SW20 MR2 Spider?

I was originally planning on making this part of the “Car Sightings” posts I’m working on, but decided it was strange enough to warrant its own post. I had to do a double take the other day when I saw this SW20 MR2 roadster driving down the street. Now as far as I know Toyota never made a convertible of this generation, so I’m assuming it’s an aftermarket kit of some sort.
Whatever it was, I thought it looked surprisingly decent, and know it would look even better with the top down. Do any of the the Toyota guys know more about this?

Sorry Brad – the Mk2 came in Coupe, T-top and then there were also limited edition runs of the TRD 2000GT and the Mk2 Spider.
Okay, the Spider was actualy a t-top cut down and made into a Spider but it came out of the Toyota Technocraft factory – so, its a factory Spider and not a conversion.
I guess anything that is done after it leaves the factory is a conversion and anything done in the factory is “stock” ?

The mk2 SW20 Spider came in Spider form in 1996 – only approx 88 of these were made ever! Most of these were autos with around 20 or so manual. I’ve picked up a manual. I think one or two of them are turbos but I’d suspect that they were converted.
Here’s mine – I’m going to either drop in a JDM gen3 turbo motor or else a 2GR

that is a 1996 Toyota MR Spider. i got one of those lovely cars in Gran Turismo 2 with almost 400hp to the wheels.

Several coachbuilders do drop-top conversions….I don’t think the price is worth it….but it’s kinda cool, I guess….
