Daddy, Why Do Rhys and Tanner Suck So Bad This Season?

By John Naderi

StreetFire.net

Fortunately, at two years old my boy doesn’t care too much about the 2009 Formula Drift points standings (he’s more of a Monster Jam fan). However if he were old enough to care this would be a hard question for me to answer, much like, “Why is the sky blue?” Or, “How do you drive stick?”. Coming into the fourth event in only a seven round series Rhys Millen is languishing in 12th while Tanner Foust is in an uncharacteristic 18th in the standings. This ain’t to say that these guys can’t drift with three FD championships between them – Tanner being the two-time defending champion. In fact, since FD’s inception in 2004 there is only one other champion – two-time winner Samuel Hubinette – and for the ultimate WTF he is currently without a ride going into the fourth round at Vegas. Both Rhys and Tanner have wheel cred and their suckage comes down to one word – development. It’s why Braun is crushing McLaren and Ferrari in F1 and it’s why Rhys and Tanner can’t find their mojo this year. Hit the jump to see videos of each driver speaking on the challenges surrounding their new rides.

You Never Forget Your First Time!

By John Coyle

Not including stupid, burnout-related accidents, this is one of the dumbest motorcycle crashes I’ve seen. Sure, the rider in the frame might have come in too hot—hey, it’s happened to me—but the guy on the camera bike? What the hell is he thinking? If his buddy is obviously wrecking, why exactly does he follow? Of course, that’s not the only problem here. In following his buddy, the camera guy avoids being hit by a GMC rounding the corner by what looks like inches. It’s not clear who’s “1st Time Down” this is, but let’s hope there were some lessons learned.

Around-the-World Road Trip

By Brian Lohnes

BangShift.com

Imagine the ultimate road trip. Now take your wildest thought and crumple it up and throw it away because you’ve not even begun to touch the trip that Jan and Leone Vorster have been on for the last six years in their modified Land Rover.

Monk, a member of the BangShift.com forums, happened to be visiting a friend who operates an auto parts store when an odd looking motorhome pulled in. As it turned out, Monk was talking to Jan and Leone who have literally been driving around the world for the last few years. According to Monk, the Land Rover has been outfitted with a GM 6.5L diesel engine, solar panels, Unimog axles, and a long list of other modifications. Continue reading at BangShift.com

Mystery Fiberglass Coupe Spotted in Junkyard

By Dan Strohl

Hemmings

So a nearby junkyard has had this coupe body sitting outside its fence for the last few weeks, apparently with no idea what to do with it. I’ve only been glancing it from the road, but on the way to a photo shoot yesterday, I stopped to check it out and grab some pics. Continue reading at Hemmings

Lux Fit

Car Culture At Large

Isn’t it a bit ironic that “luxury-tuned” compact cars are getting to be just as popular as traditional big body luxury sedans? While visiting Japan again, I’ve been reminded at how just how small the roads can be here, not to mention the high taxes you pay to the Japanese government to keep a large displacement vehicle on the road. Keeping that stuff in mind, it’s no surprise at all that cars like this Honda Fit are some of the most popular platforms for luxury tuning. After all, I can’t remember ever hearing that a car had to be large to be luxurious. Continue reading at Speedhunters
