Chevy Corvette vs. Ford Shelby GT500: Which Would You Choose?

By Rob Einaudi

Editor-in-Chief

Normally I try to stick with the same number of seats for Showroom Showdown match-ups, but I couldn’t figure out what to put up against the Shelby GT500. I couldn’t figure out what to put up against the base Corvette, either. So here goes. The Shelby GT500 has a supercharged 5.4 liter V8 that puts out 540 hp, while the Vette has a naturally aspirated 6.2 liter V8 that puts out 430 hp. The Shelby weighs 3,924 pounds while the Vette weighs 3,217 pounds. Both are available with a 6 speed manual and come in just south of $50k. Which would you choose?

I would have to go with the Stang over the Vette. Not just because I’m a blue oval man. But for the simple fact that the vette has moved out of the hands of the common person. While you can still go to ford and buy a base stock V6 all the way up to the GT500KR/SS. But try to buy a base line Vette for under $25k.LOL!! But for the price of a vette you can buy a Vette eater! that you can bring 3 friends along with to the track (AKA Pit krew) and have goobs of HP!
This is like pitting a Porshe against a VW.

CORVETTE! there are so many videos on the net showing the Z06 spanking the GT500. I love Chevrolet but thats not why i decided to go Corvette. The GT500 would satisfy me quite well. But i do not want to get on the interstate and some Z06 embarrass me in front of my girl. I want to be the guy in the Corvette who cruises the interstate looking for fords to run down. At first i wanted them to compare the ZR1 to the GT500 because me and a good friend always argue about which one is better. But then i realized why they did not do this. The ZR1 would rape this GT500. in all aspects. think about it. the Z06 whipped it and the ZR1 is better then the Z06. Also when you think about ZR1 you think about the Chevrolet that is in every magazine being compared to Ferarris because its so damn fast. Corvette final answer.

first off eveybody has their opinions and taste so im not going to put down anybody that would prefer the GT500 because they are both bad ass cars, but for the people picking the GT500 just because of performance yall must not be doing the math, i did the math with HP to weight ratio, the mustang has 7.26 HP per pound, the vette on the oher hand has 7.48 HP per pound, now i know thats not much of a difference to feel but you have to relaize that the vette and A LOT more aerodynamic than the stang so less drag, so jsut because its the base vette don’t mean it would lose in a drag race, plus the vette has a lot better handling and braking, really the only thing the stang has over the vette is it has 2 rear seats which ain’t much room anyways, now like i said i know everybody has their own opinion and i don’t get mad if some people disagree with me but some people not all people are just seeing the word “base corvette” and basically assuming that the stang would beat the base vette in a race, also you got to look at gear ratios in the rear end also, im not sure what the ratios are in the 2 cars but just my point is HP isn’t everything in a straight up race

Jun 5, 2009 at 11:38 am

Hmmm, i like the GT500, and i like the Vette. but i would have to say, the 540 hp mustang would be my choice over the base model. i perefer the classic muscle styling. And the Stang would own hold its own over a base. but if it was anything but a base model corvette, the mustang would be TOAST!

GT500 I Like Corvette’s too but id take the GT500 Before the vette.

Jun 5, 2009 at 11:14 am

is a base vette supposed to be slow or something?? KR vs Z06?? a base vette would own a KR. a vette would kill a mustang in every performance category. a live axle against an irs??? this isnt even a comparison. the new mustangs look great, perform even better, and finally have halfway decent interior quality. but they’re not vette fighters.

Jun 5, 2009 at 9:33 am

Alright to all u ford lovers, its just science Corvette and Chevy is better I mean don’t get me wrong I love the 4 seats and how the mustangs body style has changed dramatically over the years but if you where to compare a high end mustang v8 shelby gt500, super snake or any variation to a Z06 or ZR1 vette it doesn’t quite compare I think that the person who created this blog should of compared the stang to a new Chevy Camaro hennesy or Dodge challenger srt8 that might of been a more fair battle. I know im still gonna get shit by all the people who love the mustang but common think about.

