Bus Gets Bumped

By Mike Musto

RideLust.com

Last night’s episode brought out the fight in the final four competitors of this season’s Bullrun. Team Avalanche, Corvette, VW and Shelby all stepped to the plate. In the beginning, Team Shelby jumped out of the gate with flying colors and came in first at the checkpoint in Scottsdale, AZ followed by Teams Avalanche, Corvette and VW.

From there it was onto checkpoint two at Firebird International Raceway. Spiro from Team Shelby touted himself as navigator extraordinaire, until he forgot how to read a map and brought them to Phoenix International Raceway as opposed to Firebird. Spiro had an alibi, however, the naked ass of a big man and how he shot them the moon and threw off their concentration.

Team Avalanche came in first to Firebird, thus putting everyone else in the Challenge. Corvette, VW and Shelby duked it out in a rather entertaining competition where they had to back up, spin around and run through some light polls. Team VW’s operation Butterfly was a good idea, and honestly, I thought they nailed it. Apparently I was wrong because they got the boot. Oh well, can’t win em all I suppose.

Corvette, Avalanche and Shelby remain. It’ll be a good match up, so stay tuned until next week’s final elimination. Team VW: sorry guys, ya’ll were a blast to watch, and you should be proud—you’ve done things in a VW Bus that have never been done before…

HMX on the Carpet: Finishing the Interior

By Dan Strohl

Hemmings

It took all winter, but I finally freed up enough cash for a new carpet set from ACC recently. While the carpet sets normally come with the shredded rags-type backing glued to the carpet, a friend of mine recommended specifying that they not include any type of backing, especially with all the Dynamat I laid down.

Once it arrived, I spread it out to relieve the creases incurred while shipping. I probably should have chosen a warmer time of year for the installation so I could set the carpet out in the sun and let it loosen up, but here in Vermont, it usually rains for that one warm day out of the year, so I let the carpet rest on the hood of the AMX for a few days. Or anyway, that’s what Edmunds is reporting today. According to inside sources, GM will make the announcement on Monday. Sounds like the whole “niche brand” idea has gone out the window.

1956 Cadillac Sedan DeVille

Murray Pfaff, owner of Pfaff Designs, is best known as the creator of many of the coolest project vehicle designs (renderings) for other companies and individuals (like Sammy Hagar) to ever grace the pages of major magazines. However, the tables were turned when Pfaff decided to take his classic 1956 Cadillac Sedan DeVille, which he’s owned for 15 years, from rendering to reality, and make it available to his client companies for shows and special events.

So far, “FireMaker” (named because of its two-stage fuel injection system that shoots flames 20 feet rearward) has been showcased at the SEMA Show in Las Vegas, the 2008 DUB Show Tour in Detroit, the GM Heritage Parade during the Woodward Dream Cruise in Royal Oak, Michigan and various promotions and displays by MTX, Goodyear, Optima, Ididit and Street Legal Customs. It was also filmed by General Motors for an online campaign on YouTube, featuring high-profile Cadillacs, when has been viewed more than 13,000 times. Continue reading at DUB Magazine

Sheik Pours Millions into Drag Racing

By Rob Einaudi

Editor-in-Chief

This year, 22-year-old Sheik Khalid bin Hamad Al-Thani of Qatar has invested $10 million into the Al-Anabi team of Alan Johnson. It’s been great for the sport, which has been hit hard by the recession. The team is competitive, too. In its third outing last month, Al-Anabi’s Top Fuel dragster driven by Larry Dixon Jr. won the AC Delco Gatornationals. Read the full article at the Wall Street Journal. Via BangShift.com

What's Next: 100 MPG Delivery Van

By Rob Einaudi

Editor-in-Chief

Bright Automotive unveiled their new 100 mpg delivery van on Earth Day. From the article in Wired:

The Bright Idea (a name too clever by half!) is aimed squarely at fleet customers—the local cable company, the post office, that sort of thing. It’s got lots of room—cubic feet, to be exact—and a 2,000-pound payload. With a 50-mile, all-electric range, the Idea sounds like a great urban delivery rig. It has a mixed hybrid drivetrain under the hood. A gasoline engine delivers the front wheels when needed (when the battery gets low) and helps recharge the battery pack as it approaches depletion. An electric motor drives the rear wheels. Bright is still shopping for an engine supplier, but the rest of the drivetrain will use Bosch and Getrag components.

My buddy Mike B is their VP of Corporate Strategy, so hopefully I can get him to give us the inside scoop on this thing as it moves toward production. Maybe we can even get a Bright Idea ride page started!
