The Sniper Lives: Twin Turbo, Viper V10 Powered Mustang Caught on Tape!

By Brian Lohnes

BangShift.com

Call it project Sniper, project Nitemare, or just bat poop crazy, but Scott Vanderschoor’s twin-turbo, Viper V10 powered Mustang project has officially transitioned from garage-bound dream to functioning automobile status and we have the video to prove it.

The link was sent to us by Scott Clark (DieselGeek on the forums) who spends some of his spare time doing what he’s doing in this video, tuning and dialing in fuel injection setups on cars that range from fairly tame to, well, this.

Vanderschoor, it needs to be mentioned is a home builder, and he performed the work on every aspect of this amazing project. He’s been providing photo updates throughout the build on the BangShift.com forums.

This is a quickie video that shows the car’s first fire up and Clark establishing a baseline to have the car idle and behave itself well enough to get it onto the dyno rollers and really put the wood to that big V10.

We’re excited to see this monster get all the hiccups out of its system and start making numbers on the chassis dyno. This project has been a long term affair for Vanderschoor and the amount of work that it has entailed, like moving the firewall back nearly half a foot, is really amazing and speaks to his dedication to this car.

Consider this an appetizer. We’re going to take you through the very fun final steps of this project in a couple of video installments. Thanks to “the Scotts” for getting the video!

ok so the belt slipping was anoying. but no smoke or fluids leaking seams like a good start up to me. with all of the work done on this car the belt noise is nothing. I am not a mopar guy and would never put one in my ford but you cant knock the craftsmanship that it took to build this thing. hope to see an ET.

Some of you are just retards. If you can do the same exact thing but better…then you can talk. Building any car that can run is a major accomplishment. All that needs to be said is great job and i hope you get all the kinks out. None of this negative shit. And yes there was that one Boss 351 but did it have a twin turbo? This build was fuckin awsome. I dont even like the new school mopars or fords.

What’s up guys…this is my build.

To answer a few questions, yes the belt issue has been resolved. What you are seeing is literally the first time we started the car. With a build this complex you are going to have things that don’t go 100% perfect…and if the most major issue is that the belt squeaks then I am happy. Trying to find the exact right length belt for a 98 Viper motor with a 95 Mustang idler pulley while bypassing the AC compressor is a little hit or miss.

The stock 94 Cobra bumper and hood fit on the car without modification.I know that intercooler looks enormous but it gets concealed nicely.

For those that like it that;’awesome. For those that don’t that’s irrelevant. I have done just about everything you can do with Mustangs from juiced 306’s, to turbo 331’s to Procharged 408’s….this build isn’t about making the most power. It’s about doing something that has never been done. And it accomplishes that goal.

screw it, just put a 2JZ in there, and make some crazy numbers like 1400 to the ground

nico4dsc
Jul 2, 2009 at 8:31 pm

FAIL. WTF, you would think they could make more power with a V8. I love me a Viper, but I love the sound of twin turbo V8 with a mean cam

MOPAR OR NO CAR!!! Wait…What the!

This isn’t the first time a V10 found it’s way into a Mustang. A few years back, Ford engineers took a white 1999 Stang and shoved a Triton V10 in it with some modding to the engine. They named it the Boss 351. It was the only one built. I think Mustang Monthly did the write up on it. I do give this one props though. It’s the first one done by a hotrodder and not an engineer and the choice of drivetrain is awesome even though it’s not Ford-based.

Jul 2, 2009 at 10:16 am

Cool but sounds like he needs some gator back belts. Talk about slippage! Plus I can only imagine the extensive bodywork mods that will be need to be done to hide that intercooler.

Love the way it sounds though!!!
One Mean Machine. Sniper, I love it!