GT500.

The Corvette is like Michael Phelps, lean and fast. The Shelby is more like Jason Statham in a blue tux, mean and in-your-face.

Since its re-introduction with the ‘84 model, the ‘Vette is/was built from the ground up as a race car for the street. The Shelby, on the other hand, is essentially a rebuild of a fairly vanilla street car, and has always been. For all intents and purposes, the Shelby represents what the CarDomain community represents; taking a less-than-optimal car and making it more special with sweat and vision.

That said, no one here is saying that the Corvette isn’t a great car. Yes, choosing the GT500 may be more a matter of personal taste than a head-to-head performance issue. Yet it appears to be the ‘Vette supporters that are childishly calling the people who like the ‘Stang “dumb” and “stupid”, as if people aren’t allowed to like the Mustang for what it is. Why is the argument “it’s just another Mustang” such a valid point for the non-fans when the ‘Vette is, truly, just another Corvette?

That’s my 2 cents. Your mileage may vary

BIG4GALANT99
Jun 5, 2009 at 7:27 am

ok, first- if youre gona compare base models you shoulda put the vette up against a v6 tang. you comparing apples to oranges here.
second- a mustang is a mustang. spend 50k on it if you want but everyones gona look at it and say “theres another mustang” a factory gt with an intake and a nos kit could run with you.
third- chevrolet is owned by the government and fords are built in mexico. both are a sorry excuse for a domestic product.
last- go with the vetted. more prestige, more sexyness, more potential.

The Vette ofc.

pttransamdriver
Jun 5, 2009 at 6:28 am

I honestly CANNOT believe all the people that picked the Mustang!!! this isn’t even fair to the mustang, the vette wins in ALL aspects!!!
-(watch tmac407’s video link to edmunds review)- they put a stock Z06 against the GT500KR,
the Vette dominates on:
-Power (I say that because both engines “naturally aspirated” the LS7 Kills the ford)
-0-60 times
-1/4 mile times
-handling (skid-pad, breaking, acceleration)
-quality (independent F/R suspension)
-Gas milage
-looks
-”bang for the buck”
-Driving experience
—- VETTE, NO CONTEST!!! —

GT500 the looks the power and the fact that u dont have to be super rich to have even a base model i just think the corvette has changed so little in the past 250 years or so thye havent changed it completely they still have the same body style but have swtiched the headlights and rims and stuff they keep the obdy but r moving the engine aorund makin a bigger more hp engine i jsut think the corvette is due to a wohle new style change so GT500 on this

cbeech316
Jun 5, 2009 at 5:24 am

And Vettes are ugly and all look exactly the same pretty much for the last like 15 years or so, a Mustang has just always had a BIG AGGRESSIVE MEAN LOOK for along time now,,,based on horsepower and looks combined, Shelby Mustang! To borrow part of “tmac407″ ’s comment, “Your an idiot to take a” Corvette “over a” Mustang, like I said thats only part of his comments. Mustang all the way!

FusionPower
Jun 4, 2009 at 10:22 pm

Shelby hands down. The raw power and sound you get from that engine is unparalleled. You don’t drive a car like this for interior refinements or what it will do through the slalom, it’s all about driving on the edge and putting your skills to the test.

SouthernGuy8503
Jun 4, 2009 at 10:20 pm

tmac is right, the Z06 and GT500KR are a better showdown, the corvette is just better in every way, the vette is 6K cheaper and you get a lot more for your buck, plus the Z06 has a great base with just the 7.0L LS7, the GT500KR already has the supercharger blower and is already tuned and a air intkae kit and exhaust, not much more you can do to it but with the vette you can do even more mods to make it even better, the numbers don’t lie in that vid tmac posted, the people saying “its just a base corvette”, ya its just a base corvette but you put ssupercharger on the 6.2L and thats basically the ZR1 because the ZR1 has the supercharged 6.2L but im sure its other tuning to make it do what the ZR1 can do, to be honest if i had the money, i’d buy the base corvette, put on the supercharger and tune it to perform just like a vette ZR1 for a hell of a lot cheaper than any mustang you can buy including a super snake, so all in all its jsut no comparison, the vette will always be better than a mustang

BlueSapphire7981

I think Tmac407 wins this arguement hands down. The video also speaks for itself. Sorry Ford, but Chevy wins again. Step your game up, or go home!

