Subaru Legacy 2.5 GT vs. Ford Fusion Sport AWD: Which Would You Choose?

By Rob Einaudi

Editor-in-Chief

So you want a sporty AWD sedan for less than $30K? Two good options are the Subaru Legacy 2.5 GT and the Ford Fusion Sport AWD. The Subaru’s 2.5 liter turbo four banger puts out 243 hp while the Ford’s 3.5 liter V6 puts out 263 hp. The Subaru weighs 3,428 pounds while the Ford weighs 3,803 pounds. The Subaru is available with either a 5-speed manual or a 5-speed automatic. The Ford is only available with a 6-speed automatic. Which would you choose?

Biggee72:
I’ve owned three Subarus in the last 20 years and one ford. Bought them all new. $0 in repairs on the Subarus. Two transmissions and $3600 poorer from the Ford…I’ve learned my lesson. My Legacys were made in Indiana. My Ford was made in Canada. If Subaru made a Minivan I would never have bought the Ford.

Would have to say Fusion Sport AWD. Actually drove both. You would gave to go with 2010 Legacy to get some of latest technology like Bluetooth etc. and the 2010 is UGLY. It’s a shame, the 2009 was a nice looking car. The Fusion has better than average reliability and the Subaru only average according to Consumers and JD Power at least. The Japanese may be getting complacent and the domestics trying very hard to build a better product. The 2009 Legacy 3.0 has a nicer ride than the 2010 Fusion Sport but the Legacy is not as much fun to drive. The Fusion Sport would be a blast with a 5 speed or (6 speed) but for many this is not a practical option for a family car. For many the technology available on the Fusion like Sync etc. would clinch the deal. The Fusion will appeal to the younger buyer.

75 percent of Fusions on the road are 2.3, not 3.5 so thats why a lot of the ones on the road are pokey. Although I am more of a Ford fan than a Subaru fan, I love the Legacy and would go for that just because of the stick shift option. No point it carving out the corners if you can’t pound it through the gears, more power or not.

Well I already own a 2007 Impreza so I know Subarus are AWESOME cars. And the Legacy just looks stunning. So I would love to have that.

FORD … the new fusion looks great

Jun 12, 2009 at 6:55 am

This is a easy one, even thought the Fusion looks great, I gotta side with the Subaru. You can’t resist AWD,Boxster engine, and they have been doing this since the dawn of time right?! How many Ford’s came AWD so go with the experts, sorry Ford keep building the muscle car that kept them alive.(another subject for another day)

Subaru… easy. Better looking, it comes in stick. Not as powerful but lighter. And, well, it’s not a Ford :)
I don’t mind fords much, they make sweet trucks but most of their cars are pretty hurting. Al though ford has uped their game quite a bit in the past few years but i’ve always loved the subarus

thats a tough choice, i really like the new ford fusion body style, Ive also liked the Legacy body style but yeah its a pretty old design. but either ones a good choice for a 4 door AWD design, just pick your preference i guess, Mine would be the Ford just because of its awesome looks

racerjim
Jun 11, 2009 at 10:30 pm

Ford. Subaru has been clinging to the same chassis/suspension/drivetrain design for years. That outfit really seems like a one-hit-wonder.

skiman88
Jun 11, 2009 at 3:58 pm

Subaru no doubt ! Aunts 2003 ford just shit out on her before it was even paid off and the warranty is done ( I will NEVER buy a ford ) and for all you who are all about america and think that by buying an american car makes you more of an american, you may wanna research and find that many of fords newer models are being made in MEXICO including the fusion hybrid so there goes that !

Jun 11, 2009 at 3:37 pm

did anyone know that the legacy is also offered with a 6-speed!? the legacy gt spec b has a six speed manual AND upgraded suspension from the standard legacy gt or gt limited. subaru’s been doing it right all along! even if you don’t step up to the spec b there’s a more solid aftermarket support for improvements in all aspects of the car’s performance. on a site where we’re all showing and/or modifying our vehicles i think that would be a valid argument in favor of the subaru. thanks for reading.

