Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 vs. Ford F-150 SVT Raptor

By Rob Einaudi

Editor-in-Chief

Last week I was trying to figure out what to pit against the new Raptor. Seemed like there was nothing out there that really compared. Then I remembered that a month ago I was trying to figure out what to pit against the Grand Cherokee SRT8. Nothing seemed to compare to the burly Jeep, either. Well, now, let’s see… The Raptor starts at $38k and comes with a 5.4 liter V8 which puts out 320 hp and 390 lb.-ft. of torque (sadly, the 6.2 liter V8 won’t be available in the Raptor until the winter of 2010). The SRT8 starts at $43k and comes with a 6.1 liter Hemi that puts out 420 hp and 420 390 lb.-ft. of torque. Both are awesome vehicles that will scare your neighbors. Which would you choose?

Twitch8686, and at the end of the day, it’s still a truck so who cares? Trucks are cool when they are Baja racing like the Paris to Dakar, they are cool when you are throwing crap in the back of ‘em and not caring about scratching anything, they are cool when you take it on the beach to unload your toys without having to drag ‘em across yourself, they are cool when your discovering new dirt trails out in the middle of nowhere! Sport “trucks” are an asinine invention as there already exists, and has been for some time, a better alternative to a sports truck… a sports car! Just as trucks can do better truck-like things then cars, cars can do better car-like things then trucks, how ’bout that?! Let Jeep keep their ridiculous “claim to fame.” I’ll always look at SRT-8 Grand Cherokees and SRT-10 Dodge Rams as, “I shoulda’ bought a ‘Vette!” All in all, with that money, a nice sports car & a cheap, careless pickup is a WAYY better alternative than having just a truck trying to do both because then it just winds up doing everything OK but nothing great.

Funny before I bought my Grand Cherokee SRT-8 I owned a C-5 Corvette. Guess what the SRT is faster in the 1/4 mile, faster around the road course at Gingermann and the Autobahn in Joliet. My wife can Drive it all winter with no worries, and I can bring along my daughter because it has a back seat. It also works well going to Soccer practice LOL. The ONLY place the Vette was better was MPG, but I have a company Gas card so that is no big deal to me.

in response the dodge challenger srt is alot faster than the Jeep srt, they have the same size engine but the challenger is alot lighter in comparison

The best ET for a stock Challenger that I’ve seen is a SRT-8 auto that ran a 13.110 @ 108MPH. There are quite a few bone stock Grand Cherokee SRT-8 in the 12s. The launch with the Grand Cherokee and its 3.73 gears/AWD/Agressive Torque converter make it quicker in the 1/4 than the LX SRTs with their 3.08 gears. Jeeps Typically trap around 104 MPH, as the drag of the drivetrain and aerodynamics take their effect at the top end. + the Jeep can run those numbers more consistently with the AWD Launch.

The Jeep SRT-8 is the worlds fastest production line suv to date no crappy ford or chevy is ever going to take that from Jeep. Jeep has held that title since 1998 with the grand cherokee limted and was the worlds fastest suv then. It housed a Magnum 5.9 L V8 engine with an output of 245 hp and 345 lb·ft of torque, going from zero to 60 mph in only 6.8 seconds. Now for the the SRT-8 Grand cherokee a 0 to 60 time of 4.6 seconds and a quarter mile time of 13.0 seconds at 104.1 miles per hour. These numbers made the SRT-8 Grand Cherokee the fastest accelerating vehicle within the SRT-8 lineup, second to the dodge viper SRT-10. The top speed of the SRT-8 Grand cherokee is 170mph with no rev limter. Im voting for the Jeep SRT-8 all the way.

Ford does not make anything that compares to the SRT-8 Grand Cherokee, Chevy does with the Trailblazer SS, that would be a better comparo. The Dodge PowerWagon is not in the same league either, with its gearing, lockers, and disconnecting sway bars, its more of a Mountain goat, the a fire road flyer. My take on it?

Well I already own a Grand Cherokee SRT-8, so that is a given. But The Raptor is gonna be badd azz when it hits the showrooms. I’ll probably pick one up when the 6.2 comes out, to add to my stable.