Jun 4, 2009 at 8:57 pm

The Mustang, no matter how hopped-up the bastard is, is still a sports car at heart. The Corvette has been cracking 14 second quarter miles since the C2, and the Mustang didn’t start doing that until maybe 1995 or so, a time when the Corvette was in the low thirteens. I’ll take a base ‘Vette over the GT500, mainly because it just looks better, handles better, is much lighter, still gets nearly 30 miles per gallon, and probably costs less to maintain, since there’s less to go wrong with it, without having a blower and all. Hell, insurance might even cost less, since it has less power and there isn’t a fancy supercharger raising the insurance claim costs.

FordRacer1989
Jun 4, 2009 at 7:29 pm

The GT500. The Vette’s good. But not comparable to the Stang. Even if you compare the SS Camaro to a GT. The GT is only .1 seconds slower in the 0-60. With 100+ horsepower disadvantage. Ford did it first and are still doing it right.

base vette against GT500…id have to say the ford!

Tedthepunk
Jun 4, 2009 at 5:52 pm

I’m not even a Ford Guy and I’d pick the Shelby, It’s a Shelby for one, and for two it’d probably be more fun to drive and throw around. But this is comparing a Muscle Car to a Sports car… Two different cars to me..

bb256
Jun 4, 2009 at 4:35 pm

well one really couldn’t say considering this is an unfair match up. I mean, hell, I’ve seen a v8 grand cherokee laredo that was only slightly modified(no where near as wicked as the gt500 motor) race against a stock base model mustang v8 and win. You really can’t choose. If it were a fair match between plain jane mustang v8 and a stock vette, I’d say vette.

GT500. It’s only a base ‘vette. If it were the ZR1, it’d be another story. Unless you put the ZR1 against a Ford GT, then I’d go with the GT, but unfortunately, Ford doesn’t make that anymore.

Bergy, I meant no disrespect to your family or your father in specific. If you and he know Corvettes thats excellent. I contend there is a difference between a Corvette Purist, or Corvette club member (your family would fit into those two categories) and just the average Corvette owner. My generalizations were based on the latter. I agree there are a lot of people that know and appreciate the legacy that is the Corvette. However, you have to admit there is a HIGH number of Corvette owners that just buy one to have one. Those dopes wouldn’t ever find their way to a car show or car club because they don’t speak the language, let alone know their own cars. I think thats a common problem you’ll find in many other high-end car owners. i.e. Porsche, Lexus, etc.

Well I guess you would have to put a base model Chevy to a top end Ford. The weight of the vehicle and it’s low suspention matters as well. I would prefer a top end Chevy any day.

For everyone who says that the Corvette is a rich-white mans car or its a mid life crisis car and that the people who own them dont know anything about the, YOU are all WRONG. I have literally grown up with Corvettes ever since I was born. My dad had three vettes b4 I was born and he was by no means rich nor was he in a mid life crisis. He was, and still is a blue collar American worker who works all day to bring home the bacon. My dad actually sold 2 of the vettes to buy us a new house and a furiniture. And all of the people that I know who own a vette know a great deal about vettes and their history. There may be some people out there that fit your discriptions, but if you know the true Corvette crowd, you will find that the Corvette community ranges from teenagers to old folks, blacks, hispanic, and whites, the rich and the poor.

you know all the people on here mouthing fords v8, fyi my 3.8 95 mustsang keeps up with a 305 92 camaro and handles 5 times better. so just think if i had the 4.6 or 5.0, no contest for a vette. so obviously imma go GT500, not to be mean but ford had the first V8 and have had more time to perfect it so there for the performace, relibilty and the gas milage aspect of the ford v8 is much better then chevy’s.

