13B-Swapped Sleeper Bug

By Speedhunters

Car Culture At Large

Earlier this month when I was at the Bug-In event at Autoclub Speedway, I found myself spending a lot of time wandering through the staging lanes looking over all the cars that came out to for the drags. As you saw during my Bug-In event coverage, there was a wide variety of VW’s there, ranging from lightly modified daily drivers to VW-powered rail dragsters.

With that said, there was one car I saw that really threw me off. From a distance, this oval-window Bug looked just like any other rust-covered project car, but as I got closer I saw that the engine was bit different than your average Volkswagen flat-four. Finally, I got close enough to find out that this mystery engine was in fact a naturally aspirated Mazda 13B rotary engine. Continue reading at Speedhunters

Playing Through: Amazing Driver Owns the Grid!

By John Coyle

Deputy Editor

During a spec series, drivers really get a chance to demonstrate their skills. And in this clip from a Lotus Trophy Race, Aussie motor journalist Dean Evans proves he knows what the hell he’s doing. Big time. After starting way at the back of the grid, this maestro proceeds to rip through the pack like the other machines are parked, and it’s just magnificent to behold. Watch for the part where he passes three cars in one fell swoop.

Calling All Units!

By Chris Borrelli

Chris Borrelli

We have all heard stories where some guy buys a Ford Crown Victoria and starts acting like a cop. I hate cop impersonators, especially because they give the Ford Crown Victoria, one of my favorite cars, a bad name. Anyway, Fred Heitzman did just that, but what makes his story so unique is that after pulling some woman over, he called for back up. Read the full story at 10tv news.

Smoking Section: Carport Burnout!

By John Coyle

Deputy Editor

Maybe I’m completely delusional—it’s not a bad first guess under any circumstances—but I find the whole idea of doing a burnout in your carport to totally hilarious. I mean, I love burnouts as much as the next gearhead, but I don’t think I want tire smoke pouring all over things that aren’t attached to my car. This seems more like the kind of stunt you’d want to pull in, say, your buddy’s carport as payback. But I guess it takes all types to make the world go round, and it sure looks like the dude behind the wheel is having a good time in this clip.

Stupid is as Stupid Does

By John Coyle

Deputy Editor

So the name of this clip is “Stupid Driver,” and when I started watching it, I expected some jack-ass to do something—you guessed it!—stupid and bash up his ride. But instead, it’s basically just a clip of some guys having a good time in a parking lot. And while the driver might be going a little fast for the space, he never seems out of control, and it doesn’t look like he’s putting any innocent people in danger. So what exactly makes this driver stupid? Well, let’s just say that if you need someone to tell you it’s a bad idea to hit yourself on the head with a shovel, you might not be the sharpest tool in the shed.

I guess it’s not terribly surprising at this point, but… Dunno what to say, really. Read the story at Reuters and then let us know what you think!