B.T.W. Is anyone here aware of the fact that the Grand Cherokee SRT-8 is the second fastest SRT vehicle around the handling course at Chrysler’s proving grounds in Chealsea Mi? Only the Viper is faster. The Grand is faster than the SRT-8 LX cars (300, Charger, Magnum, and Challenger) and the Caliber SRT-4. What is really amazing is it is faster than the Crossfire SRT-6!!

For the nay-sayers, I too did not believe, until my first open track day at the Autbahn CC in Joliet. It was pretty cool passing a Honda S2K in the corners in my Soccer mom SUV

100% The raptor I would mess up the roads with it :D anyone say burnout marks down the street?

cbeech316
May 1, 2009 at 9:22 am

C’mon the obvious choice is the Raptor,at least I think so, it is just more useful all around then the Jeep being a pick-up.Its a new design that I believe will go over very well, and the Jeep, well it just looks like another Jeep Cherokee, sorry to say. That Hemi would be nice to fly down the pavement with but thats about it, because if it were mine and I paid that kind of price for it, I’d be scared of goin off-road. Of course simply with a lift and some bigger wheels it would be trail worthy as well, but then you would lose some of the kick that you would feel using it on the street. The sweet thing about the Raptor is its ready for on or off-road at all times. And when this Ford comes out with the new 6.2 V8 next year, I think it would be interesting for CARDOMAIN.COM to post this exact poll again, props to the crew at CARDOMAIN.COM for this poll, GOOD JOB!!!

hmmm… the jeep thats is better than the ford onroad… or a ford that is better than the jeep offroad… these are akward times. right now i would prolly choose the srt-8 but when the new 6.2l v8 comes out for the raptor prolly the raptor. it might even be faster than the srt-8 when it does. It will have a little more torque and a little less hp.

That really depends on what your getting either one for, the Jeeps a better family vehicle with loads of power, the Ford on the other hand is one beast of a trail rig, since I already have an SUV I’d go Ford, congrats to the design team it looks awesome!

EVEN THOUGH THE SRT8 GRAND CHEROKEE IS THE BEST THING FROM JEEP EVER MADE, THERE IS NO COMPETITION WHAT-SO-EVER WITH THE RAPTOR. FORD IS THE NEW HEARTBEAT OF AMERICA AND WITH THE MUSTANG, FUSION, EXPEDITION, F-SERIES, SUPER DUTY, (AND IN THE NEAR FUTURE), TAURUS SHO, THEY WILL CONTINUE TO THRIVE. ANYONE WHO DOESN’T AGREE CAN KMA. PEACE

i’m not a big fan of Fords but i’d take the raptor cause it just looks like a beast. However, if I was in charge of this I would’ve matched up the Cherokee SRT8 vs. the Chevy Trailblazer SS and the Ford F-150 SVT Raptor vs. the Dodge Powerwagon. Those would be some pretty cool match ups

I totally agree with StickShiftRick, he says it best, if you want a truck you should have a truck that is more truck like, he says……..Trucks being more truck-like >> Truck (or SUV) trying to be more car-like.
Hands down, the Ford without a doubt. I’m sorry, the only was trucks are any fun is by treating them like TRUCKS: bashing them through the trails, taking ‘em on the beach, casually throwing crap in the back without care or concern. I think those of you who love the whole idea of SRT-8 Grand Cherokees or Trailbazer SS’ and so forth have become to indoctrinated into this SUV/Truck subculture that you can’t acknowledge when it would be better to just go get a car at that point rather than a truck; a sports car makes a better sports car than an SUV or pickup, how ’bout that? My buddy Gino said it best, “The only way an SRT-10 Ram an be considered cool is if you look at it like a Viper crate-motor; you get a V10 Viper motor and the Ram is the crate it came in!” THANX sTICKsHIFTrICK u da man.

