What Did You Do This Weekend?
Bick66
With help from John at Autosport I installed all new bearings and spider gears in the rear end of my ’66 Impala Convertible and got the car back on the road again.
What did you do this weekend?

Let’s see…Friday night, I edged my sidewalk and cleaned up from that. Saturday I spent three hours working in the yard before heading to the cruise at Marley Station about 7:15. Took a bunch of pictures there. It was the sponsoring club’s annual fundraiser, so they suspended the model-year requirement for parking on the lot. A fair number of new Challengers were there, along with more new Camaros than I’d seen up to that point. Left the lot about 9:30 and took a nice nighttime top-down ride before heading home.
Sunday I drove around a bit and took pictures of some older cars parked on the street and in driveways, including a ’79 Z/28 set up for autocross, a ’64 Olds 98 I’d never spotted within a mile of my house and a beautiful ’67 Cadillac Fleetwood that was even closer. Then I got to do more yard work at my mother’s place. Managed to haul away a five-foot holly tree in the back of my Daytona and not get scratched up doing it.
Getting very weary of the daily rain that means I have to mow two lawns every single weekend…

I accidentally broke the trim piece at the top of my driver’s door panel that goes right where you’d put your arm if you drive with one hand on the wheel and one resting on the door like me. Unfortunately, a new one of those comes free with a new door panel, and my car is a special edition. I can’t get one. Junkyard, here I come.

Installed my rear bucket seats that match the front two. This required a custom built frame and rails. The seats do recline, but the sliders have been removed. No real need for sliders in the rear. I also had my lip kit painted flat black to match the painted Seibon hood. This is installed now, just need to plug the fog lights back in. Next will be painting the wheels flat black and adding a red lip to them.

This weekend was the annual family migration 750 miles down to Georgia. Every year when school lets out, my wife n kids go there for 3 weeks. Unfortunately right now my Prix has a bad trans and a dirt-cheap Grand Marquis I just picked up is having all of its brake lines replaced and wasn’t gonna be ready, leaving the Firebird as the only functioning vehicle… but on the eve of the trip I had to replace a vertical lower control arm bushing that was thoroughly toasted. I had to replace it before swapping cars with my sister 75 miles away, who has a brand new Nissan Versa.
-
The disassembly to free up the lower control arm started at light speed. Only 25 minutes passed and I was already at the last bolt to be removed… the vertical bushing bolt. The nut came off with no problem. Kept it on though and tried to knock the bolt upward, Didn’t budge. Took a scissor jack and tried to push up that bolt… the car lifted up!
-
Borrowed a sawzall and grinder from a neighbor. The sawzall had cheap blades and the grinder couldn’t reach into the gaping bearing gap where there used to be rubber. I resorted to using a dremel and went through about 20 stones, grinding the inner bushing sleeve first, then eating away at the bolt. It took about 5 hours. Finally I got close to finishing and broke the bolt with a ball joint fork. The pressout/pressin went quickly and reassembly but I had to go to home depot to get a hardened 4″X1/2″ bolt washers and nuts. By the time I was done and covered in grease I had to go (dirty) 75 miles, swapped cars and came back by 2 am. Got 2 hours sleep then drove to Virginia below D.c. when mercifully my wife took the helm.

when I have a bad day, I don’t mess around lol…

those gears breaking brings “fun” memories. maybe a breakable drive yokeiand a shaft in a cage is/was called for. the rear end shouldn’t by common sense in the chain of strength be the first breaker. +1 for transaxles today. I sanded and painted this weekend, the difference (with pleasure) was having 50psi move the thick primer, rather than the torture of a spray can for small jobs eating the car a month later into metal once good a pile of dust. What is in those xyline aerosols so badly? Anyhoo, It was worth taking longer to setup that the actual chore of painting..

Mopars in the Park car show. Placed 2nd in Comp. Not bad for a pure race car. 1st place was a show/go car.
