Was 1980 a Good Year for Cars?
By Rob Einaudi

I’m digging this thread on the cars of 1980 over at VWVortex. Pictured below is a 1980 Ford Mustang Ghia Coupe. So was 1980 a good year for cars?

A Swedish/Italian Hybrid: the Volvo 262C Bertone Coupé

Traveling from Albany NY, on my way to Burlington VT, I was looking forward to a beautiful late spring day. You see, after a couple of weeks of on again off again rain, the weather finally started to break, with warmer temperatures, and some much needed sunshine. Motoring down Vermont State Route 7, I spotted a truly unique and somewhat rare Swedish beauty, with more than a hint of an Italian accent, a 1978 Volvo 262C by Bertone.
Volvo’s first luxury coupe, the V-6-powered 262C, had an unusual genesis, because it has been reported that the 262C Bertone Coupé was actually influenced by Lincoln’s full-sized mid-1970s personal coupe, the Mark IV. It seems that the Swedes were smitten by the new Lincoln Mark IV, and they wanted to build a car like that. It would have to be done off-line because the production numbers would be low, and the tooling costs would be too much. So there was a partnership formed between Volvo and Carrozzeria Bertone to produce the car. Continue reading at Automotive Traveler

Joey Logano Becomes Youngest Sprint Cup Winner
By Jen Dunnaway

It was great to see little Joey Logano take his first Sprint Cup win at New Hampshire Motor Speedway on Sunday, even if it was on a rain delay. It seems like it was only yesterday that the bashful rookie was totally stepping in the paint–but now, at 19, he’s replaced Kyle Busch as the youngest NASCAR driver ever to score a win at the Sprint Cup level. While the win owed a lot to crew chief Greg Zipadelli’s pit strategy, Joey’s careful coasting on the fumes of his nearly-empty fuel cell, and of course the dumb luck that brought down the rain at the last moment, I betcha it won’t be Joey’s only victory this season. Sunday’s race also featured some vicious fender-to-fender racing between Jeff Gordon and Kurt Busch, among other highlights. Check out more pics after the jump, courtesy of Getty Images.

Great Expectations
Grassroots Motorsports
Ever wonder if history’s most revered models live up to the hype? I have. Some older cars just seem better off when they’re in someone else’s garage. The Jaguar XKE doesn’t fall into that camp, and I recently spent some time with a nicely sorted one.
Wow, it pushes all of the buttons. It’s quick, poised, stylish, comfortable and oh so smooth. The shifter works well even by today’s standards, and that torsion bar front end really soaks up the bumps. And while low-profile tires might be all the rage, back then having a little extra sidewall helped keep NVH in check. Trust me, you want one.

Can You Identify This Car?

In Round Eight, Lilredchev took the win with “Mercedes-Benz G55 AMG”. An honorable mention goes to Varouj, who originally said “Mercedes-Benz G-Class”. Consolation prize goes to Simon, with “Pontiac Trans-Am”.
Now, on to round nine. The first person to guess the car correctly based on the pic below is a true car nut! Remember, all you need is the make and model—not the year. Here’s photo nine:

Splish, Splash, This Car's Taking a Bath!
By John Coyle

In all fairness to the lady driving, the way this giant hole blends into the lake behind it almost makes it look like something you could drive through. That said, I think this whole situation is funny as hell. I don’t know if my favorite part is where the bystander is giving the driver directions—I wonder what he’s saying?—as the car is beginning to sink, or the way she literally has to swim while attempting to return to the vehicle. Fortunately, I don’t have to pick just one. Oh, and for the record, I’d change the name of this file if I could. But since StreetFire won’t even let me have scissors on my desk, that’s out of my control.
Drifting Driver Pisses Off Camera Man
By John Coyle

Initially, it looks like everything is going well here. The guy drifting this BMW choose a great spot, and the way the tires are kicking up the sand makes for a great shot. Unfortunately, after a few revolutions, he gets over-confident and runs up on the guy filming. Oops. Fortunately, while the cameraman had to jump out of the way, he escaped unharmed. You have to love his tirade at the end. Enjoy.