I bet this kid has never even seen an SRT8 Jeep in person just like I have never seen the Raptor in person hence my hesitation for forming an opinion about it, but I guess since he is behind his keyboard ordering under body neon light kits for his G5 he feels the need to be tough-LOL. It’s not that I am gifted (well some say I am) it has to to do with me being business smart. I have a Masters Degree in finance, do personal weight training and car custom detailing so I can afford the things I have so no I am not a dumbass Texan but do from time to time throw on my Resistol hat and boots and strap on my chaps and take some pics for Harrison as he wont stop asking for them-LOL!!!! Cbeech’s beautiful description of his manly G5, remember only real men drive Fords guess your not a man when your rolling in your G5, G5!!>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

“got my new G5 in February of 08 and I love it. For wheels I have Ultra Wheels Focal series 17″ black and chrome.I also installed some clear Eurolite corner bulbs which look blue in the day and clear at night, and also Eurolite blue headlight bulbs.Recently added a metalic Downforce Performance and Graphics banner on the front windshield.A sony Xplod 620U head unit with a 12″ Kicker sub inside of a Bassworx box powered by a Kicker amp are what make u p the sound system. After already owning two Pontiac Sunfires in recent years and having no complaints, and previously owning a Ford Focus(see picture below)going back to an updated and far more advanced car then the Sunfire was definitly the right decision.Even the base model has a very stylish interior, digital display and spoiler.I find the G5 is far more superior in design then other domestics. For the price, one of the most powerful(148 hp)for a 4-cylinder compared to imports and domestics.I always wanted a black two door and even though the dealer tried to pushed me to take a silver car tha t was on the lot I decided to wait a couple extra days to get the exact one I wanted.Well worth the wait.In the future I’d like to add a ram air intake and a performance exhaust, the only thing is that I got 160,000kms warranty on the car and would li ke to keep it that way cause GM can be assholes about aftermarket mods when it comes to warranty issues, but we will see.I’d love to lower it but Winter conditions in my area make it bad for winter driving.More pics are soon to follow and if u G5 or Cobalt guys have any comments or hints for me let me know.”

Do you drive with your collar flipped up and sport a rainbow sticker on the back of your window???

LOL Harrison…I’m glad people still dont know the capabilites of the SRT8 Jeep it makes it even more fun when you hand it to them at the track or in Mexico from light to light. Cutting 1.7 60 foots and running low 8′s and high 7′s in the 1/8 makes it hard to catch on the street and really puts a butt hurting on an unsuspecting challenger. I’d like to at least drive the Raptor before forming and opinion about it or assume its bad cause you know when you assume you typically make and ASS(out of)U(and)ME.

Wade….. you’re an ass. I agree with you on this one for ONCE. Opinions are like assholes and everyone has one. I’ve been the truck route SOOO many times and I’m over them. I’ve had stock truck and huge trucks. It all does come down to the owners needs and wants. The Jeep SRT is a purpose built Street Vehicle and the Raptor is a purpose built Off-Road vehicle. Each of them are gonna kick the shit out of the other in their perspective opposite enviroments. It just stuns me that people think that the Raptor could possible beat the SRT on the street and outrun it. The only thing I hate about owning a GC SRT8 is no one knows what it is or what it really can do. Ask the C6 owner from the other night what he thinks about my Jeep now!

CentralTexHemi
Apr 30, 2009 at 5:32 am

I own an 07 SRT8 Jeep GC and bought mine knowing I did not want to tow so I did not care that with its base setup I could not tow even though mopar and a few other companies sell a hitch that lowers the center exhuast to allow for a tow setup. I think each vehicle will be chosen based on drivers needs and wants. I had a truck for 5 years before buying the jeep and never used it for towing or hauling so having one was pretty much uselss so buying the AWD Jeep with its power and beauty was a no brainer for me but maybe not so much for someone who needs to tow or go off road or haul a heavy load. I also take mine to the track quiet a bit and have ran many of higher horse power trucks and cars including modded lightnings and with our AWD and beefy torque converter I have yet to lose to ones and run mid 12′s with just a tune and intake. I agree the comparrison between the two is so judemental it all comes down to a drivers needs and wants. The 6.2 that is coming out for the Raptor in 2010 will have to prove itself against the 6.1 Hemi. Just saying that with the 6.2 and a supercharger gives it more horsepower does not mean it will run faster than the current SRT Jeep model. FYI a 6.4 SRT8 Jeep is in the plans for 2012. I’m with a few other I love my street Jeep and if need be for a real comparrison we can slap a SC or Turbo on the Jeep and run mid to low 11′s all day which is already happening.

Bourkemaster
Apr 30, 2009 at 5:16 am

Oh also, I doubt anyone is towing anything with the Jeep unless you move the exhaust pipes. The exhaust outlets are in the center of the rear bumper, right where a tow-hitch would be.

