Infiniti FX50 Kills the BMW X6 on CarDomain »

By Rob Einaudi
Ryan sent me these pics two weeks ago and I forgot about them til I saw this chrome Mercedes SLR McLaren on Jalopnik. So is anyone else sick of this chrome car craze? Via Exotic Spotter

It’s nice actually. Well that’s life, some will hate, some will like. Some would embrace communism, some would fight it. Now what if some country imports Ferraris while the others shoot each other for food? It’s just the way it is.
And yes it is chrome paint invented over 2 decades now used on plastic “chrome”. And an RB26 engine swap could even be more expensive than those work.
Wish someone would invent Gun-Metal finish car paints that’s totally scratch proof!

I only read 4 comments about this and thought I would feel cool posting….
Firstly…”NORPHIUSCHRIS”, the caps lock key is just next to the A key and below the TAB key… Try and turn it off when you’re typing… We can all read lowercase. Uppercase is not required for the english language to be read properly. Secondly, I personally don’t care if your an engineer for painting stuff, this is simply people’s comments… we know it’s paint, who would chrome plate a $100,000 merc? It’s just not worth it.
Finally, my opinion, If you are going to chrome-paint your car, why not do the mags too? The merc looks pretty terrible with a shiney car and the standard Merc 17″ mags on the wheels. Basically, if you
re going to be TACKY, go all the way.
May 30, 2009 at 9:47 pm
Crap.. I’m out of the loop this one.??
May 30, 2009 at 3:27 pm
Oh, so that’s where all of our oil money goes. That’s a relief, I though our money was being wasted..
May 29, 2009 at 5:18 pm
tasteless tacky farkin waste of time n money.
May 29, 2009 at 10:59 am
it is paint, http://www.alsacorp.com they make a painting process to “chrome” pretty much anything, one of the body shops that i worked for had a painter there that had sprayed it before, not really a big deal, that is also how you are able to chrome the plastic bumpers….
May 29, 2009 at 5:02 am
WELL WELL I’M A INDUSTRIAL ENGINEER SPECIALIZE IN SILVER DESIGNS AND IS NOT SILVER PLATED AND EITHER NOT VINYL, FIRST OF ALL THE REFLECTION CLEARNESS SAIDS THAT IS NOT VINYL, SECOND SILVER DOESN’T LOOK BLUEISHH, SILVER LOOK MORE YELLOWISH AT LEAST A LITTLE YELLOW TINT ON THE REFLECTION. I THINK IS A PAINT JOB!! THIRD BUMPERS ARE NOT METAL.
May 29, 2009 at 3:45 am
I think it looks stupid. It’s just a way to blow money that doesn’t involve talent or creativity. Other than the chrome the cars are totally stock. Why not hire an artist to do a cool airbrush design over the whole car? Who knows maybe the sun just bakes off most paint jobs over there? And no, it’s not photoshop. Chroming in photoshop keeps the reflection but not the color. The reflection in those cars clearly have accurately colored reflections.
May 28, 2009 at 11:33 pm
Are you sure those are in Kuwait? Because the plates say Dubai.
May 28, 2009 at 9:24 pm
thats not an Mercedes SLR McLaren in the pic
May 28, 2009 at 8:36 pm
That’s not chrome. The Bentley is an aluminum body. It’s just polished. Dummies.
May 28, 2009 at 8:36 pm
its not photoshopped, because the reflections are too clear, they are real, nice nice!!!
May 28, 2009 at 6:28 pm
that is photoshop, vheck it out http://www.skeletorscorpse.com/joomla/content/view/137/31/
they are 2 black cars that have been edited in photoshop
May 28, 2009 at 6:19 pm
clean chrome job, but dirty ass wheels…. tsk tsk
May 28, 2009 at 5:56 pm
I’d like to eat a double bacon cheeseburger, and then go put greasy finger prints all over ‘em.
May 28, 2009 at 5:15 pm
Too much of anything is a bad thing.
May 28, 2009 at 3:45 pm
hey ppl…this is no big deal…its the new sick way of showoff!
these are auto stickers. these come in different color and patterns…and can be cut and stuck.it cost a mere 400$ and it done…if u notice it doesnt have the chrome finish, just cause its a lame worthless sticker.
and the cars are from “dubai,UAE” not kuwait!!