Chris Bicknell
Jun 4, 2009 at 8:19 am

Is there really any question here? Corvette all the way! The Corvette has superior suspension, brakes and overall handling. Don’t get me wrong, I like the Mustang but it will never compare to the Corvette in my opinion no matter how much HP to pack into it.

troutster52
Jun 4, 2009 at 8:16 am

I agree with oxfordwhite and toyotagoose. I have to admit I agree with the sentiment about Corvette owners. Its like the wealthy-middle-aged-white man sports car and 9/10 owners just got it because they wanted a sports car and Corvette seemed to fit the bill. I have talked to a lot of guys with Corvettes, and aside from the collectors, most guys wouldn’t even know what you meant if you said L88, LT1 or LS6. People that buy base Mustangs have the same problems but people that buy GT500 Mustangs know exactly what they have and why its amazing. I think the SRT Challenger or new Camaro SS or Z28 would have been a close comparison.Although the Corvette may handle a little better, the GT500 is a raw muscle car. As for the comment about Corvette being a factory race car, although that may be the case in terms of specs, I have seen a lot more 5.0 or 4.6 Mustangs on a drag or road track than I have seen any Corvettes at either place.

phattacorider
Jun 4, 2009 at 6:50 am

This one is easy, the GT500. First of all it weighs more. Sure it doesn’t help for performance, but it does help in a collision. A heavier automobile can absorb impact better than a lighter vehicle so the driver doesn’t have to take so much impact. Second, it’s a 4 seater so it’s more practical socially and for family. Third, I don’t take these Showroom Showdowns by means of giving strictly performance purposes to the vehicle. I mean, who’s going to take either of these cars to their full potential on city streets or highways where it’s not even safe or legal to drive them that way? Might as well find other things! The only thing I will give the Corvette over the Mustang is mileage.

If I wanted a DD, it’d be the GT500. It’s a much more livable car. Comfy, smoother ride, etc. Plus you can be a mean highway monster, simple pulley + tune and you’re good to go.

The corvette is just such a true sports car though. Where it lacks the raw power its handling with the Z51 package is par-none (not really, but way over that of a GT500) Much more so there are very simple F/I systems that can be put on the LS3 to make it stronger than a GT500. If I wanted a car to take out every now and again and to go to the track in (not the dragstrip) it’d be the vette. Lowest curb weight of most domestic performance cars, that’s the one thing I HATE about all new sports/pony cars, they’re all so damn heavy for what they are. I mean FFS. the challenger is over 2 tons. the camaro comes dangerously close to it. The mustang is the lightest and is STILL an awful boat compared to things like a corvette/370Z.

SonicBlew04
Jun 4, 2009 at 6:00 am

I’d take the GT500…

As for everyone talking about the Z06 vs. the GT500KR

The Z06 wins out in every performance aspect.
0-60
1/4 Mile
Breaking
Handling

Even though the Z06 comes stock with 505 and the KR comes with 540, the stock tires on the KR are too skinny to handle the HP the car puts out and offers zero traction.

If Ford offers a better stock rear suspension, the Z06 wouldnt stand a chance.

I still pick the GT500 though. I don’t know why, but everytime I see someone getting out of a Corvette, I get a douche bag, I’m better than you vibe. No offense. Most people on this Web site are pretty cool, but you know the people I’m talking about.

1992CaddyDeville
Jun 4, 2009 at 5:53 am

Corvette!!!!

