Save A Clunker: '86 Z28 on eBay

By Jen Dunnaway

Editor

Okay, folks: if there are any Reagan-era clunkers on your automotive wish list, now’s the time to snap them up. With the Cash for Clunkers bill having passed in Congress yesterday, 1985-and-newer vehicles are in even greater jeopardy of being crushed than they were during the scrap-metal price spike of couple years ago–and each of these cars, no matter how much of a heap, is automatically going to be worth at least 3500 bucks to the seller if that seller happens to be in the market for a new vehicle. So it’s time to pony up: if you’ve ever been tempted to give someone a few thousand dollars not to crush their car, now’s the time to do it. Over the next few weeks, we’ll be featuring at-risk rides in the blog that are available for sale–you can save them. For the inaugural Save A Clunker post, I picked this gorgeous third-gen Camaro for sale in Philadelphia. Being an ’86, it’s right on the cusp of vehicle demographic affected by the legislation. And, perhaps more ominously, check out the Buy It Now price. Yep, if this ride’s final sale price falls short of the magic number, it might very well be worth the seller’s while to crush it, take the government voucher, and slap a down payment on a new Camaro. So someone, please save it–view the auction here. And while you’re thinking about it, swing by the SEMA site for info on getting in touch with your legislators (the Senate still needs to approve the bill before Cash For Clunkers is signed into law) and to locate elected officials by state who are sympathetic to the car enthusiast community.

So my POS 89′ Fleetwood, I could never even get a $600 for is worth $3,500 over night?

NOPE! Not really.
Maybe to the Dealer I would be dumb enough to give it to.

Example,

Say a nice Camero 500hp goes for $40,000, don’t you think you could talk them down to $37,000 with out a trade?; and you think you could just deduct your Pyle from that too. You think? I don’t. “I really doubt they would” Maybe take it at full price, then deduct your POS.

It’s called playing the numbers. Hey and guess what you just gave them your car for nothing, but you walk away thinking they gave you a killer deal. ?!?!?

This might help some poor smucks to get there first new KIA, but too most of us it’s not going to mien squat. Until you find that one car you’ve always wanted to fix up, or a cool winter car, but the “douche bag” that has it wants $3,500 for something that should be $1,000.

I agree that we should get the Sh!t Pyle’s off the road but I’m not so sure this is the rite way.

Thank the Koreans’ for the KIA huh? BAD CREDIT? NO CREDIT? If you have a job, a $199 down, $150 a month, and your willing to get @SS raped over 5years, You too can buy a “NEW CAR”

The thing is (and I have to disagree with troutster52), CFC WON’T hone in on certain makes or models), cars crushed will vary greatly. My main point is that demographically, cars people who have their cars scrapped average about 12-15 years old. True classics will be mostly spared.

I agree with GT Wildfire. They aren’t outlawing old cars, just giving new car buyers incentive to get rid of the beater. 98 percent of the cars crushed in this program will be Chevy Caprice and Ford LTD style land yachts. Although those are fun to drive (if you like obscene body roll, pimpy crushed velvet seats and the sloppiest steering possible) I for one won’t miss them. People that have IROCs, Fox Mustangs, etc will hold onto them. Are there any other cool fuel hog cars from the 75-89 era anyway? Aside from some trucks (which there are plenty of to go around) the collector cars won’t slip through the cracks. People that have them, love them.

Oh and a buy it now price of $3500? Obviously that price is set to make a point, but it would really make two points if it sold. The second that the buyer’s an idiot.

There are two sides to CFC though. Yeah, some older rides will get scrapped, but getting 3500 towards a new car should help out the auto industry – and the industry IS in trouble isn’t it? – so why is the importance of that ignored here in the CD Blog?

If you think CFC will end up crushing everything old, or even nearly everything old… you’re sadly mistaken. A helluvalota people DON’T BUY NEW CARS, and most new car buyers don’t have rides that date back to the mid-80′s.

I find the shock ‘n awe about this to be a ridiculous overreaction, and not one supported by brilliant conclusions

I find the cash for a klunkers a great idea… for the car salesmen and the ppl who can afford the down payment and the monthly bill tht can exceed my rent bill, and lets not get started on the insurance like we dont owe enough money to the government. and what about all those retired ppl who like to rebuild these glorious cars to their amazing and true conditions? are they supposed to sit back and say well their goes my hobby think i’ll just rollout a ball of yarn screw that bill I agree with anyone saying we should band together and fight!

Well, okay, guess I jumped the gun. Read it over, does only cover new cars, forget it. Fuck that bill.

Well, to be honest, I have a 92 Corsica, and to be honest, I could buy 2 or 3 ’92-’95 Honda Civic’s with one of those $3,500 vouchers. I know this sounds out there, but, they’re also not saying they’re gonna barge into your yard and pull all your 85 and up cars, guys, and it’s only for one year once it’s signed. It also doesn’t say you have to buy a new car. You can still buy other 90′s cars, provided they’re more economical.

Besides, the gas crisis ruined all our good muscle cars, save maybe the GM’s and Ford’s, but if you all remember the classic “K-Car Era”, do you really all want to go back to driving 60 horsepower Geo Metro’s because we can’t afford to drive?

And your only other option to band together, start combining performance with economy. It’s possible, just think.

Fuck obama and all these congress tards for pretty much “making” people obligated to buy new vehicles. These vehicles are prob already payed off, but the gov’t is trying its hardest to “save” the ailing americans and add another debt to more americans. Maybe I don’t fully understand the bill, maybe it’s just late and I’m not thinking clearly, but one thing is for sure Obama is running America into the ground even further than we already are. What about all the fox body mustangs, box chevys, regals, camaros? Just crush em for 3500 bucks. I need to start a pull-a-part business right next to one of these scrap yards.

good find. This is an example that needed structural, some friends went through several of them when we were growing up with them. It didn’t bother us then, and it still not much to me (I am a welding unibody fool), but for average populus looking for a hood scoop as the sale, it still is going to extinct alot…

Wow, this is depressing.. I own a rare 84′ Camaro 4cylinder, thank god it has lived a good and mostly pampered life. But for my 91′ Firebird 5-Speed, I’m afraid to sell it now! I honestly see this happening to her if someone else end up owning it…

“Gotta love the Government”

it says vehicles 85 and newer are in jeopardy not pre 85 as far as i know they kind of always were that is cars before then cuz that is what they started considering klunkers and all i know is we need to band together and not let this continue because its screwin with our hobby and its a piece of americana and it just pisses me off and theyll never get any of my rides cuz i dont want a new silverado, camaro,or challenger that bad that im gonna give up my rides that is worth more than what any of those will be not saying i dont like them but thats probably the only newer cars i like right now

My AMC wagon and my IHC rat-rod are both pre-1985, so I’m screwed….but I’m not exactly sure if I would let them crush either of them anyways…..