May 28, 2009 at 3:40 pm
Those are some ugly ass wheels..
May 28, 2009 at 2:39 pm
the silver surfers new ride!
May 28, 2009 at 12:38 pm
I would be surprised if they don’t start ticketing people with chrome cars expecially in a desert region. The sun shining on it in the middle of the day would blind anyone else on the road
May 28, 2009 at 11:35 am
It’s NOT Chrome plating its paint! Its Chrome PAINT Its a special possess that makes it look like Chrome…Nothing more then what we do here in America with fancy paint jobs….I REPEAT IT IS NOT CHROME PLATING!!!…. And people Its called *Google* please use it before you act all ignorant and hate on something you have no clue about.
Thank you and good day.
May 28, 2009 at 11:35 am
thats that shit Fuck you haters!
May 28, 2009 at 11:25 am
Some people have too much money in their hands, why not use that money to feed hungry children. This is the worst idea ever. Who ever thought of it should get shot the person who owns this car should be beaten…
May 28, 2009 at 11:21 am
Alright, I dont know why that comment below came through as Evotionn… but my screen name is SickSpeedMonte. Wierd…
May 28, 2009 at 11:21 am
the slr looks like shit with that cheap looking spray on chrome.the cars from Kuwait i heard were silver plated not chrome
May 28, 2009 at 11:19 am
They’re vinyl wrapped…
May 28, 2009 at 11:18 am
it has to be certain cars ,probably old skool cars would do great if is chrome, but not cars like mercedes slr mclaren, its just dosent seem right to me. my 2 cents
May 28, 2009 at 10:49 am
I like it. A lot. Just as long as it doesn’t get overused, I’ll continue loving it.
May 28, 2009 at 9:09 am
They remind me of the old Hot Wheels cars
May 28, 2009 at 8:09 am
That paint job looks SWEET!!!!
Now just paint a Challenger or Camaro that color!
BuyaRiceBurner.com » Ever Wonder What your Gas Money Buys?
May 28, 2009 at 8:00 am
[...] keep on filling up those gas guzzlers and while you can barely buy groceries, these guys can keep chrome plating their rides that cost 3x more than your home. Maybe next time gas gets to $5+ a gallon they can do some gold [...]
May 20, 2009 at 1:50 pm
I like it, must be a pain to clean
May 20, 2009 at 1:35 pm
I hope gold doesn’t make a come back.
May 20, 2009 at 12:59 pm
is that legal?
May 20, 2009 at 12:55 pm
Not the best thing in the world
May 20, 2009 at 12:54 pm
“Flight of the Navigator” flashbacks!
May 20, 2009 at 12:49 pm
May 20, 2009 at 12:09 pm
Ver Nice, I would just hate to be on the same road on a sunny day, lol.
May 20, 2009 at 11:53 am

May 20, 2009 at 11:52 am
have fun keepin it clean…………have fun payin for that………..but it looks pretty sweet lol
May 20, 2009 at 11:24 am
I think it was cool to see one or two at semi but now it’s not that cool.
May 20, 2009 at 9:07 am
Hahha…I think thats Hot
May 20, 2009 at 8:27 am
Only in Dubai! Hope i get to live there some day!
May 20, 2009 at 7:42 am
Looks cool i like it but it would only look good on some cars like the 2010 camaro ss like ILLY-Sase said ;] Would be blinding but hey ud win hella trophies! =D
May 20, 2009 at 7:24 am
lmao pass the shades out n gett ur sun tanning cream cuz those mofos is bright jus think how much yo insurance would be with a all chrome car dizzm but those would be coo fo a weekend driver when u stunt on dem but naked broads
May 20, 2009 at 6:05 am
how about you drop one off at my house and then ill let ya know….they sweet
May 20, 2009 at 3:50 am
Man i would love one of these, especially at night. Would make the inconsiderate arseholes think twice about leaving their high beams on and tailgating you. Let them see how blinding their shitty lights are.
May 20, 2009 at 2:53 am
Weird, just plain weird.
May 20, 2009 at 12:00 am
Beat the shit out of them and you can make yourself a cool hall of mirrors.
