Minnesota Back to the 50s Weekend (Part 1)
Neuwerks
One thing that Minnesota is known for is our yearly state fair. It is considered by many to be the largest in the nation, with the grounds itself taking up most of the Falcon Heights community. Inside the fairgrounds, exists a huge network of streets, buildings, and parking areas that are used sporadically during the year for other events needing the space. Most of these buildings were built in the 1950s or earlier, and provide the prefect setting for one of the largest classic car shows in the world.

Perhaps the largest non fair event to be held at the grounds (in fact, it rivals the fair in overall attendance) is that of the Minnesota Street Rod Association’s Back to the 50s weekend. With over 11,000 classic cars from 1964 and earlier, it is the second largest show of this kind in the world. The event attracts thousands of classics from across North America to a state that coats its roads with copious amounts of salt in the winter months.
While the show will be over by the time you read this, I plan on posting up some highlights, along with a gallery showcasing some of the cars that caught my attention. While I live and breath European automobiles, there is something to be said about classic American iron, and the culture that grew up around it!

By all rights it should be a 3 day event.
Every time I go and think I can do it in one day ends up I miss about half of it. You get sidetracked visiting car owners and talking details with the vendors.
Obviously the cars are the ones I grew up with, but the Trucks rule when you see a 50′s GMC 2 ton converted to roll-back to carry their street rod in all custom paint.
By luck a couple days earlier I got a taste of ‘Back to the Fifties’
in Sioux Falls SD to see their ‘Automania’ held downtown on closed off streets. They do this for one day only but do it well.
Met BJ Thomas during cocktails in the hotel on his way to performed at the show. Definitely a class act.
