When Nitrous Goes Bad

Nitrous, like fire, can be man’s best friend or worst enemy when it goes wrong. Consider this video as going as wrong as it can possibly go.

The drag car in question suffers a flaming nitrous backfire which immediately erupts under the hood into a raging fire. The track officials armed with weenie extinguishers don’t get it out and only really succeed in making the fire gods angrier until stuff under the hood starts to melt and, well we won’t ruin it for you.

We’re not sure what track this video is from but their safety crew isn’t exactly made up of people possessing Carl Lewis-esque speed.

oh ok! I thought you were talking about the guy in the video. And yes true a lot of people do it very wrong. I can’t remember where I saw someone drill a hole on the throttle body and put the nosle there.

What a bunch of idiots. Those guys must be volunteers… But even then, you’d think there would be a little safety training before handing off a fire extinguisher. That one guy who kept going with the extinguisher (after everyone else backed away) is lucky the fire was relatively calm and he didn’t get a piece of shrapnel lodged in his body.

But what I was trying to convey was there is alot of people putting nitrous on motors not set up for it or put on incorrectly. This appears to be an extreme case of bad mojo.

Brett I don’t think that was a kid in the video. And what where they thinking trying to put out the extinguisher that size? It looks like the extinguisher was taking a small piss.

Too many idiots think nitrous is easy horsepower. Its not just throwing it on and using it willy nilly like in Fast & Furious kids.

i never liked nitrous, it just seems to be fake HP, it just adds the HP to the engine for a short period of time, its not actual HP that the engine is producing, its just an additive, in a way it could be considered cheating because you could be behind and then hit the button and you pull ahead, but if people want to use it then let them, thats just my opinion lol, also im not sure if its true so don’t hold me to it or anything but i’ve been told that nitrous eats up your pistons or just over time fries them or something, but not sure just what someone told me so im not saying nitrous really does its just what i been told so im not sure