May 19, 2009 at 11:18 pm
I say for show and it depends on the car. I like that Bentley but not with chrome. Some of the new car designs out there are stupid looking like some of the hybrids. To put chrome on them yuck.
May 19, 2009 at 9:32 pm
so i say fuk everyone i would paint all my cars chrome if i had to that way no one would run into my shit at a walmart parking lot or wtf ever ……. my cars might not be the best but i take pride in them and i like it( although im not saying the glare would be to much for traffic to deal w/ i.e. crashes ) looks god on certain cars i will agree!!!!!!!
May 19, 2009 at 8:26 pm
gay waste of money my trans am is better
May 19, 2009 at 7:57 pm
owh come on people dont be hatting yuu know you would want one of these cars!!!!!!! illegal my ass i hate illegal shit! yuu cant have dark windows cus its illegal i think this chrome stuff is dope!! go for it if you like it do wathever yuu want to ur ride f*** the haters!
May 19, 2009 at 7:46 pm
Nice, but looks like they over did it, i would think the paint, since its obviously not real chrome would fade, or other problems, such as matching it if repair is dne to a quarter panel, i think stainless steel would look better, like the one on some of the newer rolls royce
May 19, 2009 at 7:16 pm
woooooww this is dumb, i hope this isnt what cars are really coming to these days, thats gota be the ugliest car ive ever seen
May 19, 2009 at 6:53 pm
TO MUCH CROME! Frist The RIMS NOW THE WHOLE D#M CAR! WHAT MORE PEOPLE WANT! PINK & YELLOW NEXT LOL… HERE I AM!
May 19, 2009 at 6:53 pm
It’s definitely different, but the funnt thing is that most aren’t chrome, it’s actually a paint. I think that is kinda cheating!!! But the look is definitely one of a kind.
May 19, 2009 at 6:29 pm
I like it due to the fact that it’s different. Though if people are going to have chrome cars they should be for show only. Illegal on the road due to the glare factor which could cause wrecks.
May 19, 2009 at 6:03 pm
i think its fuckin awsome, looks sick i would love to drive around in that but polishing it would suck i tink
May 19, 2009 at 5:52 pm
May 19, 2009 at 5:40 pm
Just keep it off American Cars! (Well very few that are left on the road)
May 19, 2009 at 4:06 pm
For a show car sure but not practical beside i sure the hell dont want to be he sucker that has to polish all that chrome,,
May 19, 2009 at 2:45 pm
dont love it but i think that ab new 911 would look sick like this
May 19, 2009 at 2:29 pm
on certain cars it looks dope.
May 19, 2009 at 1:37 pm
May 19, 2009 at 12:44 pm
Personally, it is very tacky. I think it would look sick if it were a black chrome, or any other color chrome for that matter, except for silver chrome!
May 19, 2009 at 12:35 pm
Silver Surfer Car Lol.
May 19, 2009 at 12:34 pm
Its Alright But When The SunLight Shines On It I Think It Would Be A Distraction To Other Drivers….Leading To Cause Wrecks…Bad Idea.
May 19, 2009 at 12:24 pm
its deffinately interesting and if you like it you like it, but its a big no for me, if you look at my truck i worked to get rid of any chrome, i have just the front bumper and rear bumper left and give it unti lthe end of summer and they will be gone…so its a no from me as well
May 19, 2009 at 12:22 pm
IT SHOULD BE ILLEGAL
May 19, 2009 at 11:56 am
COME ON ARE YOU SERIOUS..?? THEY CREATED PAINT TO GET RID OF THAT ON THE DAMN CARS.. OF COURSE ITS UGLY.. NO WAY.. PLUS I WOULDNT WANT MY HEADLIGHTS SHINING BACK AT ME WHEN IM BEHIND ONE OF THEM..
May 19, 2009 at 11:34 am
Some dumbass on here probably likes it.
May 19, 2009 at 11:33 am
May 19, 2009 at 10:32 am
its looks retarded. and its dangerous.
May 19, 2009 at 10:21 am
It looks cool but only if the car is REALLY sleek. No VW Bug or anything like it!
May 19, 2009 at 10:15 am
i think it looks pretty sweet
May 19, 2009 at 10:12 am
looks like they forgot to paint’em, i vote…”NO”
May 19, 2009 at 9:19 am
i dont these cars look good all chromed
May 19, 2009 at 9:18 am
It just looks dumb…..