Bourkemaster
Apr 30, 2009 at 5:13 am

Don’t suppose I could test drive both and get back to you. I would happily drive the Jeep but I’d probably have to say F-150 for now just because I can get more utility out of it.

CDub0917, I never mentioned about anyone being scared about fast driving. What I mentioned is the fact that you guys there automatically have in mind the POSSIBILITY of getting speeding tickets whenever you go more than 10mph over the speed limits because of the strict enforcements. 65 – 75 mph speed limit is chicken feed with the kind of roads (and engines) there. No question about the guts to go fast.

daemonrayne
Apr 29, 2009 at 10:33 pm

both interesting cars, i can’t see a proper use for the jeep though… why do you need a 4wd suv for city driving? it’s just stupid… i can get similar or better space from just about any wagon…

what i don’t understand is why both engines are so big… 5.4L only putting out 320 hp? i can get similar action from a 3L v6 (TRD aurion, subaru liberty) or a turbo’d 2L 4 pot (evo’s, WRX’s, euro’s)… and the 6.1L jeep? where would you use it? where are 420 horses possibly going to be used in a suburban or city environment?

i personally think both cars are stupid, but i suppose that if i were to live out in the country i would consider the ford as it has proper off-roading capabilities… even then i’d get a real 4WD like a land/range rover and do it properly.

so the ford it is… yuck.

Why are there so many people thinking speed is all that matters? Now that I’m reading comments, people really don’t make sense. The Raptor is quick enough for a truck on the road, but it delivers superior ability to handle offroad while still being practical for every type of terrain. It can probably tow more (even if it boasts less HP than the SRT8) meaning you can take some quads, the friends, the dogs, and a hundred 12 packs of soda to the desert. The only things the SRT8 Cherokee would be good for is for autocross, drag racing, and if the wifey kicks you out of the house, you’d have a spacious place to sleep if you can’t afford a hotel room.

The Raptor by far! I saw it at SEMA, it’s really larger than life. Also, to me, living practically means living limitlessly. And in the autmotive world, that applies to where you can go. It doesn’t matter to me if I have a super quick car, I still have to be careful so I don’t kill anyone or get a ticket. At least with the Raptor, I can go damn near anywhere I want; road, dirt, mud, hills, snow, rain, and steep grades. Also I have a bed to put a big TV in to take home, not to mention it seats 5 people so there’s some romo for the kids to take to soccer. The SRT8? A quick SUV, but that’s really it.

Apr 29, 2009 at 7:57 pm

You people are idiots, the Raptor was designed for offroading, it wasint built for on road street racing. I garantee the raptor is faster on the trails. True offroading would tear the jeep to shreds. No contest.

Apr 29, 2009 at 7:57 pm

Wow it’s getting pretty heated in here. I have heard way to much about the whole off road thing vs. street thing and I admit these are two way too different vehicles to compare. For less money I could have a vehicle(Raptor) and stand out among the crowd easily with appeal, and performance or I could just get a jeep and look just like everyone else with the exception that I could go faster on the road. The Raptor can do both, you wanna go fast on the highway go right ahead, you wanna tear up the dirt go straight ahead. With the SRT8 you get one of these. I could take the 5k that I would save with the Raptor and throw some well thought out mods on it to make it go faster. Like I said I am 100% for the Raptor it is better Overall just as Southernguy put it. As for HarrisonZ I love the SVT lightning it’s awesome, but the lightning stock could probably not even keep up with the Raptor either. If you are looking towards a sleeper waste your money on the SRT8, if you want to spend your money on something that is worth it, looks and performance wise then get the Raptor. This is my opinion I like Fords and I think that the Raptor has potential in the working indusrty, offroading game, and just plain out fun section.

GlamismanTJ
Apr 29, 2009 at 7:49 pm

Ford Raptor. If I owned it I could actually call it a truck because it is more than just a fast SUV for the streets, it is actually designed to go offroad. The SRT-8 just contradicts what a Jeep is supposed to be.

