Lamborghini LP 560-4. Hold the Ice.

By John Coyle

Deputy Editor

Performance figures are one thing, but if you’ve ever gotten the chance to drive a Gallardo, you know numbers don’t mean jack once you pound the gas. Between getting knocked back in your seat and the music of the howling V10, even sexy arithmetic seems about as exciting as Friday night at the Old Country Buffet. Seriously, these babies launch like scalded cheetahs! But as quick as they are, this clip shows why they don’t race Gallardos against Zambonis. To be honest, I was  hoping for a little more drift action, but it’s still pretty cool to see this Raging Bull spinning its wheels.

Mods On The Cheap

By Brett Powers

As you may know I recently bought a ’98 Pontiac Grand Prix GTP for $800. I left the car mostly stock for a long while, but the idea of having a little supercharger whine finlly got the best of me.

I recently went to a swap meet nearby and picked up a Spectre cone filter for $5. Soon after returning home, I decided it was time to play a little with the GTP. I removed the stock airbox and hose clamped the filter for the time being until I can build my own cold air intake. Soon after getting all of this complete, I took the car for a drive and discovered the biggest holdup on my car was the stock airbox—it wasn’t getting the proper amount of air to enjoy all of the possibilities! The car had gone from “ho hum” to “yahoo!” with only five dollars!

Now that the temperature has risen and the snow is long gone, I will be looking to do much more work on my vehicles, and look forward to doing many more things to the GTP. Hopefully it will all be done on the cheap, modding the car correctly and keeping the car running safely the entire time. How about you? Have you ever made a modification on the cheap? What was it and what did you do?

Hood Off, Hammer Down

By Jen Dunnaway

This is, hands down, the best part of a project–the first time you’re able to take the car for a spin under its own power. Chris and I fired up the ’66 Impala for the first time last night on its completely rebuilt 383 stroker, then took it out and terrorized the neighborhood for a bit. Don’t you just love hearing an engine that you’ve had completely and utterly apart actually fire back to life? Check out its first drive below, and click here watch some of the break-in and carb tuning. Thanks a mil to John from Autosport, who was a total rock star for coming over after work to help!

Gumball 3000 Does D1GP!

By John Coyle

Deputy Editor

So there aren’t any examples of gratuitous law-breaking, crashes, or police in this clip, but I can assure you it’s Gumball related. When the rally was passing through Anaheim, the contenders stopped by the D1GP and did a slow parade for the fans. Fortunately, StreetFire was there to get it on tape. While there’s obviously a grip of exotics—including an XJ220!—one car that’s conspicuously absent is Richard Rawlings’ Escalade-powered, breakdown-prone ’78 Chevy Caprice. It’s apparently giving him a hell of a time, just like it did on Bullrun last year.

Camaro Wins the Battle Royale on CarDomain

Man, this week’s Showroom Showdownwas close! The Challenger hung in there to the bitter end. Really, it’s almost too close to call, but I’m gonna call it for the Camaro anyway. But the Mopar guys should feel pretty good (the Mustang and the Genesis Coupe got trounced). Oh, and the discussion was great, too. I really liked the comments by 02sierraWT, StickShiftRick and 95BlckFirebird. Stay tuned for another Showroom Showdown next week!

The Wald R35 GT-R Is Growing On Me

By Ben Schaffer

The Real JDM

I knew when I first saw the Wald GT-R that it was something unique. Whether uniqueness was good or bad is something that only time can tell. Fortunately time has been kind to the Wald GT-R and the car actually looks better to me now than it did 6 months ago. I’m still not a fan of the rear over fenders and a few other small details, but overall I think they did quite well. With many tuners afraid of taking on a full front bumper design for the GT-R, Wald took a gamble and came out with something respectable and of good quality. Continue reading at The Real JDM.