May 19, 2009 at 8:59 am
I like chrome but no car looks good with an all-chrome body as these pictures show. I mean that Bentley looks tacky and ugly as shit and Bentleys are beautiful and classy cars. It’s my dream car and they ruined it. Making a good-looking car look ugly-especially to a Bentley-should be punishable by law and anyone who chromes their entire car should recieve the maximum fine and serve time behind bars…ok maybe that’s a little harsh but really, who thought THAT was a good idea?
May 19, 2009 at 8:39 am
If it were an extremely fast car hell yea i’d keep the chrome paint job. It gives new meaning to silver streak or silver bullet.
May 19, 2009 at 8:11 am
Chrome on rims is ok and trim for cars but the entire body no thank you keep to those great paint jobs.
May 19, 2009 at 6:32 am
I remembered a hotwheels chrome Lotus back in the day. But a smoked chrome would look hot. I couldn’t imagine the problems driving something like these around.
May 19, 2009 at 6:13 am
I think covering a car in Chrome completely is a driving hazard to those around you. Those cars would reflect so much sun in every direction making it a danger to others.
I’d drive it
May 19, 2009 at 6:12 am
May 19, 2009 at 5:49 am
It’s tacky. If the car has the right lines and the right proportions, you don’t need gimmicky tricks like this to grab your attention.
May 19, 2009 at 4:29 am
id drive it!
May 19, 2009 at 4:21 am
its a toss up, I like it and then I dont. I would think it would look better on certain cars. Any one looking to do this better save up their money cuz this type of paint job will cost you alot. The price of the paint will be high and to have a painter who is experienced with this type of paint will be super expensive. I can already see a bunch of half assed painted chrome cars rolling around. This is not however new, Remember Pimp My Ride they did the silver surfer theme on a Honda CRX using the chrome paint.
May 19, 2009 at 4:00 am
I dont like it. you cant make out the beautiful lines of these cars. also it reminds me of the guy from Terminator 2 T-1000 lol
May 19, 2009 at 2:47 am
seems like way to much polishing to have some inconsiderate ass hole wipe their greecy hand down the side of it
May 18, 2009 at 11:38 pm
Way back, Darrel Waltrip had a chrome body of one of his cup cars. It was so blinding that he couldn’t see half the time, and I think they finally did the hood black! NASCAR wanted to outlaw it, but the trend faded out almost as fast as it came in. I would think the sun would be a problem for both the driver as well as other motorists.
May 18, 2009 at 10:48 pm
Looks bogus to me
May 18, 2009 at 10:47 pm
I think these ones look stupid honestly. But id definetely go for a lambo like this…. (the wheels would have to be black though WITH i nice chrome lip tho) to comment the rest of the car.
Now that would look good.
May 18, 2009 at 10:01 pm
only on the right car
May 18, 2009 at 9:50 pm
Nothing new to my eyes Ive seen one of these around 1999 I think it was it looks pretty much stupid and no it wont look right on any car lol maybe it would work for a pinstripe but the whole car LAME!
May 18, 2009 at 9:46 pm
looks cool and different but definitely a hazard to other drivers! I think the same of the bright chrome tankers that blind you when the sun hits them!
May 18, 2009 at 9:33 pm
… Lame …
May 18, 2009 at 9:24 pm
dont bother me
May 18, 2009 at 9:23 pm
I will tell you what im sick of… these POS cars you keep putting on the blog. c’mom the show off of the week looks like i made it in shop class and that red thing with the big wheels and the neg camber in front. it looks like its falling apart. You guys only think its cool bc its not from the U.S. If it was from here you would pass it off as rice. where are the nice clean cars. I like the VW that is on here and some of the other ones. but you guys are getting crazy with this crap. come on now.
May 18, 2009 at 8:18 pm
lol. the blue man group.
May 18, 2009 at 7:54 pm
HMMM BLUE MAN GROUP WILL HATE IT
May 18, 2009 at 7:26 pm
it can work on the right car, but it can’t be rolling stock alloys..