SouthernGuy8503
Apr 29, 2009 at 7:29 pm

Harrison – you amke good points, of course the jeep will be faster, but the Raptor is still better OVERALL as practicality, you think someone will buy an SRT8 cherokee and use it for towing and hauling stiff? maybe a little but barely any so its just a gas guzzling daily driver and you can say “its got a HEMI!”, the raptor you can use more as a truck if you needed rather its on road or off, and those tires ain’t no 37s, hell i have a 98 chevy silverado Z71 and the stock size is about 31s, even with a 6 inch lift i could only put 35s on it and even then it would rub if i hit a big enough bump, they just look bigger in the pic because its a lot bigger sidewall than the little low profiles on the jeep, the jeep looks like it has maybe 20s on it and that makes for more of a rolling mass so really the rim and tire combo on the raptor is probably lighter than the rim and tire combo on the jeep which will slow it down a little and the braking will be worse, and as for your F250, think about it, your truck is geared for towing and hauling, not speed so of course people will pass you in higher gears, not nessecarily because of the aerodynamics, well just not 100% aerodynamics
>>>>>>>>>>>>
now im not shooting down your opinion but it just seems like your shooting down the people that pick the Raptor just because they don’t agree with you, you have your opinion and let people have their own, i pick the Raptor because it fits what i’d do with it more than the jeep would, the jeep it just for the street and as a daily drievr grocery getter, could use it for towing but think about it, only a handful of people that would buy the SRT8 cherokee would actually tow with it, the Raptor is faster than the F150 and you can still use it for towing, hauling and going off-road, if the person won’t use it as a truck and just on the street then ya the cherokee is better but the Raptor is just better OVERALL for someone thats going to use it as something more than a daily driver and picking up the kids and going to the grocery store

lets be honest, both trucks are nice. you cant say neither truck is not highly ranked in its class. however, its like comparing apples to oranges. sure they are both round fruit but they just arent the same. ones geared for more suburbs while the other country side/dessert. Seeing as I am more for street and track performance, my vote goes for the Jeep. (however I wouldnt mind the Raptor)

4DoorSedanMan
Apr 29, 2009 at 7:21 pm

SRT-8 FTW!! It’s faster, and isn’t even Superchared. Although the Ford Raptor SVT is a nice truck & all, the SRT8 is still faster and looks better and is a better ALL AROUND truck than the Raptor…

Apr 29, 2009 at 6:43 pm

Damn Skiman….. basically a lifted Challenger? WTF does THAT mean? The only thing in common between the 2 are engine and tranny. NOTHING ELSE! One’s RWD, the other is AWD. One is a Jeep, the other is based on the Charger platform. Thanks for the good laugh on that one.

Listen guys who think the Ford will take the Jeep when the new motor is out, it’s still not going to take the SRT8. Weight alone will tell you it won’t. I don’t see the Ford running 4.3-4.6 0-60 times and a 1/4 between 12.9-13.3. The Ford is running 37′s or something like that vs. low profile tires on the Jeep? You know how heavy the Ford’s tires are and how much unsprung weight there is with them? It will be a fast truck for sure, but deal with it guys, it won’t be able to beat the Jeep. Look at areodynamics alone. The Ford is a flying barn door. The Jeep isn’t much better, but it’s got an advantage. My 04 Ford F-250 on 38′s put down 424/768rwp….. I could get a TON of people from 0-50, after that they blew my doors off. Why? A flying BRICK! Heavy tires. If the new engined Raptor takes out a SRT8 Jeep….. then I’ll shave my head on YouTube for everyone to see. Stock to stock that is. The only place a Raptor will beat the Jeep is off-road and that’s it. Period point blank. Deal with it. You can’t have a fantastic off-road suspension in a street truck and have it run on a race course or haul ass on the street. The Raptor isn’t really built for the street and the Jeep SRT8 isn’t built for off-road. So someone needs to smack the author for even bring this BS up!

both vehicles look realy good. i think ford has realy stepped there game up and im not even a ford guy. but i would have to go with the SRT8 because im more about going fast, i still like to hit up the trails every once in a while in my buddies truck. always a fun time.

