Maximum Overkill: Jet-Powered Ford F-150!
By John Coyle
Deputy Editor
When I first started working at CarDomain, everybody was going crazy over Ron Patrick’s Jet Beetle, so I knew you guys would totally dig this jet-powered Ford F-150. Builder Chris Lentz has wanted a supersonic truck since he was a little kid, and started on the project two years ago after picking up a ’50s era jet designed to power a Czechoslovakian L-29 Delfin trainer. And while the Blue Oval might not have the lofty performance specs of the fighter, it will run the 1/4 mile in a blistering 8.5 seconds. Sure, at full throttle, the 20-gallon fuel tank will be dry in four minutes, but something tells us it’d be a wicked four minutes! Check out the clip below to see it in action, and head over to Automobile for more pics and details on the build.

I’m sure that took a lot of work, but it looked pretty slow for a car with 2000+ hp. I’m sticking to internal combustion engines, thankyouverymuch.

You can’t expect this thing to be fast off the line. Jet engines need time to spool up. That’s why fighter jets need to be slingshot off aircraft carriers. Without it they would just run to the end of the ship and drop into the ocean. They just don’t have the initial power to get themselves in the air in that short distance. Prop planes used to take off completely under their own power. Jets just can’t. But once they get going jet’s will leave prop planes in their vapor trail. That truck had terrible low end power but once the engines spooled up it got a decent quarter-mile time.

Yikes! Didn’t expect to see so much hate directed at this truck… in all honestly, I’m a Chevy man and I think jet engines are best left to fighter planes, but even still, I think this is really cool.
.
Oh, and the log in issue happened to me as well. I’ll let the tech dudes know.

In the vid the truck looks like it was on a public highway (opposing traffic in the background), so a full-on blast wasn’t likely a decent idea at the time. The truck also sits a bit high for decent high-speed runs, IMHO. Like a lot of cars on here, built for fun. More power to him for taking a gamble on the unusual.

That thing’s gotta be unstable since he raised the truck’s already high center of gravity and, well, its a pick-up. I would hate to drive that sucker at triple digits but I’m not gonna lie it’s an awesome and unique mod for that truck.
