CarDomain Obscure Muscle Car Parking Lot : The 1970-71 Plymouth Sport Fury GT

By Jim Brennan

UDMan

Welcome to the CarDomain Obscure Muscle Car Parking Lot, a regular feature which aims to expand the notion of what a muscle car is, and to show that once and for all a full-sized car can be classified a performance machine. 1970 was quite a year for the performance car market, with more models available than ever before, including compacts, mid-sized, and full-sized cars. That includes this full-sized bruiser, The Plymouth Sport Fury GT.

Caption Contest: Last Week's Winner!

By Jen Dunnaway

Editor

With all the New York International Auto Show hullaballoo going on this week, our beloved Caption Contest got temporarily shelved. But don’t worry, it’s back with a vengeance. And while you guys are going full steam ahead with this week’s offering, we’d thought we’d take a minute to thank you for last week’s entries and announce the winner. This time around, it’s got to be 74Furyous, who quipped “Majic beans? Ya right. So I threw them out my window and went to the tanning salon.” Congrats, man! Runners up include ttenner, with the hilarious if slightly convoluted gem: “Newsflash: the mafia has bought out Brawny paper towels, and they’ve sent its spokesperson door to door to illicit more sales. If this man approaches you we advise you to buy their product, because, as you can see, either way you’re going to get the quicker picker-upper.” And with all your carrying on about Chuck Norris, we have to give a shout-out to Brett Powers for best Chuck Norris joke: “Tornados park trees on trucks. Only Chuck Norris can park trucks in trees.” Nice work all around, and 74Furyous, we’ll be contacting you shortly about swag!

Check out today’s new installment in our dauntingly popular caption contest!

Red 6-Speed Camaro SS in Manhattan

By Rob Einaudi

Driving a new red Camaro makes you a total rock star. People were stopping in their tracks, yelling at us, whistling, swerving their cars and trucks over toward us, giving us the thumbs up and generally acting like total idiots around this car. We literally could not go one block in Manhattan or Brooklyn without making some kind of scene.

We drove an SS with an automatic yesterday and I have to say I much prefer the 6 speed manual. The exhaust note seems louder and deeper and the car just seems to have more umph (and it does–422 hp vs. 400 hp on the automatic SS). But, I don’t like the clutch at all. Maybe our particular test car has been beat quite a bit (there was already a fair amount of rubber on the rear fenders from burn outs, and one of the wheels had some nasty curb rash) but the clutch just felt, well, weird. Kind of springy with a really awkward, non-linear engagement. Definitely took some getting used.

Ken Block Bonus Footage!

By Weston Henderson

Weston Henderson

A few months ago we all saw the finished version of the Gymkhana video that Ken Block and his team put together, and we loved every minute of it.  Well now we have the snippets of film that have been combined into a new video showing the making of the first.  Pretty sweet if you ask me!

Hot: Gucci-Edition Hornet Interior!

By Jen Dunnaway

If you think that high-end designer trim packages on limited-edition vehicles is some new thing, you’re dead wrong. Back in the day, AMC was all over that, and personally I think they made it a little less boring than the current offerings (like Hyundai’s yawn-worthy Prada edition Genesis sedan. I mean really, what’s so Prada about it? Woo, it’s got leather seats–big deal). At the Tom Mack AMC auction this weekend at Lowe’s Motor Speedway, Rich Truesdell spotted this heavy-on-the-green 1973 Gucci edition Hornet Sportabout. Rich thought it was hideous, but I like ugly things–and I totally want this! Come on, how often do you see a car with emerald green carpeting? I’d make this my Fremont car in a second. NYIAS: Hyundai Nuvis

By Jim Brennan

UDMan

Hyundai has introduced two of the most talked about new cars this year: the Genesis Sedan, and the hot new Genesis Coupe. They are also responsible for a huge marketing coup, the Hyundai Assurance Plan, that has helped grow the brand, while almost everyone else shrank. Within this volatile market, Hyundai has given us a glimpse into their future, with the Nuvis. Continue reading after the jump.

Baghdad Motor Racing On Video

By Craig McAlpine

imotormag

A BBC correspondent has discovered a new uprising in Baghdad near Jadriyah Lake in the south of the city, but this time it’s motor racing. Featured in the video are a couple of Pontiac Firebirds, a Chevy Camaro, Toyota Celica and an old BMW 5-series. They might not be the ultimate racing machines, but considering the situation over there it’s pretty awesome that they have started racing as a pastime. Check out the video!

ZipTruck in DC

By Katherine Helmetag

Atomicalex

I love the idea of ZipCars: less traffic, more parking, and so forth. I had no idea they had ZipTrucks, too! Talk about the perfect solution to the hauling problem. I spotted this Taco in Washington, DC while vacationing in the US capitol. It’s bearing what has to be the best license plate ever: a “Taxation without representation” DC plate. Check out the hot Porsche I spotted at a parking meter after the jump!

NYIAS: Ford Transit Connect

By Mike Musto

RideLust.com

A legend in Europe for decades, the Ford Transit van is just now making its way over to the States. I was pretty stoked to check this thing out and for good reason: I need a new van. When first viewing it there are a couple of things that you’ll notice immediately. For one, it’s very tall and narrow. And it appears to be based on an automotive platform as opposed to a truck platform.