Raptor be cause its a good $5,000 difference in price plus the new 6.2 liter V8 thats gonna be put in this winter its just gonna blow Cherokee out of the water. Jeep does make a good vehicle my father owns a 2006 Jeep wrangler unlimited but in this case the Raptor is better than the SRT8. You cant really compare the vehicles until the 6.2 liter comes out for the Raptor then the prices for both vehicles will be closer in price and then you can compare because now you can’t compare Jeeps best model to Fords second best model its just not right

hey Garage510…..we love big power and to let you know….we are deffinatly not scared to get our cars fast. I got my Chevy Trailblazer up to 110 on the freeway and 105 on the back roads (wont go any faster on the freeway). My God this is one idiotic comparo. So bad that I had to sign up for it. Comparing these 2 is like comparing a Lambo to a Range Rover. It just doesn’t make sense. First of all for all you crazies talking about liftig a damn GC SRT8….. it ain’t gonna happen. It’s an AWD transfer case not a selectable. There’s a German Company that lifted one but no one has ever seen it actually run. The Ford is a sweet truck. I’ve had 2 Super Duties and 2 Bronco’s. I love them all. Throw a SC on the Ford and the Jeep is STILL gonna wax that ass. Sorry to say. Throw a SC on the Jeep as well and it will just be plain ugly! This Jeep was designed ONLY for the street. The comment from BlackCompany just makes himself look like a total idiot. Of ALL THE JEEPS MADE, this is the ONLY street version. Do a little research before making yourself look like a moron. Ford has NEVER made a truck/suv that can compare with the Jeep… PERIOD! Even the ALMIGHTY Lightening can’t keep up. All this hubbub from everyone kills me. Only a certain select few have any common sense enough to realize what is even being compared and for that, I thank you. When these come out, I will gladly line my Jeep up next to it. Throw a SC on it, I’ll throw a Vortech kit on mine and be running 11.3-11.5′s. We’ll see then. Till then……. I’m waiting. Tick tock tick tock.

The Raptor obviously! Why buy a Jeep when chrysler has one foot in the grave and on the brink of a heart attack? besides would you want to get a vehicle that gets 4 mpgs, eats brakes for lunch and makes u look like a cock everytime u get in it or buy a ford?

SouthernGuy8503
Apr 29, 2009 at 3:55 pm

CSDavis – calm the hell down, main reason i picked the raptor is because im not an SUV guy, im a truck guy, and me personally i’d use the truck for what trucks are built for, towing, hauling and off-road, ya you can take the jeep off-road but its still a cherokee, the wranglers and CJs, those types of jeeps are great for off-road, cherokees ain’t as good, you say you can put a lift on the cherokee, ya you can but thats even more money when the cherokee already cost $5K more, ya the SRT8 has more preformance but for me the raptor has more overall use than a cherokee, ya of course you can have a hitch on the cherokee but im pretty damn sure the raptor could tow more and if you look they have pretty much the same TQ
>>>>>>>>>>
oh and this is an overall match, not just performance, he put the specs in so we’d know, this match up isn’t just soley on performance, so don’t start PMSing because not everybody agrees with you, your almost as bad as that Mud4x4 in the pontiac blog

Apr 29, 2009 at 3:19 pm

ok for all you assholes who are choosing the fuckin truck based solely on the fact that “you can take the truck off roading but you cant take the SRT8 off road”, you all need to fucking realize that jeep has its heritage in the off roading industry and built the SRT8 gc as a STREET jeep. If you want to off road then DONT BUY THE SRT8 – i believe this comparison was meant to be based off of performance (since the author included the performance stats in the intro) and modern styling. Just because the god damn picture shows the ford in an off road setting does not mean that its an absolutely unbelievable offroading machine. I also think that ford made this truck as a response to the dodge ram daytona editions. Anyways, I’ll take the 100 more horses and 20 inch rims on the SRT8 anyday over a ford. You can always lift it and throw some tires on it if u wanna off road although i have no idea why you would want to ruin it like that.

CDub0917
Apr 29, 2009 at 3:18 pm

wow…dik what to choose these are almost like total opposites, you have the beast of a jeep that most people wouulld be scared shitless to take off road due to the lowerstance and its more a street truck, while the raptor with it’s fox racing suspension is built the be jumped and have the shit kicked out of it….i dont kno what to choose

COME ON GUYS CONNECT YOUR SENSES if you want 2 go off road get a trail rated Grand Cherokee or Wrangler this jeep is a street and track toy only, the raptor is no match for this jeep on performance, Ford doesn’t even make a truck fast enough 2 even keep up with this srt8 and off road no ford can match a trail rated jeep. DONE DEAL SRT8 ALL THE WAY.