May 18, 2009 at 7:20 pm
Its too much. Unless its a Hot Wheel…
Its something you’d expect a 70′s Rockstar to do to his Lotus…
It would almost be undrivable from a *sun-in-my-eyes-* standpoint
May 18, 2009 at 7:17 pm
i like it, makes me think that any of those cars is about to shape shift into the bad guys from terminator movies!
May 18, 2009 at 7:07 pm
I like the idea. I see nothing wrong with it at all. Looks pretty slick to me and by the way……….those photos just look fake to me for some reason. I don’t believe they are real.
May 18, 2009 at 6:43 pm
Reminds me of some Hot Wheels that I had back in the ’70′s. They didn’t get me laid back then, probably won’t now either.
May 18, 2009 at 6:34 pm
its different and would be cool but it has to be paint cuz you cant chrome dip a whole car as far as i know and why do they gotta lie on spraybombs and say they are chrome when they are just silver
May 18, 2009 at 6:31 pm
May 18, 2009 at 6:29 pm
i saw a camaro that had been painted chrome. very dangerous to other drivers on sunny days. had to stop the car when it went by from the glare.
May 18, 2009 at 6:07 pm
tacky as hell!!!
May 18, 2009 at 5:40 pm
YEA on high price Euro cars only
May 18, 2009 at 5:19 pm
Yes chrome all the way!!!
May 18, 2009 at 4:58 pm
That chrome Bently look’s hot.
May 18, 2009 at 4:48 pm
Chrome cars looks insain! I wish I could have one and ILLY-Sase knows whats up 2010 Chrome Camaro damn SON!
May 18, 2009 at 4:41 pm
i think a chrome SLR McLaren would look the best!
May 18, 2009 at 4:08 pm
i can already see rappers getting in line to own a chrome car with 28inch spinners.
May 17, 2009 at 8:09 pm
Chrome 2010 Camaro SS…..nuff said.
May 17, 2009 at 3:01 pm
May 16, 2009 at 12:42 am
May 15, 2009 at 10:12 pm
Only one word NICE Idea. But not all cars can look this cool be careful guys.
May 15, 2009 at 8:21 pm
I think its kinda cool. It sure would suck to keep it looking clean though, worst then a black car.
May 15, 2009 at 6:46 pm
chrome as a “what if” way back when I was about 7 years old. now that I’ve seen ‘em, it’s pretty much what I expected and yeah, I still would like to have a chrome car.
May 15, 2009 at 3:34 pm
It depends on the car really. I loved the Shelbys I’ve seen(ie. the ’08 GT500KR and the Cobra), but others not so much, and if you ask me, I think the DeLorean is still the king of the bare metal look.
May 15, 2009 at 2:21 pm
It’s getting more popular now because chroming your car used to be illegal in the UAE, it was recently unbanned so yea…
May 15, 2009 at 1:12 pm
chrome car but no chrome rims. i like copper better. i saw a 69 impala at a local car show. and it was pearl white with copper engine parts and copper daytons. it was soooooooooooooooooooo nice. after that i fell in love with oldskool palas. thats the only chev i like though.
and southernguy i think your right, i saw chrome choppers a while ago and then a year after i saw the chrome shelby concept. and im pretty sure after that people started getting it done in custom cars.
May 15, 2009 at 1:01 pm
The way I see it, if someone wants to chrome their car that’s just fine. It’s just like getting your car painted bright orange or whatever.
But I think chrome cars need black wheels. They’d look better that way.
May 15, 2009 at 11:05 am
The first “chrome” car I can remember of is the early Mercedes racing cars. They left the polished panels without paint (giving the “chrome” look) to save on weight, and from there on silver has been Mercedes signature color.
May 15, 2009 at 10:18 am
Chrome / polished cars have been around for quite some time now, and motorcycles too as you mentioned SouthernGuy. These 2 examples, along with the Merc from jalopnik, look absolutely FOUL!
May 15, 2009 at 9:39 am
im not sure if this is true but i think custom motorcycles were the first to have chrome sheet metal, i’ve seen custom choppers and motorcycles with chrome gas tanks and fenders way before i heard about people doing it to cars, but im not sure if they stole the idea from motorcycles or if its the other way around, not sure
May 15, 2009 at 9:33 am
No chrome, but a gold caddy and lexus (a 90′s one at that)
