Car Celebrates 45 Years of Muscle and Magic

LOS ANGELES (June 22, 2009) – Forty-five years after he introduced the original Ford Mustang, launched at a dramatic press conference at the 1964 New York World’s Fair, auto industry visionary Lee Iacocca today announced a new version of the famous muscle car – the Iacocca Silver 45th Anniversary Edition Ford Mustang – a breathtaking vehicle that utilizes the latest in Ford performance technology with a style and panache that screams, Mustang fastback. Only 45 “2009½” Iacocca Silver Edition Mustangs – all painted a special “Iacocca” chosen silver hue – will be built.

Nearly two years in the making, the Iacocca Silver Edition Mustang is a collaborative effort by Iacocca, designer Michael Leone, and Gaffoglio Family Metalcrafters, the world-class coachbuilding and Design Company in Fountain Valley, Calif. The new business venture is called I Legacy, and it will be in concert with Galpin Ford, the exclusive Ford dealership to offer these Iacocca Silver 45th Anniversary Edition Ford Mustangs to the public.

In a word, the new Iacocca Silver Edition Mustang is stunning. The lines flow organically from front to rear. The hand-crafted piece of rolling art, with its innovations and impact of the fastback design is truly exceptional in every way. With its sunken headlights, slanted grill and low stance, the car gives you “street attitude.”

“Once in a while a car comes along that changes everything, and that was the original Mustang,” said Iacocca.

The Silver Edition Mustang perpetuates the Iacocca mystique.

The car begins life on a 2009 Mustang platform, which is then uniquely modified and coachbuilt. While the exterior fastback design of the Iacocca Silver Mustang is compelling, the mechanical underpinnings are true American muscle. Two power plant options will be offered, a normally-aspirated 4.6-liter Ford V8 rated at 320 horsepower and an optional supercharged version that delivers a head-snapping 400‑horsepower. Both engines are covered by a factory Ford warranty. Drivers will harness the power through a quick-shifting 5-speed manual transmission.

The car’s suspension has been upgraded to keep pace with the power delivery. A Ford Racing Handling Package adds firmer springs and re-valved shock absorbers. A 14-inch Ford Racing Braking Package is optional. All suspension components will be covered under a factory Ford warranty, as well.

Inside the Iacocca Silver Mustang, the interior is resplendent with luxurious touches that highlight the car’s special heritage, including Iacocca Diamond Design leather seats with embroidery stitching, an Iacocca signature dash plaque with serial number, a leather-wrapped steering wheel with “I” badge, and Iacocca-badged aluminum door sill plates.

The cars will initially be revealed and then available at a reception in late July, at Southern California’s Galpin Ford dealership, the world’s largest volume Ford dealer for 19 years, as well as an innovator in the promotion and retail of specialty automobiles. The price is yet to be announced.

The “Father of the Mustang” returns to the legend that started it all.

Well, Galant99, I guess you don’t want to hear about the upcoming Roush 427R Mustang or the Steeda Mustang Q, either. Oh, or the return of the 5.0 in 2011 with an expected 400 hp…

that mustang is bad ass i got a svt eurofocus and i love it. ford really has it together with all the cars. but this mustang is a bad ass mother f——. it has a great power plant and i think it would compete well with the camero. i guess we will see how the retro stang feels with the camero.

Gee, I wonder if Ford will let Lee have one of these without having to return it.

Don’t you think the bigger wheel wells should’ve been on the Rear…and not the front? Thats a design flaw. They should have given the optical illusion to the back…make the back seem bigger….oh well. Nice execution to say the least.

See I like the mustang, but my question is WHY, WHY is it so hard to build what people want? We have to use kits or stick ons, why cant Ford just build like they used to? Build it and they will buy…

I’d have to say yes to this Ford product for sure.

It is good to see a true fastback. Since the car owes a lot of its styling cues to the ‘69/’70 Mustangs I’d like to have seen the designer add the little lip spoiler on the tail. That might have made a very nice nostalgic touch here.

Jun 23, 2009 at 8:31 am

Lee Iacocca was the man and this Mustang is hot. I will say the wheels are too big. I think 18s is about as big as they should be. Hott car though, I’d love one.
Stop complaining about Muscle Cars for every man, blah blah. I understand the muscle car needs to be accessible but this would be more on the lines of a Yenko Camaro or Boss Mustang, and those were the highend optioned ones, not the “muscle car for every man.” Bottom line is making a car like this costs a lot and the price will be reflective of that. Same is true of a Yenko, Shelby, Roush, Lingenfelter, Boss, Nismo, Mugen, RUF, McClaren, AMG, etc. Every fast car has a high dollar alter ego that is aimed at a more selective and affluent audience.