SUBARU for sure, sure the Fusion looks ok but the AWD system on the SUBARU is a MONSTER. Ohh and yes FORD’s are made cheap. This is really not a fair comparo just look at the facts the LEGACY is an out going model and is still kickin ass, a brand new 2010 FUSION being made atleast 5 years later still cant keep up…

I may be biased but I say Fusion FTW!

fireball22
Jun 11, 2009 at 1:22 pm

Lovin’ the Fusion. Yeah, I bleed Ford Blue, but it’s a clean and sweet looking design and I’m confident that members of my family would be a little more comfortable riding in the back than with the Subie. But you’re right, a manual tranny would be the perfect touch.

Gosh dang they both look good!! For looks, I like the Ford. For the AWD system, Subaru(duh).

shreff99, I’ll take the rigours of learning how to drive better on a sanctioned road course loooong before I hand over control to some techno-nannies. Rear-wheel drive, near 50/50 balance and traction/stability control that can be completely disengaged is how to do it properly! Learning about Ford’s awesome Revoknuckled deisgn in the latest Focus RS (Europe only), I’m sure Ford put just as much R&D to making their AWD system rock so I don’t doubt you there. But hearing someone who works in Ford saying how much better the Ford might make on question the bias-ness of your comments. Futhermore, claiming how some +3000lb sedan “handles like a dream” makes me question the integrity of the comment, or, at the very least, eludes to the fact that your idea of good handling is rather softcore for some of us folks on here.

Jun 11, 2009 at 7:16 am

I would still choose the Fusion without a doubt in my mind at all! I work for a Ford/Mercury dealership and we also own a Chevy/Subaru dealership across the street. I have driven both vehicles and the Fusion definitely tops the Legacy, stick shift or not. We got our first Fusion Sport 2 weeks ago from the factory, of course we all had to drive it. We took a 35 mph curve at 85 mph and the Fusion stuck right to it. The Fusion Sport’s suspension adjusts with your driving as well as the all-wheel drive system. The all-wheel drive on the Fusion can go front to back, side to side or criss-cross and enables the car to handle like a dream. All kinds of info generated by your driving is sent to the computer of the car and it tells car everything it needs to do to keep the car planted firmly to the ground. Technology is unreal in vehicles these days. The 3.5L putting out 265 hp matches well with the sport suspension and Ford’s Intelligent All-Wheel Drive system.

I’d say the Fusion, the grille is pretty unique, styling is good and Ford’s reputation is better than it has been for many decades, meanwhile it seems like Subaru’s design team were about as adventurous as the Amish… I see it now, Lancaster Jones and the Temple of Yawn…

I have a few buddies of mine that are completely indoctrinated into the VeeDub subculture and even they have been giving props to the latest offerings from Ford. Kudos to them for giving the American market some of their Euro/Aussie flare. (Can I has 4.0L Turbo I6 Falcon now, pls?)

Anywho, I ALWAYS thought the Legacy 2.5GT was awesome and it was a bummer that I didn’t see more people rock that car. Ford’s latest Fusion is quite stunning too.

But, as the caption suggests, the lack of a manual offering IS a deal breaker for me so I’d have to go Subbie.

If I was suggesting this car to someone however and they had no intentions of driving a stick, then I ‘d have to tell ‘em to test drive both as these cars are just too cool (well, as cool as midsize sedans get) and too closely matched for me to say one is superior to the other.

Subaru, but only because I can’t stand the tail lights on the Fusion.

Gregarious
Jun 11, 2009 at 6:28 am

I would have to go with the Subie… even though the Ford is probably the better choice. I’ve been in the 2.5GT wagon and it fucking flies! The Ford’s weight is the only reason I didn’t go with the Ford.

Ill admit the ford looks good and that ford is stepping up their designs lately, but I still would have to go with the manual subaru. Ford says their quality has gone up but subaru has always had it so you wouldnt be taking any chances

C’mon a Crappy Ford V6 over a Subaru Flat-4 EJ25. Do we really need to ask which one you’d pick?

Subaru all the way

carguy1215

If I could have the Subie drivetrain with the Fusion’s looks, that’d be great, but we don’t live in such a perfect world. But in the end, I’d have to go with the Fusion since these cars would be my daily, so I’m not too worried about which one would have the better performance when they’re both similar (AWD, mid-size, sport package)

Subie anyday of the week.

ford makes the weakest sedans ever. i was driving my focus ( parts car for my dads shop) this truck cut me off the other day and i was forced to swerve and my right tire hit the curb and couple hours later my hole shock, strut, spring, tire, rim everything broke.ford makes the best trucks though.
