Cash for Clunkers Not Just Blog Fodder: It's Really Happening
By David Clarke
highspeedhijinks
So the automotive community is abuzz over Cash For Clunkers. Working at a new car dealer in upstate New York I figured I’d see maybe two or three cars qualify for the program. Well, I was clearly wrong. The public is well informed about the program and cars are piling up out back, ready for the crusher. Some of the cars are pretty surprising, like the Jaguar, Land Rover and a Camper Vanagon. It’s sad to say, but this looks like it’s going to be far worse than I anticipated. More pics after the jump.

i agree on the jaguar bit. they do look nice but they are a bitch to keep up with on repairs. my boss has one and he has in in the shop monthly even when he doesnt drive it daily. the jag should go lol. as for the other vehicles they should be saved. except the VW. unless some volkswagen fan buys it. the trucks looked decent except for the one ton and even that would be of use in a small town like mine. the land rover looks great i cant believe its on the go.

1984 or newer and average (EPA estimate, not actual numbers) of 18mpg or less.
But you must trade it in for a new car that gets 22mpg or better for $3500 and 24mpg or higher for $4500.

Alright, I agree, its a shame that the Jag was given over to this scam, but as someone mentioned earlier. Most of the cars that are worth saving are in the hands of enthusiast already. I also haven’t seen anyone actually talking about the plan. I read today in the paper, that the vehicle has to be from 1984, or before, it also much average less than 18mpg, as for your Caravan bulldog_1995, if the deal is as I read it, they wouldn’t give you squat for the van because it does to well on gas. The article also said that only 2500 vouchers will be given out, which they expect to run out of by September. I agree the plan isn’t my favorite, but hopefully the damage to real collector cars will be minimal, last time I checkd there weren’t to many clueless old ladies still toolin’ around in Hemi GTXs, or Shelby Mustangs.

Old Jaguars often clean up nice but cost a fortune if used regularly. Might even cost a fortune if not used regularly. There comes a point where the balance of upkeep exceeds the asthetic value.

Jags never had a problem looking good. Too bad their other problems weren’t resolved.

I am with you, StickShiftRick. Nobody is forcing the junk out of people’s hands, its just an option for someone that would rather spend 400 a month on a car payment instead of gas and repairs. Also, I doubt the response to this will be so big that it will rob the salvage parts market clean. I love cars and especially old cars and I am not afraid of this bill. In fact, I have a few friends that could really profit from a 3500 trade in on something a dealer might give them 100 for otherwise. Everyone just needs to calm down.

i would take any of those cars anyday…they should try and resell them and make more money from them instead of crushing them…if they dont sell then crush them and recycle the metal and plastic instead of letting them sit after they’re crushed

Notice!!! Not one camaro mustang no 21 window bus no xke just junk. A coworker of mine has a similar jag and the piece of crap is costing him a fortune to keep running. his may be off to the crusher soon. the chevy truck is a rust bucket if it was in better shape it could easly sell for more. the rover? British. Translation leave your left nut when you order the part and they will take the other on pickup. Go to your local salvage yard and you can find nicer cars. If we dont get rid of something a lot more people will be losing their jobs.

Unless your caravan goes from 0 to 65 instantly it is still not going to average above 22mpg around town. Plus, if you get good enough gas mileage then there is no need to get a new car anyway right? Of course at 200k+ miles you are bound to need a major part soon(knock on wood). To be honest I am not a fan of free(tax)money, but in this case you will have to spend 6+ times more money to get that stimulus.

gtwildfire- i am second owner on the caraven when i bought it last aug it came with all the repair recipts and all i’ve had to do to it was replace the brake pads and put a used trany in after about 6 mths (big surprize lol) but you missed my point they wanted to give me a rig that gets WORSE mpg how does that help the inviro?

Oh but wait, bulldog_1995. Giving that Caravan with 275,000 milees on the odometer and getting 2500 bucks is just PURE EVIL. You must RESIST the TEMPTATION and continue to dump your income into that van that has served you so well, for so long.
-
It’s unfathomable that you would take the easy route, disregard such an old friend and help boost new car sales. You must reconsider this ridiculous path and help preserve what few used Caravans are left on this Earth.

i am 2018167 and i dont know why it showed up like that. But anyway maybe I do make some invalid, angry remarks. But at the moment i’m generally pissed off at the government and my dad losing his job didn’t help. And no, not everyone has to go with trading in their clunker. I know my grandparents didn’t when they bought their f150. They didn’t want to see their beautiful Dodge Ram crushed. They love it. Multi-Millionaires by the way so no they didnt need the discount. My whole family is strongly opposed to the Obama Administration and i am opposed as well. And of course it will stimulate the new car market and help in some other occasions as well. And it is in place and I may not like it but all I can do is watch it unfold and I certainty hope it succeeds in achieving something good, just because i dont like something doesn’t mean i want it to fail, which is the same way that I feel about the Obama administration.

2018167:
Not everyone with a car that qualifies for the bill will actually use it because you HAVE to purchase a new car to get the money. So there will be plenty of cheapies for us all.
OldRidinLow:
This is a good point, but only if you are lucky enough to actually live next to a pick and pull. All my local scrapyards charge an arm and a leg for OEM stuff off a car. Then you might as well buy a NOS part from a catalog.
If I worked at a dealership I would be super crazy about this bill because it is a definite sale everytime someone comes in with a clunker.

