Power Tour Day 4: Homecoming

By Chris Allen

Motorfanatics

Today we set out for Detroit from South Bend. I was looking forward to being somewhere familiar, but I soon remembered why I moved to Cali. Crappy roads, horrible drivers (alright, SoCal’s no better there), and humidity. I do miss all of the American iron, and boy was the meet at Metro Beach chock full of classic iron. Easily the biggest yet, it was nice to have the sun out over acres and acres of cars.

Save A Clunker: '86 Z28 on eBay

By Jen Dunnaway

Editor

Okay, folks: if there are any Reagan-era clunkers on your automotive wish list, now’s the time to snap them up. With the Cash for Clunkers bill having passed in Congress yesterday, 1985-and-newer vehicles are in even greater jeopardy of being crushed than they were during the scrap-metal price spike of couple years ago–and each of these cars, no matter how much of a heap, is automatically going to be worth at least 3500 bucks to the seller if that seller happens to be in the market for a new vehicle. So it’s time to pony up: if you’ve ever been tempted to give someone a few thousand dollars not to crush their car, now’s the time to do it. Over the next few weeks, we’ll be featuring at-risk rides in the blog that are available for sale–you can save them. For the inaugural Save A Clunker post, I picked this gorgeous third-gen Camaro for sale in Philadelphia. Being an ’86, it’s right on the cusp of vehicle demographic affected by the legislation. And, perhaps more ominously, check out the Buy It Now price. Yep, if this ride’s final sale price falls short of the magic number, it might very well be worth the seller’s while to crush it, take the government voucher, and slap a down payment on a new Camaro. So someone, please save it–view the auction here. And while you’re thinking about it, swing by the SEMA site for info on getting in touch with your legislators (the Senate still needs to approve the bill before Cash For Clunkers is signed into law) and to locate elected officials by state who are sympathetic to the car enthusiast community.

CarDomain Obscure Muscle Car Parking Lot: the Lincoln Mark VII LSC

By Jim Brennan

UDMan

Welcome to the CarDomain Obscure Muscle Car Parking Lot, a regular feature which aims to expand the notion of what a muscle car is, and to have some civilized discussion while doing so. After years of square-lined formality, Lincoln’s premium coupe took a dramatic new direction with the 1984 Mark VII. Though it shared a platform with the bustleback Continental, this swoopy semi-fastback was derived from the new-for-’83 Ford Thunderbird/Mercury Cougar. The result was smooth, distinctive, and more visually aerodynamic than any previous Mark. It also marked the return of the fabled “Hot Rod Lincoln” in the form of the LSC. Can this be classified as a muscle car? Reintroducing the Lincoln Mark VII LSC.

Ask Dr. Burro: Automotive Advice Column

By David Belau

Welcome to Ask Dr. Burro, the automotive advice column that answers readers’ questions with wit.

Last time, there was a heated discussion about whether or not I am “The Stig” of Top Gear fame. Some argued that I must be a relative of “The Stig” or some sort of spawn of his. First off, let me just say, Mr. Stig is sure a handsome specimen. The way he stands there so confident in white…the way he never talks…this is a real man’s man.  I’m sure the ladies can’t keep their hands off of him.

1963 Bug: My New Car

By Alex Vickers

Katakuna

My ’87 F-150 went tits up and floated down the river. I found out today that the body is so far gone that it honestly isn’t worth dealing with. Come on, I found a rust hole in the floorboard big enough to stick my hand through it.  So, in order to replace it, I looked for something, anything to drive. I was so desperate I was about to fork over $600 for a slightly better 1988 Olds Delta 88 Royale with a power control module issue (it keeps melting after a month or so), when my father told me that the car that’s been sitting in his driveway for about three years is going to be mine when he finally passes on, which equates to “son, that old car is yours now.”

This car once belonged to my Uncle Charlie until he died in 1981, then was hauled back to Frankfort, Kentucky all the way from Los Angeles. It was originally chocolate brown, but my uncle painted it light blue. Mind you, the man went to great detail, even doing the interior. All that he missed was the passenger-side door jam. It belonged to my grandfather until his death in 1994, in which he left it to my father with the exception that one of his grandchildren is to have it someday. Well fellow CarDomain members, that day has finally come.

Can You Identify This Car?

By Austin Knight

Gotadime

In Round Four, it took you guys a little time, but Dudefromthenorth eventually guessed correctly, saying “Morgan Aero 8.”

The first person to guess the car correctly based on the pic below is a true car nut! Remember, all you need is the make and model—not the year. Here’s photo five:

Motorsports: Mo' Money, Mo' Podiums?

By John Naderi

StreetFire.net

I love motorsports. I also love me some Toyota, owning old school SR5s in both 2W and 4WD configurations, an FX16 Corolla and an MA70 Supra over the years. I’m all about TRD (classic, not contemporary), TTE and Tom’s, AAR in IMSA GTU and GTP, Ivan “Ironman” Stewart owning Baja, WRC Corollas, GT500 Supras, the LMGTP GT-One and as of late the Nurburgring LF-As. So you can imagine my unfettered joy at Toyota’s 2002 F1 plunge followed by years of anguish as they sank to the middle of the charts. This year Toyota is on a rollercoaster of a ride that currently sees the team in third place in the F1 standings following last weekend’s round at Istanbul. However this year is anything but a typical F1 season and next year should be even more different. It seems these challenges facing Formula One are common to all of motorsports.