This one is not even a contest. I drove both cars personally and the mustang is a nice car, but the Corvette is a nice race-car! Dont get me wrong, the ford did improve the stang for 2010, but it is no match to any Corvette built. The C6 Vette is a fast car with all of the handling is superb, it is a true sports car, the Chevy V8 is the best made, and this list can go on and on… The stang has a live rear axel which kills handeling, and it is too refined so people who cannot handle a real sports car will buy the stang.

People just look at the weight and horsepower when they compare these two cars, but it is way more than that! Go test drive both of them, then speak!

Corvette all the way!

Corvette.
It’s a true sports car, y’know?

The LS7 has a dry-sump oiling system designed to keep the engine fully lubricated during the high cornering loads. An engine compartment-mounted 8-quart reservoir delivers oil at a constant pressure to a conventional-style oil pump pick-up at the bottom of the engine. The large-capacity reservoir, combined with a high efficiency air-to-oil cooler, provides necessary engine oil cooling under the demands of the engine’s power output. The 2006 Corvette Z06 is one of just a handful of production vehicles, and the only production Corvette, to ever incorporate such a high-performance oiling system.

The best bang for your buck would be the Corvette Z06. I’ve read a lot on the corvettes and especially the Z06 and the numbers don’t lie. Even Tanner Foust drove one on his show (Super Cars Exposed), and these cars by far are the fastest production American made car. Dodge and Ford can’t match what GM is packing into these beasts. I myself being a (Bowtie) owner, would have to go w/ the Corvette Z06 hands down. The vette may be more on the expensive side of things, but the history of the Corvette also speaks for itself. I was never really impressed w/ anything Ford makes, the only exception would be the Ford GT. The Ford GT is a Super Car all in its own relm, and has much racing history, especially the 24hrs of Le Mans. Its also has a starting book value of over $100.000. Mustangs are really nice cars, but haven’t stepped their game up enough to pursude me over to their side. For anyone who knows or understands power-to-weight ratio, lighter is generally faster. Also the handling of the Corvette is going to be more responsive, smoother and allow for it to take turns faster and tighter than the Mustang. I also find that people seem to think of a Corvette as a sports car rather than a muscle car. In fact the corvette is as much as a muscle car as it is a sports car. The same can be said about the Mustang being a sports car. I would take the time to drive both vehicles and compare the pros and cons, rather than just making assumptions about either vehicles.

tough one really I like both, but the Base Vette doesnt do it for me, if it was the Z06 or the ZR1 then I’d reconcider but I’ve always liked the older GT500’s and the Cobra models so the GT500 will have to do it for me, plus its more powerful than previous versions. That doesnt mean I don’t like the Vette, its still an amazingly sexy car regardless. but those Extra Seats might come in handy someday =)

Good comparo! We all know the Z-06 is just too much for the GT-500, but it also costs quite a bit more. The fact is, both these cars offer a lot of fun to the consumer. The Vette’s more track ready well the GT-500 is ready to hit the drag strip. However, if looking for supercar-like numbers, both can be tuned to make great power as well as handle great. There are twin-turbo kits available for the C6 and a limitless amount of parts available for the GT-500. Personally, I would take the GT-500 because it’s just bad ass! No I can’t make the numbers at a local SCCA event that I could with the C6, but driving around town in this heart-pulsing V8 rumbling at the touch of my foot just sounds too damn fun! GT-500, but again, good comparison Rob!

While I would normally have to say ‘Vette, there’s just something really cool about the new GT500 that I just love. The lines and look of it are just so mean and aggressive looking. Plus with all of that power and old-school touches (and handling) really make the ‘Stang a muscle car and my choice for this showdown.

The Shelby FTW! I’m in sales at a Ford/Mercury dealership and have driven and sold a few of these Shelby GT500’s. They really are a bad-ass ride. Don’t knock it until you get to drive one. I have also driven the Vettes across the street at our Chevy store. Also have driven the G8’s at our Buick, Pontiac, GMC store and I gotta say that out of all of the cars I have driven at all 3 of our stores, the Mustang Shelby GT 500 gets my vote hands down.