Jul 20, 2009 at 9:09 pm
2018167, if that IS your real name, you make me lulz. First off, I like to reiterate that no one is forcing these people to take this offer — it’s completely up to the consumer. Secondly, as far as where the money is coming from, let’s go wit tax (although it’s probably just as likely coming from foreign investors which by the way hold 50% of our debt but I’ll save that for a more apt forum). The tax code in the US is bracketed, meaning the more you make, the more percentage they take from you; so there’s like an exponential gain for the gov’t the richer someone is. So seeing that most of the money is coming from them AND that it’s safe to assume that they aren’t the one trading in clunkers, do you really believe that this bill wouldn’t in some way actually help the “lower class” as you put it? I have a few buddies with a garage, err, I should say yard, full of nasty skank-o-mobiles that I wouldn’t take if you paid me and NOW they can have +$3500 for these things! With regards to your recession talk, that’s another reason why this bill is in place. It’s here to stimulate the car market as the USED car market doesn’t really mean crap for industry when juxtaposed to the new car market. Now I’m not trying to make a “pro” claim for the bill per se, I am however trying to stimulate intellectual debate and veer away from ignorant, asinine banter. My personal view is to spend LESS and just ride out the storm, even if it is harsher because China and other nations won’t feed Uncle Sam’s appetite to live above it’s means forever, especially as the USD starts to wain with the rise of the Euro and additional currencies used for the international reserve.

Jul 20, 2009 at 8:52 pm
This is the stupidest idea ever. Wat in the hell are the lower class going to do for cars?? Thats my question. Some people can not afford newer cars with better gas millage. Some people need cars and the only ones they can afford are the old clunkers with bad gas millage. And what happens if you need some replacement parts. Where the hell are you gonna find those? Not to mention this plan saves nothing, absolutely nothing. I have talked with car dealers and they will just sit there and grin when you ask if they will still let people bargain as much as they used to be able to.Because they know that they wont let you go as low. I don’t see how crushing good cars is supposed to help us. Its just plain wasteful, just because something isn’t the best doesn’t mean you should destroy it. Who cares if it helps the environment, im more worried about the economy. Where is the money coming from??? TAXPAYERS PERHAPS, mo matter where it comes from the government shouldn’t be pissing away their money on this shit. We are in a recession and i feel that maybe we should focus on that problem first. At the moment i say f*** the planet.

FordRulesAll, that’s one reason why they do want us to scrap these things; they aren’t exactly eco-friendly. Plus, the idea is anyway (I’m not saying it works), that you have to buy a more eco-friendly car in order to qualify for this deal. In South Jersey, we have our fair share of clunkers moppin’ around. Whatever decreases the chances of me being stuck behind some stinky, slow iron sled or a pickup that’s shooting out enough unburned fuel for my car to run off of, the better. Most–not all–of the cars being scrapped is better served as raw material than the crap car they are anyhow.

It is very funny how our Gov’t is urging us to recycle and reuse, not make garbage, help save the environment and all. But yet they want people to just throw away good vehicles. Makes no sense.

OldsRidinLow01
Jul 20, 2009 at 7:07 pm
This is a PERFECT way to totally screw people out of perfectly good replacement parts. That Jaguar looks immaculate.. There’s a wealth of parts to be had there. Somewhere, some poor guy is looking for a door handle or a trim piece, and that car is just gonna get crushed.
Even if the cars are in overall poor shape, it’s doing the community a disservice by destroying them in whole.
I say.. pull the engines and dispose of them, keep the car for parts.. at least if it’s a worthwhile car (those 2 trucks in the photos would hardly be worth it).

I agree. The cars worth having will stay around. The ones we’ll lose are the junk 80s land yacht cars, fullsize vans and tired old rusted out SUVs. There won’t be any 57 Chevys, 32 Fords or 69 Chargers. All the loved classics will still be around. Will we lose some El Caminos off the road? Probably. I won’t shed a tear for those. I promise.

even though i dont like jaguars, its a shame that this one had to be put in that parking lot. even if it had a blown engine or electrical problems, why not give it to someone that can actually do something with it. probably some rich kid who needed some extra money so he can bribe his parents into buying a new porsche or somthing.

After the price of the toyota I had writen that the guy could put $1700 towards a new tacoma (22mpg 2wd 5speed) and that the vanagon persons was worth $5000 but most likely was sitting around or burning oil.
Monk73
Jul 20, 2009 at 11:26 am
Well lets see, the jag probably has electrical issue or some part is going to be too expensive. Estimated PPV: $3675 => $3500 garunteed to get its worth.
Landrover, gets most likely 12mpg Estimated PPV: $2000 < $3500, $1500 to put towards a new car with better gas mileage.
Toyota truck with clearly visible rust holes most notably the metal holding the turnsignal in plus a grand total of assuming around 14 or 15mpg. Estimated PPV: $1725 $3500. Poor decision on the owners part, but chances are, it was sitting around or like I said burning oil like a champ.
A definite $3500 for your car that is just sitting around is an amazing deal and that is why people are doing it. Plus I hear atleast 5 dealership advertisements about the deal daily.
