Breaking: Pontiac G8 to Live on as a Caprice, Built in Oshawa

By Jim Brennan

Citing an informed and confidential source within GM’s executive ranks, Automotive Traveler has confirmed that not only will Pontiac’s highly regarded G8 sedan migrate to the Chevrolet brand, but it will be built in North America at GM’s Oshawa, Ontario plant.

Late this morning, Automotive Traveler learned through confidential sources at GM that the G8 (based on GM’s Global Zeta platform, a lighter, more efficient version on the chassis that currently underpins the G8) will be built in Oshawa, Ontario, right alongside it’s stable mate, the Chevy Camaro. We have learned that the new car will most likely be called the Caprice, and that it will be launched within 18 months, most likely at the start of the 2011 model year after Pontiac gets its last rites. sounds like this could be good for GM think of how much law enforcement missed the rear drive Caprice when it dissappeared. What would this mean for the Impala as the two would be competing for buyers.

As long as it has the six-speed manual option like the GXP, it can look like whatever.

Fritz Henderson, the CEO at GM (lite), stated in an interview over at Autoblog that there is no truth to the rumors that the Caprice will be built alongside the Camaro at Oshawa, Ontario, after this report came out. Automotive Traveler stands behind this story, and it has been confirmed by two different sources deep within GM, who wish to keep their identity confidential.

Oh, and I wonder if this could bring the Sport Truck back into play? If so would it be the El Camino, or maybe a Caballero then? (Crosses fingers!)

They should use Buick instead, they could bring back the Skylark and GS. Buick’s logo would fit exactly where Holden’s are, being that they’re both a circle and all.

Well if it looks like a Caprice and not a G8, there would be no justice. GM deserves to lose Pontiac enthusiasts to Mazda, cause Chevys utterly lack Pontiac’s style.
