or Jen’s Concord. Here are cars that are seemingly just transportation for the gray haired community (two-tone brown paint and vinyl tops don’t help much), yet when you change the wheels you change their stance, their look, and ultimately the personality of the car. What one other mod can do all that ? Today, with advancements in C & C machines, and with tire companies looking to develop the next hot product, you and your car now have more options than ever before. Pick the right design with the right color, twist some lugs, and you can transform any car from Not to Hot. I like my Dayton knock offs on my Caprice, but if I had some more cash I’d definitely spring fro some gunmetal gray Foose Nitrous wheels. If money was no object, what wheel would you slap on your ride ?

Peugeot wheels on my old subaru. I could not possibly think of a better fit. instant bmw for an old subes appearance, with an inch here or there to spare…full suspension. I have had the nice wheels,on common cars, and its not real engineering. I went as far as seeing on bounce by my drivers side window as I dragged to a shiny 3 chrome wheeled stop. Ridiculous. A more modern story is the nationally known charger driven by mr.angry, and those ridiculous wheels breaking…

So many rims…so little time. I do like the 22″ custom Foose 5 star Black rims tho.

LOL. DaveyBoyo. You have alot of nerve to diss on Davids Caprice. I’d drive his car 10/10 times over the pieces of crap I saw on your page. lol Namely that v6 silverado pushing a ground thumping 200 hp. If you don’t like it, thats one thing. But to put someone down for it is another. And you wonder why your rides get 3 stars and under. LOL Laughable!

Well, I already put chrome 14″ Magnum 500s on the ’68 Fury, but if money was no object I think I’d go with a brand-new set from Coker.
Setting aside the issue of tires for a moment, I think going up to a 15″ on the ’68 would be OK–wouldn’t be out of proportion and it’d give room for a front-disc conversion later.
Now, the ’68 is a 318 car. The ’67 Fury, on the other hand, packs a 383. For that, I think I’d go with 15″ or maybe 16″ Torque-Thrust wheels with black or gray spokes and brushed rims.
For my Stratus, which currently runs 14″ steelies with plastic generic wheel covers, I’d go to a 15″ alloy wheel–the stock Stratus ES wheels would be fine with me. The 16″ painted alloys offered on the ’01-’06 Stratus SXT would look good, too, provided there wasn’t a steering-clearance issue with proper tires–”proper tires” being ones with a decent sidewall, since I don’t care for the rubber-band look.

If I had the cash, I’d swap out the rotors on my Saturn with ones from a Camaro and slap on some torque-thrusts. Now that’ll be an original mod to one of these cars.

The hoopdie wheels on your Caprice make it look like a piece of shit. It looks like you’re just some dumb kid off the street who thought he was cool because he threw big shiny rims on his land yacht.

true, wheels can make or break a car. but even if money was no object, i’d stick with the current ones, i selected them carefully and think they’re just perfect for my ride.

Ill be honest, I love my stock rims. They are clean and shiny, and dont take away from the car. Also, they are just the right size. Plus, the fin shaped slots pull cold air from the outside into the wheel to cool the brakes. Cannot beat that!
If I had to get another 4 rims, I would get the chrome ZO6 rims that are for sale in ecklers’ catalog. They would be a nice addition.
