Save a Clunker: 1988 Lincoln Town Car Limo
By Jen Dunnaway
Editor
Now that Cash For Clunkers is officially signed into law, and a solid billion of our taxpayers’ dollars is earmarked for crushing out our recent automotive heritage, rides of the 1985-and-up vintage are more of an endangered species than ever. I’ve seen weirder cars than this Town Car limo end up junked, so don’t think that its uniqueness will save it. I’m sure the small-town limo service that currently owns the car will figure out how to turn it into a cube of steel and a new-car voucher if it doesn’t meet its reserve price. Check out the auction at eBay.

All i know that the first person i catch trading in a 86-88 Buick Regal or a 85 Buick Lesabre for a voucher i am gonna slap them silly and take the car. Then to be an a-hole i am gonna leave them with a money order for $4.50 that’s made out to a Mr. or Ms. Dumbfack!!!! Stay away from my GM B-Bodies and G-Bodies!!!

actually i read somewhere the law is effective from July 1, 2009 to november 1, 2009 in order to obtain these cash vouchers. The cars will most likely be junked for parts or exported. But wait heres a kicker the motor and transmissions must be shredded(no ifs ands or buts). Personally do these people sit down and think about how many people there going to piss of today or do they just think about the money there trying to get.

One might learn a lot from GTWild Fire, and my Kudo’s to him. I largely agree with him as well. Amusingly, we just had a discussion concerning a sad Mustang sitting waiting for death or redemption, and the effects of CFC…what that might mean for clunkers just sitting.
The idea that cars of our young adult life may be the first to be crushed doesn’t come as a shock….really. The fine rods and customs most of us have on this site (I don’t …I have a Saturn…)
used to be just average ordinary human conveyances supplied to anyone with the asking price right off of the lot. They were destined for no better than what is produced today in terms of how long they would last under normal wear and tear. The average working stiff took only a certain amount of pride in his 63 Chevy before tireing of it and sending it back to a dealer as a trade in,
or to the local junkman before treking back to the said dealer for the newest latest.
Someday, if things work out, My son will look back upon a 2002 Saturn SL 1 sedan with fondness,(perhaps the one I have now…) perhaps searching for one to own and treat as we treat our cars that we have nursed back from the dead.
So my point? Recent auto finds like the 1980 mustang in the other blog, are in danger of being lost because of shortsighted or just dissinterested car owners. The lure of money for a worn down Ford or Chevy in the side yard is hard to pass up…..even if it could be a real head turner at your local Show & Shine…
GT Wild Fire and a host of other are goning to be searching the local auto traders and Craigs list for those veritable finds…diamonds in the rough…potential new age Hot Rods from a Generation pockmarked with Disco and Glam Rock as the soundtrack…..

I just spotted a 1975 skylark coupe, oem 350, with 35k texas miles, with its hubcaps still on…traded in by a dead mans daughter for a prius.
Oh…my….god….and this linclon..it has a double sumped oil pan. the ford engine was freakishly known to hit 1 million miles documented in its little brother versions. People are real stupid. Keep your eyes open kids. DO take a second look and ask questions.

I actually see business opportunity resulting from Cash For Clunkers. Advertise Cash For (good) Interiors.
-
Interiors Cars having complete interiors is probably not a CFC requirement. Advertise buying, including removal of car interiors and instant cash to those who intend to buy a new car using the CFC incentive. Removal would not include the driver’s seat or items required to operate the vehicle. Just food for thought for entrepreneurs…

I really don’t mean to seem adversarial about CFC. I just disagree based on all the information available. Sorry if my position angers anyone at CD, just giving the first amendment a little exercise.

Also, from the sound of what I’ve read I won’t be able to find any cars on Craigslist for under $3,500. I’ll be keeping an eye on Craigslist everyday as I always do. I’m buying and restoring 1986 notchback Fiero – a car that’s pretty susceptible to any contraction in used parts availability. I’ll definitely report if finding what I need becomes an impossibility.

“Cash For Clunkers Becomes Law, Will Never Go Away”
-
NEVER? really? never as in eternity, because that’s what never means.
-
I have to interject with some data that’s basically a freight train with no brakes, it’s called the U.S. National Debt. Many have ignored it or think it’s nonconsequential or in other ways disregard it having any effect on us in the U.S.
-
Well, someday and at the rate we’re heading… someday not long from now there’s going to be a major contraction in spending on government programs. Check out this link:
-
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_public_debt
-
Still think CFC will never end? I’d suggest worrying about what else might end when other countries decide to cut off further transactions that artificially buoy our country’s abilities.
-
On another note, I don’t think this limo looks too bad and it should snag enough to avoid the crusher unless it wasn’t maintained. Someone on the left coast will probably buy it.
