The Corsica Q-Ship

By Brian Lohnes

BangShift.com

Most call cars like this lowly looking Chevy Corsica a sleeper. We like the older school Q-Ship terminology.

Q-Ships were essentially decoy ships used by the British and US Navies during WWI and WWII. They were heavily armed warships dressed up to look like merchant vessels. The trick came with the Japanese subs or German U-boats came up to make a surface attack and were then blown to smithereens by the harmless looking steamer in front of them.

That brings up right back to the Corsica, yes, the Chevy Corsica in the video below. This little killer has a 3.4 liter V6, four doors, junk paint, and, oh yeah, a turbo. It goes 13’s easy, has seen the 12’s and has probably humiliated hundreds of unsuspecting Japanese subs and U-Boats, err, we mean Mustangs and Camaros. It has several neat tricks up its sleeve using factory parts as well.

Dare to be different!

I remember working at a Chevy dealer in 1991 detailing cars and one of the salesmen was trying to sell this elder couple a new 1991 Caprice. As they were walking out to look at it they walked by a new Corsica and the elder man asked, “what is this car”? The salesman replied, ” It’s just a Corsica. You wouldn’t like it.” I busted up laughing and as soon as they were gone I punched a fat ding in the right front fender for fun since it was “just” a Corsica. Later that day I purposely made 4 dings on a new yellow Geo Storm. I’ll have to punch a 1991 Corsica again pretty soon, if only there are any still running. I might punch a 4 door base trim Cobalt instead. Not much of a Chevy fan man.

Probably a variant of the 60 degree 3.4 V6’s, like my Firebird’s L32 V6. There was a rare factory turbo version, but I guess this one’s aftermarket powered. 3.4’s can be very potent in a lighter car, if they’re setup right.

That is my kind of project. I would love to run that Corsica in my EXP in the battle of the WTFs. Very cool and keep up the good work.