It is a sweet Mustang but here we are again, another car that is not obtainable for the average person. Between the super wealthy driving the cost of the muscle car up to a rediculous price hight to car manufacturers making expensive limited edition cars. So with an expensive price tag and limited numbers on top of that what is the point in advertising it, it even says in the write up that you will need to know someone to even hope to buy one. I guess for the average person you might luck out and atleast beable to own a poster of one.

Is it just me or are the front wheels bigger than the rears? Either way they are just TFB!

Jun 23, 2009 at 5:29 am

That looks so frickin bad. I love the exhaust and the fact that is a true fast back. The tails look like they are more sunk in. I lreally like it and hope to see one driving around on the weekends. I would rather get a Shelby though.

WOW!!!! BADASS!!! Funny thing though…They sure seem to have stayed away from the bad rearend design of the 2010 Mustang…hmmmmm… looks like someone was paying attention to consumer gripes…LOL…I read all the post below and am wondering why the (at least in the pics) the front wheels look bigger than the rear ones…I understand about the bigger wheelwells in front but if you notice I dont think it mentions anything about wheel and tire size in the article (only brake size) that seems funny to me! otherwise this car is flawless!!! They can have my GT in trade…LOL!!!

wtf that shit looks like a mutated camero mustang

The rear window scoops on this mule are not functional. This car is just the mock up unit. No word on if they will be functional on the production model

Go to the website. The wheel difference isn’t…its just an optical illusion. The specs show everything…..

Chevy Guy here<<<< I have to admit. Thats one sexy beast. $60K…not bad considering 45 only will be made. Imagine what that $60K is going to grow to in like about 20 yrs.

Jun 22, 2009 at 8:28 pm

why the heck is the front wheels are this bigger than the rear ones?? and i think the rear should have a spoiler if not then change the exhaust
other than that i love it

wsbob
Jun 22, 2009 at 8:19 pm

It looks like a different car from the profile view. The quarter view of the front makes the hood look longer, and then it looks much more integrated from the side. I like it a lot

ROUSHV6101
Jun 22, 2009 at 7:59 pm

does anyone know if they made those rear window scoops functional or are they fake? for 65,000 i’d like mine to be real lol. but either way i like it wish i could get one but uhh 65,000 and only 45 of em i think im out of luck : )

The Fastback Is my favorite model Of the Mustang Family. I Love the new look. But the Price range sucks though, But I guess it’s worth it since there’s only gonna be 45 Of these beauties made.Guess I better save up!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

pslSATURNdriver
Jun 22, 2009 at 6:15 pm

the front wheelwells are wider than the rear so it makes the front tires look bigger

LedZeppelin
Jun 22, 2009 at 5:46 pm

What a sweet design. I can’t find fault with it anywhere. This thing will be coveted forever. Only 45 units? Ever…?
Even if I had the scratch, the will, and desire, I still wouldn’t be allowed anywhere near it within a 2 mile radius….

To echo Rob Einaudi,,,Wonder what a NotchBack would look like??

The fastback roof/hatch design is sick! I love it all but the exhaust exit

Jun 22, 2009 at 4:34 pm

Look good. could use a little different rear though.

NobiZero
Jun 22, 2009 at 2:07 pm

If they change the rear end a bit, and make those hockey sticks functional vents, like they should be, that’d be one Mustang I probably couldn’t say no to. That fastback roof looks absolutely amazing.

Jun 22, 2009 at 9:47 am

I think the Stang looks good as is, but a true fastback would be nice. I think the designers wanted to model the ‘65 fastbacks as much as possible with the exception of the Mustang II-esque hockey sticks. I also think that they wanted to reduce as much lift as possible produced by the car’s signature roofline. That roof looks alot like an airplane wing if you haven’t noticed already. Having a flat trunk looks like it would redirect the flow a little and reduce lift. I’m no engineer by any means, but it looks like reasonable design obstacle. Anyway, as the owner of a 1st gen Iaccocca designed Stang, congrats to Lee on his accomplishment. Also, a notch would be nice as well.

Looks absolutely amazing! That fastback shape is how they should be made, just what dgaf88 said. What a beautiful creation.

Rob Einaudi
Jun 22, 2009 at 8:59 am

Good question, dgaf88. I’d like to see a notch, too.

dgaf88
Jun 22, 2009 at 8:57 am

Why the fuck didn’t ford make them “true fastbacks” from the factory. I don’t really care for rear bumper or the ground effects and giant wheels but that fastback set up looks sweet.
