Laurel Hill Tunnel
By Ben Schaffer
The Real JDM
While enclosed wind tunnels have been around since 1871, there are many problems that arise from trying to test a car in a wind tunnel. The only way to truly solve all these problems would be to physically move the car over an actual driving surface in a place where the air is perfectly still and controlled. A place like an actual tunnel with sealed ends. A place like the Laurel Hill Tunnel. Continue reading after the jump!

Information about the Laurel Hill Tunnel is extremely limited. It was originally part of Pennsylvania’s Turnpike but was abandoned after the Turnpike was re-routed. Recently Chip Ganassi Racing has turned it into every aerodynamicist’s wet dream. You can find all the known details at Racecar Engineering’s website, but the key facts are that the tunnel is nearly a mile long and is currently used primarily for Nascar testing. The tunnel has turntables at each end to allow the car to minimize downtime. Very cool stuff.

Would be an awsome test spot.. would be nicer if it was a little longer though to help with long distance high speed testing in whatever car desides to take it on. Still a cool peice or real estate to get your hands on.

I want to build a mansion atop the hill and connect its cavernous lair to this.

Looks like a military installation of some kind. I live about 100 miles from the closed turnpike and always wanted to go up and look around at it, I never knew they turned one of the tunnels into a testing area like that. Interesting.