I love both cars, but I have strong loyalty to anything Shelby. The original Shelby was built to spank Vettes, and even though it might not handle as well, I have no doubt that the new GT500 can knock the pants off a Corvette in at least a few catagories.

haha hmm Ive actually that about this before I mean botom line super-esque car or top of the line 4,000 pound of american kickass?? hmm haha its a tough question yes stangs are common but not this kind, the stang also has more room for mods and I could see making it look like a regular mustang and racing someone and gettin mad cash of of people who dont know, but at the same time corvettes have an almost invincable appearance to the average driver who doesnt know its not a zr1 idk ahhh vette has higher resale but id say the mustang [:

MiamiMiataGroup
Jun 3, 2009 at 5:01 pm

CORVETTE ANY DAY everybody has a tired mustang, Mustangs are heavy and sluggish next to a vette. While FORD needs to put a supercharger in any Mustang if they want 2 make a bit over 300 HORSES or any kind of power, Chevy has shown they can make a naturally aspirated beast to take the best exotics in the world same can’t be said for the tired Horse in the mustang. The Mustang interior is as ugly as a retro car can be, Squarish and rough is an interior borrowed from the Hummer H2 shame on you FORD. (ford) Fault or Repair Daily.

SouthernGuy8503
Jun 3, 2009 at 4:58 pm

Dynasty – your right but this showdown is between a stock corvette base model and a stock msutang GT500, plus jsut so you know the ZR1 is just the base vette with a supercharger, they both use the same 6.2 Liter, the Z06 is a 7.0 Liter, so if your going to put $6,000 into the GT500 then why not do the same with the Vette, not sure how much the supercharger off a ZR! would be but its less than $6,000 im sure and with the extra money you can add whatever else, plus the GT500 is 700 pounds heavier that it has to make up for, im not disagreeing with your opinion at all but my point is if your going to put $6K into the gt500 then why not do the same to the vette and see what happens and like i said the showdowns are for the cars stock, not anything else added or done to them, like i said you are right but just not being fair if you don’t put the same money into the vette to ya know? lol

GT500 For the win! Besides all I see driving Corvettes is balding old men with a mid-life crisis.

DynastySign27
Jun 3, 2009 at 4:46 pm

I would rather have a GT500 than a Z06 or ZR-1 because with a $6,000 twin screw the GT500 would beat the ZR-1 by half a second on the 1/4 mile.

TOPlamborghini
Jun 3, 2009 at 4:39 pm

lol rob, are u serious?
This is an easy Showroom Showdown.
The corvette beats a mustang any day!
The corvette looks better, theyre rarer than the common stang. And its lighter.
The vette is also known for being able to keep up with some super cars.
Whereas the stang? can barely beat a civic.

No ifs, ands, or buts, has to be the ‘Vette. The ‘Vette is a world car. Has won more races at home and over seas. It retains and will retain its value over time. I have driven both and even though the ‘Stang has a much nicer interior than it use to, it still has a bit of a low quality feel. Driving both, ‘Vette handles like a precise Machine, the ‘Stange like a car. I do love the sound of the ‘Stange though.

Certainly the corvette. It’s much more refined, MUCH lighter, better suspension setup, brake setup and acceleration is up there with the mustang. I was in the same boat for deciding between the two but the corvette was a clear winner when i test drove both.

And Contrary to a previous comment, i see too see a lot of girls driving mustangs… but thats just my perception. Great but different cars.

The Mustang has the 700 extra pounds but has the higher HP. I dunno, Thats a hard choice. I’m going with the Corvette. I’m a Chevy fan.

SouthernGuy8503
Jun 3, 2009 at 11:41 am

Corvette, thats so easy, the GT500 might have 100 more HP but its also 700 more pounds so since its lighter you don’t need as mugh HP and Torque to go as fast, also its no way you can get any mustang to handle like a corvette
