As some one who's been racing since age 8 under NHRA and IHRA, and is now running a T/F car, I can tell you that the last thing you're going to worry about when you've got an engine fire is shutting down. Not only is your life more important then the car, the safety crews at these tracks are supposed to be trained for this sort of situation. NHRA requires that every car have a battery shut off for door cars so that when things like this happen, safety crews can take care of shutting the car off. The NHRA's main concern has always and will always be the safety of both the drivers and the crews. The crew here did the right thing. You can see at one point some one pulls the power shut off. The extinguishers they're using aren't in car extinguishers they're full size extinguishers. There is no requirement by the NHRA to have a full safety team available for these cars, simply one extinguishers per lane.

For the person who asked about where there was no ERT at the line, if there was an even an ERT present, they were at the finish line. Standard placement of the ERT has always been at the 1320 mark due to the fact that most cars fail close to, or at the line. On the day of a main event, some tracks will have a smaller unit behind the line, but for things like this, if an ERT is present, they're always at the 1320.

Well, nitrous is NOT flammable and the nitrous bottles have an exhaust valve that pops and releases the pressure if it raises above it's limits so NO, a fire won't cause a nitrous bottle to explode (unless the exhaust valve fails) and if the nitrous bottle exploded it would most probably extinguish the fire around it (because of the lack of oxygen)

When a nitrous system backfires is the gasoline that gets on fire, not the nitrous. You people have to stop watching F&F.... NAAAWSS!!!

Seems like the old days, before rules and procedures were implemented to prevent scences like this from happening. This could have gotten real bad and people hurt.

Next time they need to spring $100 and a case of beer and hire a retired firefighter to be on stand-by.
