Pontiac is Dead
By Rob Einaudi
Editor-in-Chief
Or anyway, that’s what Edmunds is reporting today. According to inside sources, GM will make the announcement on Monday. Sounds like the whole “niche brand” idea has gone out the window.

They should have kept the brand, did away with all the copied vehicles such has the Pontiac G5, Vibe and just stick with strictly performance vehicles. You cannot cater to everyones taste so stick with what you know which is the GTO. I would have kept the vehicle as Dodge did with the Challenger with the modern old style look. Pontiac needs to stick with the GT0 re-modeled, Firebird and maybe just maybe the G8/Holden/VXR8.

This also makes me especially sad because there is a dealership nearby that says “Oldsmobile-Buick-Pontiac”. 2/3′s of the brands will be gone… it’s a sin.

Buick is the number one selling car in China. That is why they’re trying to axe Pontiac and not Buick.
I know it may sound stupid, and trust me, I think it is too, but when you have a 1 BILLION + market segment and you’re the number one seller, you’re going to keep selling.
Rumor has it that China, as a country, is going to buy GM. If that happens, I will never buy new GM EVER.

don’t some people realize GM isn’t the only one that rebadges? hell all the american companies have been doing it since the muscle car era if not earlier, in the muscle car era they might have put on different front ends and rear but evything else was the same, also ford rebadges to not just GM, what you think any mercury is, theyr’e fords, any lincoln is just a ford also, any plymouth is a dodge, so i don’t know why people are acting like GM is the only one that rebadges and makes it seem like its never been done until recently
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
but anyways, the reason they’re probably getting rid of pontiac is because for one thats a whole brand they don’t have to deal with, also they looked at what brands sell and the pontiac is probably the one that sold the least, not all the years combine, just probably the last 4 or 5 years, think about it, even though they rebadge like other companies, thats still whole vehicles they have to build so it don’t matter if they rebadge like the others do, they still got to pay for and build the vehicles

I dont really see how it will save them very much $$. I mean look at some of thier cars next to the chevys .. the only thing that is different is the emblems that are on the cars. Provided there are things like the GTO and what not, but come on.. I dought dropping it will pull them out of the billions of obama dollars they are swimming in.

The rest of GM will shortly follow, leaving room for so-so Ford and POS Chrysler products. Long live the Pontiac cars that are currently on the road.

Can’t kill buick all the old people who actually have money bye them. Chevrolet already has body panels for the G8 in Europe I believe its a lumina over there. G5=Cobalt G6= malibu but the G6 is better looking and has more variations. g3= aveo = CRAP!!!!! I hate it just like every one else but GM needs to Bump Up Quality and quite rebadging one thing a million times. I own two gm products and the older one i believe is a higher quality as it has over 150,000 miles and still runs strong and has a lot of original parts. My newer car i’m slowly replacing part by part!

LOL @ David Clarke…Dude, Pontiac isn’t the brand that has the most potential to keep people interested in American cars. Believe it or not, it’s Chevrolet, Ford, and Dodge. Pontiac did do several things right…The TA, G8, GTO, and Solstice. I just hope something like the G8 will be available by the time I pay off my truck in 3 years, lol.

Buick? naw, kill of saturn…what have they ever really been good for. The reason they’re keeping buick is because they have a huge developing market in china. Saturn has never really put out any over the top vehichles except maybe the Sky, why are they still around?

I agree why not kill Buick and save whatever they pay Tiger for his endorsements. But remember when Chrysler killed Plymouth and took ownership of the Prowler and I think the PT Cruiser as well? I can just see it now, introducing the Chevy…Firebird. Or how about the all new G8 Impala(working title).

I was saving up for a new FireBird….maybe GMC will pick up the Firebird name plate…or Chevy even. I smell Chevys doom next.

If they do die monday it will suck! I was really wishing for a Firebird comeback! guess that’s not going to happen.

I never buy new cars, and set a limit of 15 years of age for used cars I buy… so Pontiac will die in 15 years. I have yet to enjoy the very last of the Firebird, maybe a GTO or GTX or both.

I have a lot to look forward to still from Pontiac so…

Well, Pontiac will be in good company, with Oldsmobile et al. Don’t know why they’re killing Pontiac and not Buick. I can’t even picture a current model of Buick…
I guess we’re not gonna get a Firebird.

I dont think there will be major job losses…yet. All pontiacs, with the exeption of the G8, are built in the same factories where Chevys Buicks and Caddilacs are made. So I dont think there will be major lay offs untill GM officialy dies

So is this going to happen after GM’s 13 plant 9-11 week shut down because of over production?

This sucks. I do think that pontiac made too many cars that were just copies of chevys but they are still putting out some good cars like G8. I do like M45lover’s idea of using G8 chassis in an Impala but its sad that all of those people will lose their jobs

Sweet maybe now they can sell the Pontiac G8 GT as the new Chevy Impala SS!!! That would be sick, restore the impala to the crown.
Just put on some new sheet metal on the outside and were good to go, I’d buy one.

These days they where only good for the G8 GTP and the Solstice. they should have knocked off all the other pontiac models as they were just chevy clones. I think they could actually keep the brands. They just need to kill off the copys and have each brand sell their own DIFFERENT models.

I agree with ArmoredHaulin, this is just stupid. Pontiac was the only one I would actually buy from. GM is a doomed company, I forsee an Epic Fail poster in their future.

If it is true that sucks, talk about a slap in the face with reality. I’d have to say Pontiac was my favorite GM Brand.
